Thank you so much for sharing this Gabi, it saved me a lot of hassle and headache👍
Had the same coldstartproblem (from about +5°C and down) on my 1290 SA 2015 but now after fixing the valve clearance it starts fine every time.
Even had the bike sitting outside in - 12°C a whole night and it started fine in the morning.

@@carloslargo9551 Hello again! Just got hold of one of the guys and he said they set it to minimum specs.
      So from the manual:
      Valve clearance
      Exhaust valves at: 20 °C (68 °F) 0.25… 0.30 mm (0.0098… 0.0118 in)
      Intake valves at: 20 °C (68 °F) 0.10… 0.15 mm (0.0039… 0.0059 in)
      Hope it helps!

@@pereklund7112 Thank you for your help. I should go to Hungary next summer (my parents came from Hungary and moved to Switzerland in 1956) and I will make my 30 000 km service in Budapest should be 70% cheaper. If I do it in Switzerland with the valves it will cost me € 3000.00 at least. I also want to change oil in the forks. At € 140.00 per hour work at my KTM dealer in Geneva it will be half the price of the bike.
Thanks very much for your help becauce since a week the nignt its below 0° but in my garage its 10° but after work with the bike on the street it wont start.

One cold evening my KTM 1090 R refused to start and I found this video. Looked similar: not starting below 4C, I warmed it with heaters and it started! So I did the full valve check and adjusted shims of 4 valves. But they were NOT too much out of spec, that got me thinking and I checked the pulse generator - it was dead! - a simple wire coiled around a magnet and filled with epoxy was dead!

~90,000km without any valve adjustment is pretty incredible...in a way you’re lucky there was no damage to the valve train. It’s great you were able to get it running again properly...did you do the shims yourself, or the dealer?

Yes this is what happened to me and i have posted my video on my channel. I had KTM replace the battery, starter motor and filters. It turned out to be the valve clearance.

Well, as per service schedule the valve clearance should be checked every 30.000 km. Were yours always within limits? We have the same problem now with 1190R Adv. at mileage around 85.000 km but the difference is that the bike was recently at KTM workshop and besides some electronic issues we needed to check with diagnostic they also checked the valve clearance and said no need to adjust.. So where is the truth now. Btw. we replaced the batter with lithium one which in all our bikes work perfectly without maintenance or charging. Only the Adventure has issues with starting at lower temperature which is not really low here in Cyprus.

Did you solve the issue with your bike? I'm having the "not starting when cold" issue as well and i would like to know if the cause for that could be something else besides the valve adjustment.

You mentioned you installed a stronger starter motor. Do you have the make or part number for that part?

    .26 changed to .23??? The manual says intake should be at 0.1 - 0.15? and exhaust 0.25 - 0.3

I see a few comments here about valve adjustment, did this fix everyone's problem? I have a 1050 and is doing exactly that, changed batteries, checked sensors, the works, and still doesn't work.
Can anyone please suggest the valve fitting specs for the 1050?
    Thanks,
    Oliver

In my case the real problem was .... pulse generator! 1090 R refused to start in cold but started when I warmed it up with heater. Did valve adjustments, but real problem was that in the cold the pulse generator was open ! I guess some tiny breakage in the coil.
