Did you know this game as 'Rad Warrior'? 😇🕹👌 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= More from 1986: tinyurl.com/1986-C64-GAMES My Top Picks: tinyurl.com/CCGS-BEST-GAMES
I remember this game. I had it for my Commodore 64 as a tape version in one of the HIT-PAK compilations. The game was so complicated, i had never finished the whole game at all 😹. Also, the game logo reminds me of the thrash metal band 🎵🎶, ANTHRAX 🇺🇲 😹🤘. And the logo font reminds me of another heavy metal band 🎵🎶, IRON MAIDEN 🇬🇧 😹🤘.
I knew and played this game on Amstrad CPC. I never finished it but I spent hours on it. I also remember leaving the title screen running because I loved Richard Jospeh's music. Thank you for this video and these carefree memories.
Oh yes. Played this gem of a game. Took me months to get it finished. Slowly drawing maps and plans. Tal, was a bit on the weak side. The cover for this game always reminds me of Maxamillion from the Black Hole film. Comic book did help explain what was going on. Great vid. 🕹 👍
Ahh yes of course, forgotten all about "Black Hole" until you mentioned it now. A quick google search to refresh my memory and yes, definitely looks like Maximilian😇🕹️👌
Palace games had something magical about them. I never completed this one but man I tried.. Not as hard as Cauldron 2 though (is any game?) just hearing the music put back in the time machine to a more pleasant and easy time.
Yeah I think Cauldron 2 is one of the toughest and most frustrating pumpkins I've ever had the pleasure of controlling! Thats for sure... haha. This game brings me right back also, the good times in gaming for sure 😇🕹️👌
I clearly remember wondering why I kept dying upon first playing this game, but when the HUD suddenly appeared upon locating the armour - it was a real 'Woahh!' moment. Great memories 😇🕹️👌
I had the Tandy COCO 3 (Rad Warrior in Canada) version and I loved it so much. I managed to finish it, but I was very young and did not understand english back then. Now I am playing Soulless2 on the C64 mini. Life is good. For me this game was peek visual realism and still is.
Ahh yes, I must admit that Psytronik Software are really pushing the boundaries of just what the Commodore 64 can still do. Awesome games that I see coming out quite regularly 😇🕹👌
I remember this as Rad Warrior. A friend bought me this game as a gift back in the day. I really enjoyed this game! It's a short game... but it's a lot of fun!
I really liked the lore for this game, the whole tribe of surviving long time after a war, the existence of the suit handed down verbally and it turning out to be more of a advanced radiation suit than a superweapon. Gave you some stakes and purpose. And while annoying the hud only coming alive when the suit activates really fit the story. Liked the music too and the graphics were nice.
Be superb to see this made into a sci-fi type film wouldnt it... the perfect twist at the end, with the suit just being a radiation suit all along! 😇🕹️👌
@CheekyCommodoreGamer Sounds like an excellent plot hook t.b.h. I'm now reminded now that an old anime called Genesis Survivor used a similar idea as Antiriad in the plot. Just the people were at medieval level and used machines they thought were magic.
Great game, and another one of my old favourites. Once you knew where everything was, the map wasn't big at all, and completing it became actually quite easy. I always loved the conceit of creating the name Antiriad. In the comic, the elders pull out a "sacred scroll" to show the 'magic' of the armour. It is really an ancient design blueprint for the Anti Radiation armour, and the page is torn so "Anti Rad" looks like "Anti Riad". It was a nice little touch that showed how something technological had become misunderstood as some occult artifact, and how elements of it had been lost over the years to the point where even the name had taken on a new mysterious form. Fond memories of that game, and even the tune was a banger. 😁
This was another of the great platformers good enough for me to take the effort to win it. It was pirated and 60Hz fixed as 'Sacred Armour of Anitriad' in North America as well, I didn't even know Epyx had re-published it over here. Absolute classic and worthy of this series for sure.
This will certainly be amongst many C64 gamers' favourite titles - a brilliant game for its day. Looks and seems a lot shorter than I remembered it the first time around... mind you, I was a lot shorter then too haha 😇🕹️👌
Had a German copy without the book. It created a very cool mystery/sci-fi story in my mind as I discovered all the bits and pieces by myself. Never managed to finish it though.
We all had incredibly great imaginations as kids, especially the 80s... we had to, I suppose. But thats what made gaming in that era pure. I miss those days, but love to re-live the nostalgia in these videos 😇🕹️👌
Interesting to note, but this I think was the first game Dan Malone worked on... Later of the Bitmap Brothers fame... You can almost see the flourish you saw in Speedball 2/Chaos Engine... Especially that HUD.
Ahh yeah, can definitely see what you mean with the HUD and the excellent comic. His work had a very recognisable style, especially with Speedball/Chaos Engine and even Cadaver! All graphically superb in their own right 😇🕹️👌
Definitely worth playing through - great game. Especially when you manage to get all of the power ups and feel super powerful! You'll enjoy this game 😇🕹️👌
"now you can see how 'dead' you nearly are" excellent. Another great video. I like that you praise the good in games but you also don't straight rip into games that aren't quite on the same level like a lot of channels. Personally I find almost all games on the C64 to offer something if played for what they are despite not being comparably great to the best. Anyway Antiriad is certainly a beautifully done game I think we can all agree
Thankyou - yeah, I find it really difficult to rip apart any games really, they are just all too nostalgic to have those opinions, however.. there are terrible games out there. I probably just haven't got to many of them yet! Haha 😇🕹️👌
My brother was very good at this game and could complete it easily. I could only complete it with trainers. Great game. Had been very long since i played it. But this brings back great memories. Not sure if i have the original of this game. I was making a list of all my original games, but two weeks ago I got a Mister FPGA and have been so busy with that. Need to complete my list soon.
I really really want one of those Mister FPGA's... I hear so many cool things about them, you could literally have tons of retro nostalgia all under one roof huh. Great game this but it is tough in places so I can understand the need for trainer 😇🕹️👌
If i had a dollar for every time I had to run around in my underwear looking for the clothes my bother hid, I would have retired at a very early age indeed. A laser-shooting armor suit would have been my ultimate revenge.
A female protagonist would have been interesting since the logo was so very "Iron Maiden" and who was revealed to be in the Metroid suit on the NES? A lady, which blew everyone's mind at the time.
Maybe I'll compile that list sometime in the future and post a longer video with a top 40... thats not a bad idea, the only problem is that there are soooo many Commodore 64 games to go at, it'd be a shame to create that list just yet. But I certainly have one in my head - which one was your all time favourite? Mine changes quite often 😇🕹️👌
@@CheekyCommodoreGamer I think my favourite was Impossible Mission 2 because it was the first digitised speech I’d heard on the C64 and it blew my young mind.
True, either an unlimited amount of lives... or a limited amount of tries! I guess when we were kids, we had all the time in the world to play games, so the need to persevere was great - but with the ability to download the game with pre-built trainers, makes us a lot more impatient to progress 😇🕹️👌
Just watched a video of the Amstrad version.... 'Tal' appears to be trudging through the levels as if the surface is made of sticky tar. Nope, definitely better on the C64 😂🕹️👌
great game. this may sound like blasphemy, but i actually like the graphics in the Spectrum version better. its all hires whereas the C64 mixes hires and multicolor, which to my eye looks very messy
I do remember this game and the map in a local magazine. I always liked the story behind the name (a ripped page). Why did they even bother to change it to something so mundane as "Rad Warrior" is beyond me. Absolutely yawn.
I think the comic came as a promotional item seperate from the game as well. I'm not sure if it came with 2000AD, Crash or Zzap!64 but it must have been with one of them otherwise I'd never have seen it.
Did you know this game as 'Rad Warrior'? 😇🕹👌

Do you know I never realised the connection with "Anti-Rad" being perceived to be Antiriad! Mindblown now... a clever little addition/Easter egg 😇🕹👌
RAD Warrior! OMG,,, Yes, I remember that. I bought it through Commodore magazine. Never got the comic. Super cool.
Glad it brought back some good memories. A great game 😇🕹️👌

Superb game isn't it, especially when you acquire the lasers... then fun really begins 😇🕹️👌
Almost the first Metroidvania, missed it by a month.
I had the Speccy version. Beautiful sprite work and animation in that game.
Ahh yes, the consoles took over with that sort of franchise for sure. Developing it to a new stratosphere I suppose 😇🕹️👌
The game play, the SFX and the music all quality
Very true, adds to the atmosphere of an already great game 😇🕹️👌
Never played it but it looks far too good to leave it under the dust, love the mix of C64 and Speccy graphics

You'll enjoy this one, has to be up there in the high percentages for ratings for sure 😇🕹️👌

this one looks awesome! and the comic book is a super nice touch. that was an excellent introduction to the game. can't wait to give it a boot!
Definitely worth playing through - great game. Especially when you manage to get all of the power ups and feel super powerful! You'll enjoy this game 😇🕹️👌
The music by Richard Joseph was pretty amazing for the time. I didn't play the game as much as I'd just let the intro screen play the music.
What a legend huh, made some absolutely banging tunes for the Amiga too 😇🕹️👌
Never played this one, but it looks like fun! Thanks for this hidden gem!
It's certainly one of the better games, definitely worth playing 😇🕹👌
I had the original tape, really enjoyed this game as a kid
Awesome game
It is one of the really true 'greats' for the Commodore 64, I enjoyed this one a lot too 😇🕹️👌
Loved this game bitd, great nostalgia watching this, nice one
Glad you enjoyed it! This one brings back a lot of great nostalgic memories 😇🕹️👌

First game I ever completed on my Speccy back in 1987..
Good times bro - brilliant memories. Some say that the graphics were even more crisp on the ZX Spectrum version... blasphemy haha 😇🕹️👌
Everyone should try rimrunner an overlooked beautiful palace game
Am sure that'll definitely be on the channel someday - great game too 😇🕹️👌
If i had a dollar for every time I had to run around in my underwear looking for the clothes my bother hid, I would have retired at a very early age indeed. A laser-shooting armor suit would have been my ultimate revenge.
Dont forget the "Hel-Gun"... even in underpants, one of those bad boys would do the trick, for sure 😇🕹️👌
A female protagonist would have been interesting since the logo was so very "Iron Maiden" and who was revealed to be in the Metroid suit on the NES? A lady, which blew everyone's mind at the time.
I learn something new every day - thats just blown my mind also, never had a clue that Metroid was a lady??!! Awesome 😇🕹️👌
You should do a score out of 10 for each game you review. That will help compile a list of TOP 10 or 40 games. Great video and a cool looking game.

A Metroidvania before the term was invented.
Absolutely - a mighty fine one at that 😇🕹️👌

Weapon of choice? A tiny pebble 🤣🤣
The sacred armour of David & Goliath! 😇🕹️👌
Will you please review Barbarian I & II 🙇🏽♂️
Yeah they're already on the channel 😇🕹👌

Takes some doing to finish, but its a great feeling to finally complete it - lovely game this one 😇🕹️👌

No scrolling …
Ahh I see what you mean 🕹️👌
Brilliant game way too short
I agree, its a short(ish) game, made more epic by the awesome suit of armour - especially when fully powered 😇🕹️👌
great game. this may sound like blasphemy, but i actually like the graphics in the Spectrum version better. its all hires whereas the C64 mixes hires and multicolor, which to my eye looks very messy

An early example of how a Metroidvania genre should be made with a fantastic reveal on the actual backstory. Like a 'planet of the apes' vibe 😇🕹👌
