not exactly. u can use any derailleur that have the same cable pull ratio as the shifter. for example, the tiagra 4600 and 4700 is not compatible to each other due to this issue even though both are 10 speeds system and both share the same lineage. the 4700 are compatible with the 11 speed system though, but limited to 10 speed. im guessing this altus derailleur share the same cable pull ratio with the 4600/5700/6700, hence it works.

What shifter do you use? It's interesting that altus can be used for 10 speed cassette

your max cog 34t or 36t?
largest cog is 25t. also test out with a 28t and it works out just fine too.
