In the UK most people will look at national news first followed by international news with the local news taking a distant third because most of us have little time for squirrels on skateboards outside of meme compilations. This is especially prevalent in the way TV news is presented.
Well the only people interested in that are politicians, but the Btitish News has to cover it just in case an MP is skiving from their official representation of their constituents in Parliament.
When I visited Florida I used to enjoy talk radio because of the stupid people that would phone in. One I still remember is a woman who was concerned about the welfare of fire flies, who she was concerned were been killed in their thousands by hitting windscreens on cars. She felt that this was a danger to both the fire flies and the driver because it was obscuring the drivers view. Nothing wrong with that but then stupid kicked in, she wanted Florida law changed so that people would be forced to smear cooking oil on their windscreens so when the fire fly hit it would slide off and not be hurt it seemed beyond her comprehension that te driver would not get a clear view of the road frm having oil smeared all over their wind screen.
I'm in the UK. Yesterday our breakfast news programme had coverage of the mass shooting in Alabama. In the 90's I worked for a daily County Newspaper. After 120 years due to dwindling circulation it changed to a weekly. Provincial newspapers also have to take into account what their advertising customers' leanings and beliefs are.
Even what is considered "left leaning" media in the US is thought of as almost all to the right from the point of the UK/Europe. This leaves only minor YT channels and the like such as TYT considered to be on the left from a UK/European perspective.
I'm from the UK, I agree the BBC and Channel 4 are the two I would most rely on for reliable information. I watched Fox News a couple of times whilst in the States, I couldn't believe people would take them seriously about anything. There are still a couple of local papers where I live, but I know that the internet had a big impact on print media. The Evening Chronicle has been in continuous print since 1764 when it started as a weekly newspaper.
Out of interest in March 2024 I compared the news stories on a UK TV channel as compared to a US TV channel. For the UK I used the BBC evening bulletin and for the US I used the NBC one. The results were interesting. BBC Domestic stories: 7 (54%) Stories involving both the UK and a foreign country: 2 (15%) Purely foreign stories: 4 (31%) NBC Domestic stories: 9 (90%) Stories involving both the US and a foreign country: 1 (10%) Purely foreign stories: 0 (0%) I think that tells you all you need to know about the lack of knowledge that most Americans have about the world outside their borders.
London has many local Newspapers, heavily funded by government. They can be bought in the local newsagents, sometimes in free street kiosks and sometimes free in Libraries. We also have a main commercial newspaper, The Evening Standard, and a main Events and Entertainment guide called Time out.
They are not heavily funded by the government. Sadly most have been bought by the Murdoch News Group, and Australian Multimillionaire/, billionaire who supports right wing policies. His sons are now suing him and trying to break up his empire, which may have a huge effect or no effect at all.
Two UK headlines from a month ago on the same story: "Homeless man convicted for pushing postman onto rail track" "Violent migrant jailed for attempted murder"
I am Canadian but I have had the fortune to observe both American, UK, European and Canadian news. Most countries do seem to have more focus on the National then international than local. I wouldn't say we had less community level fostering of relationships though. The emphasis on national and international is much more pronounced though. The main thing I have definitely noticed that she did not even broach, is the US news tends to be much sensationalized than other countries. The main goal is most about getting a response both emotional and psychological, whichever stirs up their audience and sells more especially if fear and distrust is engendered. The commercial aspect is key, money talks and the main networks prioritize stories that make them the most money or influence and hush or blunt those that do niot. What is reported often seems to be hyped and spun to support whatever partisan leaning the media outlet supports. There also seems to be a great deal less true investigative journalism in the main media outlets and certain less popular subjects are carefully skirted around, omitted or buried especially when it comes to these media's donors, supporters and audiences. This is true in all the US spectrums. There also seems to be less trust in and incorporation of scientific studies and findings than elsewhere. Why this is the case i cannnot tell you but it is what I and others have observed. It also became more apparent during the pandemic that many other countries seemed to trust their scientific community's words than US did and many US citizens in fact seemed to carry a deep distrust and therefore seemed to carry less weight further ascerbated by the bipartisan leanings and influences. As the presenter mentioned bias is and has always been part of media and journalism but this has definitely been elevated to an artform in US news and this leaves your citizens as a whole both less informed and poorer in my opinion as it leaves many of US population in the dark with what else maybe going on in the world making America more isolated, ignorant and nmore vulnerable to manipulation both outward and internal. If you want some good examples of this difference I'd suggest looking at Canada's CTV and CBC's the National News, UK's BBC News and one of two of Australian newscasts (suggested as these are all English speaking news sources) to see what is being reported and more importantly how the news is reported and you will see a clear difference. These sources are all easily found and viewed. All as per usual contain the usual bias but are very much different on how they present the news. Highly recommend this.
Just my personal opinions; With the UK newspapers, what you have to remember is that they offer different types of news, i.e., with The Sun, it's a lot more concentrated to celeb fodder than anything else. The Telegraph is more focused on local news or regional news. The Guardian and the Independant are more business focused, but not saying th dont have some of the other news, just a different audience. So it's worth considering when looking at these stats! I've always relied on ITV news instead of BBC News, just preference on format I guess, they still cover the same news. I do agree with some of the comments about how the news is being told, because it does show the news channels/papers angle they will tell the story from depending on their underlying agenda!
I volunteer as a Tour Guide in York England and would agree that there are gaps in American Education. Here are some examples of the questions they ask:- What came first Medieval or Roman? Why did we chose an American name for our City? What part of England was first settled? History is a blend of militarism, nationalism, politics and religion leading to propaganda. I think that the US uses history as a propaganda tool to reinforce its diverse population into a loyal flag worshipping whole. Fortunately the internet and even TH-cam is now bypassing any blocks to knowledge and so we may now start to see some changes.
hmm, this could have been a lot better if she had done direct comparisons to global, national and local news stories on the same day in both countries. interesting to see how much farther right the us is overall.
I’ve never thought Americans were uneducated. You can only learn what you’ve been taught. If you read something from various sources that all are in agreement on an issue, you’re likely to believe it, I don’t think nationality comes into question.
So it has nothing to do with the American education system and the correspondingly low literacy rates in the US. People who have received an inferior education are, by definition, uneducated. It's not thier fault. It's the responsibility of the inadequate education system. To solve a problem it must first be recognised.
Please ignore that chart that was presented for US news outlets. While it wasn't the reactors fault for including it, it has been widely debunked for massively favouring establishment media while dunking on very talented independent journalists, who in the last few years in particular have proven far more trustworthy with much less bias, than those listed at the top.
The Democrat politics would be considered at least as far right as the Conservatives here . The BBC seems to upset both sides of the political spectrum equally so they are probably being unbiased .
