  • 3 types of locks that you MUST have while traveling, especially if you are a backpacker. I tell you what they are and how to use each type to properly secure your stuff. These locks will allow you to secure your stuff in any hostel or hotel without having to worry about someone breaking into your bags or stealing them.
    If you have any questions or comments, leave them below :)

    i got really spoiled while living in japan, at one point i was in a guesthouse and locked NOTHING but planning for a 16 country trip this video has really opened my eyes. Not paranoid, just more aware. Great vids!

      C Ferguson Glad to help! Better safe than sorry. My main slogan is simply "make sure your stuff is harder to steal than the stuff next to yours." It has worked so far :)

    If you dont have a luggage lock a piece of wire, or even a paperclip will do the trick as well. All you need to do is make it hard for a thief to open a zipper on the go.
    For me backpacking started my interesting in Lock Picking really, because I wanted to know how easy padlocks are to open. What I learned from that is that there is literally no correlation between the quality of a lock and its price. I have opened 30 Dollar ABUS Locks with a paperclip. And i have had a hard time to open 2 Dollar China Locks with a full set of picks. Just keep in Mind that locks are a psychological barrier, not a physical one. I could pick almost any regular lock withing 2 minutes. Breaking it would take less than 5 Seconds.
    As you said, all you need to do is make your stuff look like more work to a thief than all the other stuff laying around.

    All good advice MadMan. My only comment would be to invest in a bigger lock for your locker. The lock you show can be broken easily with two wrenches. Search TH-cam for "breaking lock with two wrenches". Guests at our hostel ask why we don't loan out locks and keys. It's because we want the lock's key to have always been in the possession of it's owner. Keys can be copied. For this reason, travelers should bring their own lock.

    i like your reasoning. i know people can defeat the lock. the point is to make it harder or for them to take longer to steal. every lock can be defeated with patience and time. good idea on the lock for ur bag. im going to start doing that

    this is the exact reason why I clicked on this video, I was thinking about running a cable thru the zipper and around the bed feet/slats

    Use a set of handcuffs, nobody will risk robbing a possible cop (except a real cop).

    so fwi, always keep your valued belongings with you because anybody can open your bags, it's not about the size of the lock, it's about how strong the zipper is

    Thank you. Another tip: Keep the combination and/or keys to your locks in your money belt. Bring more than one money belt so that you can wash/dry one and wear the other one.

    Hey thanks for this video. I'm traveling soon to Europe as well, can you provide a link to each one of these locks? Thanks if you can. : )

    Thanks. You think that keeping a rain cover on your backpack whilst walking through the city would be decent security?

    Yes I have a big question! Traveling from London, Paris, Amsterdam to Copenhagen all on different trains. Am worried about storing my suitcase out of my sight. Some people suggested a chain or cable lock while others thought it unnecessary. Any recommendations?

    sorry. how thick does the metal loop need to be in order to be an effective locker padlock

    • @Madmanblogtravel
      @Madmanblogtravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It doesn't need to be thick if you are just in hostels. Thin ones work fine. Also, airport security once confiscated my really thick secure one. The main goal is to make it harder to steal your stuff compared to the stuff of the person next to you.

    how long is the locker padlock. or how long does it need to be in most cases

    • @Madmanblogtravel
      @Madmanblogtravel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you're in hostels you need one normal smallerish luggage lock and one longer lock that has more room in the loop. I don't know the exact sizes, but usually there are 2 kinds of lock sizes, the normal and the longer.
      These days, I still carry everything from this video. The longer lock type has been more useful than I initially anticipated.

    How do u set up the mini backpack lock

    • @Madmanblogtravel
      @Madmanblogtravel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Usually, when you buy it, it is already opened and you just take the metal loop, pull it out, turn it around, and push it down and then change the numbers on the lock to whatever code you want, release the metal loop, and it should be ready to go. But do test this before you travel because sometimes it doesn't work correctly. Is this what you meant?

    • @Madmanblogtravel
      @Madmanblogtravel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can see if I have time, but most locks come with instructions on how to change the code for them and I can't promise that the locks that I have are the same as yours.

    Maybe don't stay in cheapshit hostels at 40 years old? That would be security step #1 for me.

      I recently hear someone I know got their stuff ripped off from the hotel safe at the resort. And some people can't afford to travel at 40 in nice places. This would also be helpful to younger people in hostels.

    Or just don’t be so dang it cheap and check into a decent hotel.
