    There was a gas crisis a few decades ago when the predecessor to OPEC was staging an economic war with the US. The US solved the crisis by drilling for oil and prices dropped like a stone. I wonder why we can't do that again?

    • @ShootYourBlocks
      @ShootYourBlocks 2 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      We don't even have to drill for it. Biden could just re-open the pipeline from Alaska

    • @lukajolich7669
      @lukajolich7669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      That's not how this works. Gas prices have fallen due to producers severely cutting back on production during the pandemic when demand evaporated. This included shutting down wells, firing important/experienced personnel, and permit holders opting to wait to drill till prices rose so they could get more investment. Demand has now reached, or even in some ways exceeded pre-pandemic levels, whereas supply has increased, but not to the same degree as it is far easier for demand to increase than it is to increase supply, especially when companies have an interest in keeping them high and holding permits for more investment. In this situation, you have to find a way to force those companies to increase supply and reduce price-gouging (some like to act like this part is made up, but it's a common part of most gas crises and this one is no different). This is not something that is easy for a president to solve, especially when he faces a Congress unable to act, such as how Republicans have blocked any anti-gouging measures, and a Supreme Court that has inhibited the ability of the executive branch and its agencies from interfering with the market. He has already released our reserves alongside several other countries (it must also be understood that this is a global crisis, which also hampers his ability to affect it) and is making moves to cut gas taxes for consumers, which are aiding prices in the short-term but still rely on the supply increasing in the long-term. I know someone will also probably mention something like the Keystone pipeline so I figured I should also add that only Phase 4 was canceled through Biden rescinding a permit given by Trump and one that ignored the questions of legality regarding the ownership of the lands of pipeline would have traveled upon, which was owned by native tribes. This means that much of the cancelation of the pipeline is based on that issue of legality. Thus, such a topic of allowing the construction of that section must also be based in that context as it was not a simple matter of allowing the importation of more oil or not.

    • @1810jeff
      @1810jeff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      @@lukajolich7669 Ok so what about the leases that the current president cancelled for drilling operations in Alaska and the gulf of Mexico. Also do you know why companies didn't expand their operations before the pandemic, it's because it takes years to expand and as you saw with keystone the whole thing can fall through over red tape. Clearly the solution here is less regulation and not more. These companies would have expanded production to take advantage of the high prices like every industry does whenever demand outpaces supply so clearly there's another cause.

    • @lukajolich7669
      @lukajolich7669 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@1810jeff First, it seems you are entirely ignoring the context of the cancelation of those leases. For the ones in Alaska, they were canceled due to a "lack of industry interest in leasing in the area" which is not unexpected given the lack of interest on a national level and how those particular leases faced similar issues several years ago. As for the Gulf of Mexico leases, those were also canceled amid ongoing court issues regarding them that had stopped work on them and curtailed their development. In neither case were well-developed drilling sites shut down and it is unlikely them not being canceled would have done anything, especially for the Alaska ones that have been sitting there for decades with continuous issues in garnering interest. Second, you act like companies have a reason to expand production to meet demand but they really, really don't. With the end of the Pandemic, demand has returned to its normal levels and remains somewhat inelastic due to the sheer amount of car-dependency in the U.S. It is in the companies' best interests to exploit this and only increase production enough as to keep the economy outright collapsing while making as much profit as possible. Moreover, the fossil fuel industry is already one of, if not the most subsidized industries in the U.S. and the regulations you speak of are ones that were put in place when our rivers literally used to catch on fire from the dumping of materials by various companies and also the various oil spills by these companies. In addition, you are relying on the free market to fix the problem when it does not really exist: you have few, if any, small oil companies and you are mostly left with the monolithic ones we have today that stifle competition. Heck, they are powerful enough they often fund think tanks pushing the very ideas you are pushing so they can make more profit and even helped cause our massive car-dependency by financing it and bribing the government to make it policy (I will use this quick occasion to note I do not inversely believe the government should be a monolithic entity instead and I am for the removal of unnecessary and harmful regulations, but think doing so simply because of a belief in the free market is not enough).
      Edit: thought I would also mention your tangent on them not expanding before the pandemic is rather odd given they did before it, but cut down during it when demand drastically fell. If you want, you can find graphs of U.S. oil production and demand before/during the pandemic and you will see that it lines up with this. You could also see for after the pandemic and how our production has grown and almost met (my data might be a little outdated so it may have now met) our pre-pandemic highes so the issue is also not that Biden stopped production from resuming/growing.
      Edit 2: Accidentally put "against" instead of "for" in terms of the removal of unnecessary and harmful regulations.

    • @1810jeff
      @1810jeff 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      @@lukajolich7669 I don't see how lowering supply makes them more money considering they only have so much to sell, you'd make more money if you increased the rate of production until prices balanced out again than you would if you artificially maintained supply low because you'll inevitable run out of product which will stall sales. US oil isn't like opec where it's nationalized and monopolized, in the US there's tons of oil companies (about a 150 notable ones and who knows how many small ones) which means companies would take advantage of the high prices and drill more before the price drops. If oil isn't monopolized the chance of a price manipulation scheme is unlikely because these companies directly compete with one another. You don't see this kind of production pattern in industries that consist of over 100 companies which means it's not the companies themselves it's all the red tape and environmentalist policy.

      Because that's literally part of the joke. His name is literally P. Brickman.

    It's not all big oil, it's the fact that fracking and drilling is now regulated and shut down to the point where we can't reasonably produce as much as we used to, this includes electricity as well, you really don't save much on a tesla unless you drive it for multiple decades or something.
