Hey Greg, fellow Singaporean middle-age uncle here. Thanks for sharing your health journey and I totally agree with you. I’ve been on IF and low carbs + no sugar diet since November 2022 and I’ve lost around 20kg of weight, feels better and my gout symptoms have come under control. You’re right, our physiology are different and everyone should take control of our own health. Keep doing what you’re doing and God bless!
It's amazing you can do it because I know in Simgapour, man, the food there!! Yummy...n most rendang or spicy would have Bean paste, night shades, or tiny shrimps, I think you guys called it, HaiBees,..even broccoli n cauliflower can trigger gout, n too much sugar cause inflammation. Well, stay healthy, n God Bless!
Hi Greg, I always enjoy your food blog. Keep up the good work. I am 60 this year and had some seemingly innocent health issues that eventually developed into a serious life crisis in the last few years. My weight increased from 73 to 80kg for my height of 1.72m. I had very bad sleep quality (Some night Zero deep sleep duration as measured by my Mi Band) and was very tired during the daytime, just like what you had experienced. My memory was very bad, I could not recall people I met a few days ago or the location of my car that I had parked the night before. I tried methods such as sleep bugs, relaxation exercises, etc, but the result was not obvious even when they initially seemed to be effective (Probably its psychological). When it eventually developed into a serious personal life crisis, I suspected that it was caused by work stress and dementia, so, I went to TTSH to do a brain check. Eventually, it was found that I had been suffering from "Severe Sleep Apnea". The Sleep test revealed that I stopped breathing once every minute of my sleep due to airway blockage which made it very difficult for me to go into deep sleep. Hence, my body and brain could not recover during the sleep. The results are: tiredness during the day, poor focusing ability, poor memory, bad mood that may eventually develop into depression, induced stress which led to other personal and behavioral problems, body aches, other health issues such as hypertension, and further increase in body weight as a body deprived of sleep tends to crave for unhealthy foods. Don't be fooled by the fact that every night when you went to bed you could fall to sleep quickly. This is not an indication of good sleep, it is because your body is so deprived of sleep that it is trying to go into sleep as soon as it has the chance. Yet, due to sleep apnea, your deep sleep will be very bad and you wake up that next day feeling tired again. What is the causes of Sleep Apnea? Age, Overweight, and some airway structural issues. It is very common for people above 50 years old and especially when you are overweight. It is estimated that around 20% of population have some degree of sleep apnea but 85% of them do not realize it and it will become more severe when we age and put on weight. So, how to cure this? The first step, lose weight! Being overweight is one of the key contributing factors of sleep apnea. So, Greg, as you have been able to reduce your weight, you can see some relief to your old issue. Stop smoking is also a smart move too. Also to avoid drinking alcohol before sleep. As for me, my doctor advised that I wear a CPAP Machine when sleeping at night. This machine induce positive pressure to my airway to ensure that I have uninterrupted breathing throughout my sleep. The result is that I lose more than 12 kg of weight in a year and I am much happier and healthy now. Of course, the was done together with exercise and reducing food intake. I don't do special eating programs as it may lead to other health issues years later. I just try to keep to two meals instead of 3 meals a day and reduce the serving. As we age, we don't need as much food as when we were at the growing stage. Of course, I am also a foodie, so, CKT, Hokkien mee, satay are still my favorites. So, I advise anyone with similar symptoms to seek help from a medical specialist instead of taking advice from non-medical personnel or trying uncovention method. You can first try to measure your deep sleep quality by wearing some heath and fitness devices such as mi band and iWatch that measure deep sleep duration during your sleep. Ideally, you should get deep sleep duration what is close to 20% of your sleep duration. If it is consistently much less than that, it may be a good idea to visit a medical specialist to at least rule that possibility out. This is the first time I wrote such a long comment as this issue touches my heart deeply as I had been unknowingly suffering from this for many years. I hope that someone who may be suffering from Sleep Apnea can gain some insight after reading my comment. Google "Sleep Apnea" and you can learn more about it. More importantly, do not procrastinate. Your health will not only impact yourself, but also the ones who you love.
@@s._3560. Thanks for sharing. There are many suggestions and methods that can be found from Internet and also from people around us. But I suggested that it is better to seek advice from qualified medical professionals for any suspected medical conditions.
Hey Greg, I am 42. I started exercising after a serious gout attack during Circuit Breaker days. I changed my diet too. Zero carbs, protein heavy, vegetables and fruit. Zero added sugar. I lost about 30kg since CB days. I continue my workouts daily and I follow my strict diet on weekdays. Weekends are my “cheat days” where I enjoy bringing my elderly parents out for meals. I feel much happier now than before. My yearly health screening are all good. The doctor even questioned if I was faking my identity when I visited in 2021/22. I never smoked and I stopped drinking in 2014/15. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Hi Greg, I have been following and enjoying your food journey . Trust your health continues to improve. Like you, I quit a 30-year smoking habit so that I can be around to watch my children grow up.
Thanks for sharing Greg. Sharing from perspective of a concerned viewer, please do watch out for elevated ApoB levels on a high saturated fat diet. The balance of evidence still suggests that a high ApoB increases risk for ascvd (atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease). That being said, as a fellow diabetic diagnosed at middle age, i cannot agree more on how cutting down on refined carbohydrates and highly processed food improve blood sugar control and weight loss (along with the accompanying health benefits from weight loss). All the best in your health journey!
I'm 52y.o. soon and have been doing carnivore diet since April 2022. Doing 16/8, which is basically skipping breakfast. Gained lots of muscles and all the benefits, and more, you mentioned. Anyway, keep it up!
So refreshing to stumble across your videos recently. I too , a low carber , since 2020. I have a family history of diabetes and heart disease on my mother’s side. My journey wasn’t to lose weight as I was slim, but to work on my prediabetes and hypertension. I’m now 63 but I feel 36. So many things improved for me, no more hypertension nor the need for medication, no brain fog, lots of energy, no aches or pains in joints, sinus cleared, haven’t been sick for quite some time now . I was born and raised in Singapore, family immigrated to USA when I was a teenager in the mid seventies. I go back on holidays every few years to see friends. I am the only low carber among my friends. Felt a bit lonely in that sense. I still have some carbs once in awhile like when I’m on holiday somewhere. It’s not surprising to learn that Singapore has one of the highest statistics of residents with diabetic driven ckd in the world. The food is so delicious but at the same time destroying people’s health. Will be tuning into your channel often. You and I have a lot in common, also a musician ( see your guitars in the background) 😀 Hope to meet you someday.
One problem with the food in Singapore is it is very high in starch/carbohydrate. Vegetable dishes don't get as much attention in the cuisine as noodles/rice/fish/meats. Salads are almost non-existent.
Way to go Greg. This is the video I have wished to see. Congratulations on your new look. Am also going on this similar diet. IF & low carb diet. Keep it up & the next milestone will be changing your whole wardrobe as your clothes will be downsizing drastically.
Oh man. I have watching your videos so long. I like your candour. Thanks for sharing. I guess I have to watch mine as well. Tc Greg! And once again, thanks for sharing the good food places in Sg.
Thanks Greg for sharing your health journey. Was watching with the hubby and his health history is similar to yours. It was an eye opener for him and he is now considering to follow your footsteps. So glad that you are looking for hawker food that caters to your needs. Please share. This is a new direction of healthier food vlog and you have our support.
I am so sorry, Greg, that you have to go through this poor health experience. However, I am glad you recognized the issues and made an effective change to improve your health. Congrats on your positive journey.
I couldn't agree more with this video, Greg. I'm a massive foodie and have been on a loose intermittent-fasting, low-carb 'diet' for over a decade, and have always felt it very ironic that food bloggers/vloggers have such an _unhealthy_ relationship with food thinking that the healthiest food is soup Yong Tau Foo while everything they give top marks to is absolutely just a guilty pleasure (their default attitude being that tastiness and healthfulness are generally on opposite ends of the spectrum). You've just earned yourself a new subscriber. BTW, you've probably figured it out by now, but the reason your teeth feels stronger is because of your increased Vitamin K2 intake from eating more animal/fermented foods. Cheers!
Hey thanks for your comment! Yes, I’ve read stronger teeth has to do with vitamin k2 and everyone needs a steady supply of it from young for proper teeth development 👌
Hi Greg, I've gone through a similar journey and still on the journey. I am 60, started a health change experiment about 7 years ago; Keto, Carnivore, IF, extended fasting...outcomes are positive. You mentioned that you pooped 4 or 5 times a day, I suspect your new diet might have fixed this as Carnivore diet improves gut health. One title tips from me; don't drink water/liquid with your meals (solid), drink after 2 hours post-meal. This will take your gut and overall health to another level.
thank you greg for making this video. i think this is a great reminder for myself. sometimes i indulge abit too much and yes, even i know it. you make me feel like going to the gym!
Hi Greg, I’m glad you decided to be healthier. although I wouldn’t do a keto diet I think we all benefit from quitting and smoking and being more mindful of what we eat.
Thank you for sharing your vulnerabilities. Am very much a Live to Eat person. Hopefuly with your wise words and experience, I can eat healthier while enjoying what food is available
I am so glad you have found a diet and a lifestyle that works for you. Thank you for being so open and honest with us. Please keep the information coming in future videos!
I was diagnosed with diabetes on late 2021. I was obese too, at 115kg!at age 41. Similar to you, i avoid all sugary stuff and carbs. Then eat mostly soupy dishes like fish soup and yong tau foo. Since i dont smoke and drink much which means my condition not too bad. Then I started to swim and do it 2-3 times a week. 6 mths later, i lost weight (10kg) and manage to control my diabetes and my health also changed for the better. Fast forward to now, my doctor shocked how I turn this around so quickly and keep my health and weight in check. All the markers in the health check up all good! These days, i still a little carbs from time to time and bare minimum when i do and focus mostly on carnivore diet (i dislikes vegges😅) As you mentioned, i am more focus during work, I don't feel tired so easily and i can chase after a bus for 300m without panting hard (likely to my regular swimming) At the end of the day, you are what you eat. I still indulge in sweet or starchy stuff but less frequent and in small amount and when i do ate them more, i will swim to burn them off. Greg keep up your good work!
Hi Greg, I have been watching your videos for some time now as I love Singapore and its food. Sorry to hear about your health issues. I am 55 this year and I had a complete blood check in July this year including OGTT (Oral Glucose Tolerance Test), HBA1C, and other markers. Luckily, I am still metabolically fine. My fasting blood sugar is still in the low 80s, HBA1c is 4.8 but I take note that being 55 I still have to watch what I eat although I don't have to restrict that much. Hope you well!
Thanks for sharing Greg.. I think, weight wise I am where you were in 2021. Honestly, I need to get back on track with my diet and my previous 'healthy' weight.
I have been on high animal protein, animal fat, no processed food, low carbs diet for a few years. I work out everyday. I am in good shape, have low body fat and ideal weight. It can be my unfortunate genes, but my cholesterol has been going up. It runs in my family. I am adjusting my diet now to see if it comes down.
Hello Greg! Your channel has been a source of comfort for me as I'm living in Beijing.I'm so glad that your health is getting better. Thank you for sharing with us. I hope to run into you when i head home for holiday!
Will still support Greg small eats. 加油!Got red marks on my health screening too after past 50 so u are not alone. Looking forward to u sharing food suitable for hi-cholesterol folks like myself. 🎉
Happy for you, Greg! ❤ I also take health seriously 8 yrs ago after I was diagnosed with diabetes and had to go thru a heart bypass. Now I cut down on carbs and sugar and do intermittent fasting daily and on a keto diet 3 times a week. God Bless You, Bro!
Hi Greg! thank you for sharing your life with us. I might be going through the same bad journey for my health and i am only 33. Added on extra 12-15kg in 1.5 years. I might say i have reached peaked tiredness and this video might be a pivotal point too. I hope you could share more recipes/sources of keto/carnivore diet! Thank you. Here to support your channel 100% as i did from the start!
Greg so happy that you on the road for a happy & importantly healthier you. So that you can see kids grow up. Keep up your great health routine. Hope to see you more often 😅 ❤. Cheers!
Hi Greg, fantastic that you have taken this new lifestyle change to better health. With your weight loss, you are actually looking better than your previous self. Keep up your new approach to better health, and looking forward to many more videos from you. All the best.
I didn't go Keto diet but just low carb low calories diet, loss 10kg in 5 month, was 94kg to 84kg now. I also got into habit of exercising at least an hour a day. min 3 time a week. Health really improve alot and most importantly alot of the ingredients can be bought quite cheap at Sheng Shiong if you cook compared to a Keto and carnivore diet.
appreciate the long form video greg. I myself am a 28 yo chap but lately I've also been feeling not at my best, probably due to my love of food, overindulgence yada yada. Thanks for the motivation to get myself to do something about it!
I've been a subscribers for long time and I do enjoy every video that you post. The improvement on your health do make me happy and this video will surely educate others!
Hi Greg, thanks for making this video. Fellow late 40s uncle here. I too have been doing intermittent fasting, now for about 3 years. It has helped me lose over 10kg of weight. I also have cut back on carbs and eat more meat and vegetables. I have found that by eating more meat, I feel fuller and for longer. Vegetables don't have the same effect, in fact it makes me hungrier faster 😅. But I still sort of keep it balanced. Maybe I should cut back on veg. I also try to cook more with lard now, as it tastes better and I do believe oils like canola isn't very healthy. Thanks once again for doing this video, as it gives me the encouragement that what I'm doing is helping my health😊.
Hi Greg, congratulations to you for taking this brave journey of changing your diet to keto/carnivore. Like you, I went on keto/carnivore around 7 months ago. I lost 10 kgs. I am feeling so much better now. I had all the symptoms you mentioned. Now I feel strong, healthy and energetic. I take lots of first cold pressed virgin olive oil as a source of fat and also, for its high polyphenol content. All the best in your on-going journey to optimum health.
Take care, Greg💪 Health is wealth and no money can buy us good health except our own efforts and actions. You definitely inspire me to stay fit and healthy after watching this video. Thanks for sharing your personal matters and the tips! Wish you a healthy life ahead:)
Thank you for sharing your health journey. Have made one myself a couple of years ago as well. Sustainability is key!! Go easy on yourself at times, you're not alone. Wishing you all the best :-)
Greg, well done for going through this route. I have done the same route when I was 60, and I am totally familiar with your experience. Important thing is it works.
for kidney stones, drink more water as the doc said. i had 3 episodes previously. the last was a couple of years ago. a change to my diet; avoided high oxalate veggies and fruits. spinach, okra, brinjals. I was popping vit c 1000mg daily and decided to stop after some vids from youtube after the 3rd episode. not sure if stopping vit c helped in preventing stone build ups or because of the other factors. all the best to your health!
Hi Greg... Im glad you are getting your health back.. Dieting is wats works for you.. Fasting is good too.. Keep doing wat is gd for u.. You can also include Probiotics in your daily routine.. Keep it up
Thanks for sharing. The only way to avoid vegetable [seed] oil is to prepare meals at home, using animal fats, EV olive oil, etc. Over 90% of the commercial food are cooked with seed oil. Seed oil and refined sugar/carb consumption are the main cause of all the metabolic health issues.
Hey Greg, your honesty and openness in sharing your personal health journey is very much appreciated! It serves as a reminder to me and possibly other viewers to think deeper about what they put into their bodies. Looking forward to more videos that you and your health journeys takes us!
Hi Greg, yeah, it stinks to get old. Happy to see that you're on a road to some kind of recovery and have taken charge of doing something about your health. I would say that it is extremely important to get full annual blood tests. It will help you tweak some of your food choices and will tell you where the areas of improvements needs to be. I'm not so sure about the beef fat, as I believe olive oils and avocado oils will offer more health benefits over the long run, but glad you drop the seed oils as they are the worse since they are highly processed. I would suggest also looking into food that help reduce or minimizes inflammation, and snack food that results in lower glycemic load when you crave for a snack, intermittent fasting, and 8 km daily walks. This was done wonders for my own issues. But keep up the good work on your health, and let us know how you're doing from time to time. Looking forward to your future videos.
Great video. My otherhalf and I have been doing this for a few years. Life changing stuff. Love the Low Carb Down Under channel too. Wishing you and yours well😊
Hi Greg, firstly congratulations on your healthy recovery! Your sharing is inspiring me to restart my low/no carb diet. Secondly, as a fellow whisky drinker let me share tt when drinking whisky its more important to enjoy the smell and taste rather than chase volume. When concentrating on smell and taste we will automatically slow down intake to sips. Glad to know tt you've cut down to twice a week!
Great to hear you are getting your health back. I’ve been a follower of Keto diets though I’ve not really been on it as it’s pretty expensive. But I do agree with Greg that health and family are the reasons why we changed to be better and be around longer for them. Keep it Up!
Thanks for sharing your health journey, Greg. I am pre-diabetic & having high cholestrol however, i have not tried Keto diet & intermittent fasting. But I am walking, climbing & doing strength training for 1 mth + and i already felt the benefits of exercise too.
Greg: thanks so much for your honesty and openness in sharing your health concerns. As a person who is recovering from several recent serious health issues, i would like to mention one thing. Finding a good doctor and having them assist this journey is invaluable. The internet is not a good replacement for an experienced knowledgeable medical professional. So many things can be caused by seemingly unconnected habits that a good diagnostician/doctor can be a tremendous help in regaining your health. Please stay well, we all look forward to seeing your videos for many year to come :)
Greg, my opinion is a little bit of carbo is ok. You are basically on right trek, but I think you should add in more vegetables or greens. Also the meat has to be grass fed meat(for omega 3), and also right kind of carbo. I think the 168 is good for you. May b you want to refer to the blue zone countries diet for further reference. Avoid sugar and less salt. I enjoy whiskies too, only on weekends. I am not a dietitian, just sharing what I know, all best and take care....cheers
Hey Grey, congratulations to your achievement towards a fulfilling journey of getting your life back, though dogmatic to say the least for the major populace. I’ve been on this disciplined carnivorous lifestyle for the last 18 months and have had the same astounding results, if not more. All my problems have totally disappeared and can’t be thankful enough for discovering this way of lifestyle. Today for the first time in many decades, I’m back to the weight when I was once a teenager and yes, I’m going 58 now and have never felt better 😊 and fitter !
Nice. Looking forward to your new reviews. IF worked for me to to reset my irregular bowel intervals. There seems to be a lack of choices when it comes to "healthy" food when eating out. I think it is a chicken and egg thing where you have no supply because of no (low) demand.
Hi Greg, I believe you are getting healthier, stronger and happier every day! Thank you for sharing your journey and the diet and foods that you are having and helping you recover. The many research out there can only be proven by people who actually practise them. I always look forward to your reviews because you have a different voice and take on the stalls and food you feature. Even though you mentioned that what works for you is pertaining to you, I strongly agree that we should all give it a shot to see improvement in our health. I hope you will continue to feature many more authentic food stalls in the days ahead!
It might not be too late to start eating organic foods, and to stay away from rubbish foods. Eating organic foods and staying away from rubbish foods have improved my health. I am 53 now, and I feel like I was still in my 30 year old. Hope these help. I like your food reviews. I Iove Singaporean foods so much.
Take some tumeric powder with freshly grind black powder for anti-inflammatory effect. I like that you will feature eating places using natural oil and will definitely try them.
I used to jog before two years ago...but my knee giving me issue for the last one year as well as ankle issue. I'm 54, so I try to go swimming nowadays, I eaten less meat n processed food for sometimes as well as alcohol. I have been taking health supplements for few months. To me, from 50s onward, nothing beat a healthy body. I have a bad COVID symptoms last Oct, and not been sick like flu since then. And drink more plain water.
Good one Greg, we're about the same height. I'm at about 105kg and can't reduce...got yoyo and inflammation here n there. I should try this. Btw, beef fat rending via air fryer works best. Put the frozen fats on an elevated sieve. Set time and Walk away

There are some Oropharyngeal exercises one can do to help reduce sleep apnea.

Good of you to share whats helped you. Take care.
So timely ! I’m going to do this.
I am so sorry, Greg, that you have to go through this poor health experience. However, I am glad you recognized the issues and made an effective change to improve your health. Congrats on your positive journey.
Thanks for the sharing, hopefully your health continues to get better! all the best!
Thank you for sharing. Health is important.
I like Greg’s candid sharing…
Yes, he’s long winded … but I wish him well; and look forward to his future posts…
Hi Greg, keep it up your good work. Best of luck! 💪🤞
Do whatever works for you, will still watch your food vlogs either way.
Thank you Greg. Keep your sharing up. Looking forward for more. 🙏🏻
Hi Greg, You definitely look very healthy now. Saw you recently in Chinatown Complex hawker centre near the satay stall. Keep up the good work.
Take care of your health, bro. Thanks for sharing.😊
Take care, I been suffering from stomach problem and IBS for one and half year now.
Take care, Greg. You’re doing great!
thank you greg for making this video. i think this is a great reminder for myself. sometimes i indulge abit too much and yes, even i know it. you make me feel like going to the gym!
Well done Greg...keep it up....my story and health journey is similar to yours...i can say that the diet works after 3 yrs on it 👌
Greg, congrats and thanks for sharing!
Appreciate the honesty Greg and a fair representation of disclaimers.
These days, i still a little carbs from time to time and bare minimum when i do and focus mostly on carnivore diet (i dislikes vegges😅)
As you mentioned, i am more focus during work, I don't feel tired so easily and i can chase after a bus for 300m without panting hard (likely to my regular swimming)
At the end of the day, you are what you eat. I still indulge in sweet or starchy stuff but less frequent and in small amount and when i do ate them more, i will swim to burn them off.
Greg keep up your good work!
Thank you Greg. Much appreciated.
Take care Greg. Appreciate your past videos nevertheless.
Thanks for sharing.. keep up the awesome work.. looking forward to more reviews!
Me too. High cholesterol 😅
Hi jenn, nice pfp. You don't look your age
Haha, me and my daughter are both grappling with high cholesterol concern 😅
Great to hear you stay off the tempting carb and sugar.. praying for a friend who did not not give up both, now going for kidney dialysis 3x a week.
Happy for you, Greg! ❤
I also take health seriously 8 yrs ago after I was diagnosed with diabetes and had to go thru a heart bypass. Now I cut down on carbs and sugar and do intermittent fasting daily and on a keto diet 3 times a week. God Bless You, Bro!
Been following and watching your vids for awhile my friend. Get well soon! Good on you to focus on your health! looking forward to you posting more!
Hi Greg! thank you for sharing your life with us.
Thank you for sharing Greg!! Similar prediciment as you, will do more resesrch and impliment some of the stuff that works for you
That was a great video. Thanks for sharing the experience. Lots of people don’t care what they eat even with so much knowledge nowadays.
Hey bro take care health is wealth and you do what is important for you and your family
I always enjoyed your show and I'm really happy to hear you gaining back your health. Best of luck and take care bro.😀
Thanks for sharing Greg. Go to hear that you're on your way to better health.
appreciate the long form video greg.
Thanks!
Thank you for your donation!
I do keto and carb cycling every quarter with intermittent fasting and it helps with my mental focus. I'm extremely alert with KETO diet
congrats on reaching 40 k!!!
Thanks Mr.Greg for sharing
Best to cook our own food. Outside it is very hard to find good natural protein. Sodium is high too.
Well, that was way better than expected. No need to apologise for not doing a food review. This "health review" will help a lot of people. Good job!
It's the libido that was your motivation lah, bro! ;) Kidding!!!
Greg ,is good that you change your diet 👍
Salute to you for sacrificing your health to eat and eat all the unhealthy food to give us the foodie reviews ❤
Very inspiring Greg, keep up the good work!
BTW love your food blogs, unpretentious, real common man food, not some ladidaaa atas culinary experience. jia youuu bro. i am a greg eats fan
Very educational video. Thank you for sharing.
