  • Well, well, well. This one has been a long time coming. And only a few months after the Dark Souls video, too. Throw that, the Halo Reach video and the Adapting Tolkien video all together, and it's been a busy time trying to create video essays for all of you. I hope you enjoy it. It's been a trip trying to make it. I'll see you all again in the next one.

The worst part of Young Blood for me is how there's seemingly no radical progress has been made in the anti-nazi resistance effort after the whole timeskip. In a way it reminds me of Star Wars sequels. The IP just can't move on from the initial premise. Machine games should've given a respectable ending to the story of Blazkowicz' struggle against nazi Germany. His daughters could've been later tasked with dealing with the new threat in some way to remind players that fascism is never totally defeated and can take many shapes.

EXACTLY! Imagine a different version of this game where the Nazis were on their last legs. They have hold outs, but all of their grand fortresses have been trampled.
imagine if they have been pushed to the most un-hospitable places on the planet?
They have to scrounge around the nuclear wasteland they created or to the furthest points in the polls or ocean or even space.

In your talking points about J's death, I'm surprised you didn't draw a parallel to Hendrix's real life performance of the Star Spangled Banner, which served as a haunting and harrowing critique on American Exceptionalism and warfare with only his guitar. He made sounds that no six string ever should, and it's terrifying.

Hendrix famously played the Star Spangled Banner in concert- that might also be why they chose it; a copyright free way to reference his music. And I've always personally understood Hendrix's rendition to represent a reclamation of American patriotism for the revolutionaries of his day, the warriors of the Civil Rights Movement who understood the promise of America to be possible and were trying to make it so. Much like Ben Shapiro whining that Lizzo played the flute (and explicitly stated that he found her to be, I'm paraphrasing, "sullying a classy instrument"), conservatives were insulted by Hendrix playing the national anthem on electric guitar.

As someone who has struggled with their faith since childhood, Set's speech in the concentration camp has stuck with me.
Set is both a believer and a sceptic - a man devout in his own way, but one who is also facing a spiritual crisis.
_"Faith. Faith kept her [the dead prisoner] going. I... I cannot believe with such certainty."_
However, this struggle also helps keep his faith from slipping into blind dogma.
_"For me, in everything, there must be doubt. Otherwise, there's no room to question, to learn."_
Set showed me that struggling with your beliefs is not only normal but also a necessary part of one's spiritual journey, regardless of whether or not you are religious

I learned a technique similar to four square breathing in anger management when I was 12 or so: in for four, hold for four, out for eight. You can combine this with clenching your fists on the inhale and slowly releasing the tension on the exhale for when you're getting upset. Or, you can turn it into an incredible relaxation exercise by starting by clenching your toes, then adding more muscles (toes & feet; toes, feet, & ankles; toes, feet, ankles, calves; etc.).

Wolfenstein 2 hit at the perfect time in history and my life - when I felt like the world was going crazy but no one physically around me reflected it the game felt like it was made for me? Getting older and playing games made by people who grew up in your own generation really is wild - I cried an uncountable number of times from weird emotional resonance of laughing then violent catharsis then morbid or deep empathy for real history the game reflects, repeat.

    • @CH4R10T_TV
      @CH4R10T_TV  23 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

This was my experience. I actually got into Wolfenstein because of The New Colossus. I think the thing that really made it a core part of my feelings about the series are how it relates so much of the themes of the games and BJ's experiences in the alternate history timeline back to his childhood the "real" timeline, which is also the writers' way of deeply tying the meaning of the games and their subject matter (oriented around Nazism) to the "real" meaning an audience would really be familiar with (oriented around the mythologized and real pasts of nations that opposed the Nazis, especially First World countries that dominate modern culture). I think that perspective feeling the most "real" to me is part of why I wrote the video this way.

Good analysis; New order engraved itself in my memory back when I first played; basically the only world war II game that actually went *there*, and I’ve yet to see someone else even reach it. (At least close to spec ops the line)
Like the shock series; it feels like a really solid interrogation of a political philosophy and the emotional cost of resistance.
I do still feel the series lost its way after old blood though; new colossus really lacks a solid thematic and villain through-line by its second half. B.J’s story sorta ends at N.O; and I feel the developers should’ve just jumped to Young Blood, and Y.B did not have to feel so corporate in its design.

As someone who is bothered in a number of ways, it felt good getting to indulge that immediate, over the top and violent hero fantasy of fighting fascism directly, even as we slowly push against it day by day in real life. I do find it deeply amusing that the pre release of Wolf 2 created such a potent meta narrative in how the extreme right railed against the game and its politics, completely missing the entire point being made

This was a great analysis, probably the best look back of the Wolfenstein reboot series on this platform and how it works as a criticism of fascist ideology. It's especially nice to hear someone discuss the second game without criticizing it for its shortcomings compared to the first as though it was an utter travesty of a game (which a certain other retrospective on this series that came out recently proclaims), and as a fan of Noah Caldwell-Gervais' videos (he's probably the best game critic on TH-cam), I appreciate the shoutout to his analysis of Youngblood.
Also, there's a couple of other videos I'd recommend for anyone more curious about the Wolfenstein reboot, all from my second-favorite video essayist, Jacob Geller. First would be Geller's video about "Whiteness and Judaism in Wolfenstein," which covered much of what you did about America being more similar to Nazi Germany than we care to remember, as well as discussing the significance of BJ's newfound Jewishness as revealed in the second game. Then, for further learning about the Golem, I'd recommend Geller's video "The Golem and the Jewish Superhero," which essentially discusses the original folktale of the Golem of Prague, the history of the Golem in media, its influence on Superman, and its overall significance to Judaism. Finally, I'd recommend Geller's video "Head Transplants and the Non-Existence of the Soul," which is basically an existential discussion on possibility of indefinitely preserving the "self", with sections about BJ's head transplant in New Colossus and his discussion with Tekla in the Fergus timeline in New Order.

A random thought that i had pop up during the back half of the Youngblood segment, I wonder if Machine Games is gonna sneak a little wolfenstein ref into their Indiana Jones game. Like a piece from the Da'at Yichud is in Marshal College or is a collectible during the game. The timing wouldn't necessarily be right(Great Circle takes place in 1937, Wolfenstein The New Series starts in 46 at the earliest) but I think it'd be fun. maybe even finding it unlocks a teaser for Wolf3.
Also this is the first video of yours that I've seen, but I found it all quite insightful. I look forward to digging through the backlog, it'll make for a great listen at work. I love New Order, Old Blood, and New Colossus as games and as stories. I didn't know much about Youngblood before watching, and I gotta say learning Grace is now the leader of FBI is kinda gross. Hell learning that there is still an FBI is kinda gross. I guess I could see reusing the name, but I feel like a Post-Nazi America really should be like a from the ground up rebuild. Though maybe with the introduction of a timeline/multiverse mechanic, Wolf3 could set out the Youngblood was just one possible timeline, maybe with the plot being about disabling the deadman's switch in the "Prime" Wolf Timeline.

Great video over all, I have two points of critique though:
First your language, although certainly highly precise, is a bit dense and complicated. For us not used to that vocabulary, or non-native speakers (I went through the first part twice and still am not sure if I correctly understand it) it would be great to have it in simpler terms. An example is Philosophy Tube, even if Abby is using complicated language she makes me at least feel that I understand the intent of her words.
My second critique is regarding your response to why it is a bad idea to punch fascists. I understand the urge and satisfaction to punch nazis, and in the virtual I enjoy it. But I agree with (I think it was Kennedy?) that simply punching a modern Nazi Rattenfänger will not help the antifascist cause but rather strengthen the base they are trying to build.
In that case I would have hoped for your opinion on what is an effective way to deal with those modern Nazis. If you gave that I might have not taken it as your opinion or your take at a solution to that problem.
In conclusion, even if it may not be stylish, it would work well if you structred the video a bit like this with chapter titles in the video:
    Intro
    Summary plot Game 1
Analysis of plot (including outside sources maybe here)
    (Repeat for number of games)
Your opinion, further reading, discussion of further points, etc.
Because they way you structured this video makes it necessary for me to go through the whole 2 hours if I want to look for a specific point you discussed.
The structure you used would work well if the video was only ~30 minutes long.
But over all a great video, I hope you take my criticism in the constructive way it was intended.

Honestly, imho, the Fergus time line makes for a better canon, it feels A LOT better Grace giving the speech at the end over Wyatt as, well, she's an oppressed minority rising up agaisnt a system of white supremacy, Wyatt giving the speech just feels like American exceptionalism, one type of oppressive fascism for another.

@@Abcdefg-tf7cu I'd like to hear how you don't feel American exceptionalism doesn't run parrallel to fascism, seeing as it's that very attitude that currently has the country aiding and abetting genocide, antagonizing other nations by circling them with bases "for their own defense" and has been leading the way in exploiting the global south. The Third Reich would almost be proud of the USA, if it wasn't for the very minor civil rights it gives to minorities.

@mikeyfisher4256 I wouldn't bother arguing with that person. When you asked them that question they immediately had a meltdown and a bunch of their comments calling you a pedo or cussing you out or insinuating you're a bad person (something about Israel and Gaza? I couldn't tell if they were calling you anti-Arab or anti-Jewish) got caught by the filter. They clearly didn't watch or didn't engage with the section where I cited Wilkerson's book, or the section about Marx and Nietzsche, or the section where I responded to Kennedy. They were just leaving inflammatory replies and I guess couldn't handle the heat in their own kitchen.
