I'm getting a hognose at an expo on october 26th! I already have the tank set up, and I'm really excited. There isn't too much hognose snake informational videos on youtube that I haven't watched, so I was so glad to come across this!
I have a male western, hes small but smart. Taught him to eat from the top of his hide. Hes a big suck and he likes being handled. He will come to my hand and stay still while i pick him up. They are smart and they can surprise you.
i have two girls and i adore them i have a toffee hognose girl called buscuit shes a excellent feeder and very confident and a exanthic girl called oreo shes still a baby and very spicy she gave me a scare not wanting to eat completly the oppersit thanks to my friends at tge shop they taught me all snakes are different and she would go to defensive mode insted of eating mode and since i got to know her more shes been amazing she wont feed of the tweezer yet but in time i hope xx they amaze me that they know who i am and buscuit is always waiting on feeding day sat on the left side looking through the glass x
It is amazing how different each one can be. I had pretty large opinions of reptiles before I started keeping them, but I still feel in awe about how much personality they have and how different two members of the same species can be. :-D When Martha stopped eating it was pretty stressful and I tried all sorts of things. I'm very glad that she's eating well now, but she currently seems hungry all the time. :-D
This video primarily has adult females as the stars. Those girls are average for adult females, but with western hognoses there is a big size difference between boys and girls. George does get a moment in the sun in this video. He is my albino anaconda male and he is considered an adult now and he's a bit on the small side, but fairly average for a male. Adult females are going to be in the range of 250 grams to 500 grams being fairly common and being in the middle of that being "average". My arctic adult females are 380 grams right now. Every now and again you will hear of a giant female that pushes into the 600 to supposedly 800 gram mark. Adult males are going to be more like 70 to 120 grams with a huge male pushing into that 200 gram mark. It does happen, but isn't common. Now these numbers are very much for the western or plains hognose (same snake two different common names), Heterodon nasicus. Other numbers are going to hold true for other species. For example, the tricolor hognoses don't have as big of a difference between males and females.
I believe that tricolors eat really well and most will readily take mice. My experience has definitely been so. Some do feed a varied diet and I do believe it is probably better for them, but I am also afraid to offer them choices and then make it so that they aren't easy feeders. Some do believe that feeding them an all mice diet shortens their lifespan, but without further research I believe it is hard to know for sure and they already have a shorter lifespan than most snakes.

Congratulations on your upcoming baby! The hognoses are really awesome! It will take a bit, but I have lots more hognose content to share. :-D
Thanks for this video! I really miss my hoggy! She was a Mexican hog nose and such a little hissy fit! Loved her
I'm so sorry for your loss! I am glad you enjoyed the video though.
@@danellescritters thankfully she is still alive. I had her a few years, then the breeder begged me to sell her back, so I did :)
This information is very helpful, I’m thinking of becoming a hognose snake owner.
I'm glad it was helpful. :-D They can be really cool snakes.

That's awesome! Snakes are definitely smarter than a lot of people give them credit for. The hognoses are a lot of fun. :-D
