    You might want to check with the floor about the hand where the guy checked out of turn. Some rooms have rules where if a person makes a passive action out of turn, they can not make an aggressive action in turn. If they call out of turn or check they can not raise.

    One way to think about the angler... You're an aware enough player to see what he did, so no matter how it works out he ends up costing himself money. You bet small and folded, when if he just called your bet you probably pile it all in on the river and likely lose. The other option, if you really did suspect him up front would have been to check to him to lock in his check, in which case you again put less money in (and get to realize your FH draws in which case you stack him). So unless he is such a tricky player that this was a false angle (doing it *without* the nuts to get you to bet-fold), you probably save money either way by being smart and aware.

    Been following you for a while. Respect your game because you’re very real and relatable.
    That being said, I’ve seen a few amateur players at smaller rooms unintentionally act out of turn, whether it’s a bet or a check, ESPECIALLY when they hit their miracle card. If he was first to act it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he’d check to you so he could C/R. Might just have gotten over excited combined with an overplay.
    From my POV this is similar to someone huffing and puffing before shoving. It’s a form of dishonest play but not against any rules.
    The silver lining here is An experienced player (such as yourself) sees this and makes the very easy snap fold.
    On the off chance he wasn’t intentionally angling I probably would have simply made a mental note and thanked him for bailing you out.

    The “Angleshooting” would make a great thread! Of course he’s going to do the, “I thought you checked, so I checked, but if you bet of course I’m going to raise, I have a good hand.” The best thing you did was to call him out, so other people won’t fall for this b.s. or think that behavior is okay. What you might have done is call the floor over - they might have only reminded him to bet “in turn”, but it would have put him on notice. I have learned to immediately table change. If I’m going to play a game I like, I’m going to play with people I enjoy being at the table with. Good luck!

  • @carlsullivan8861
    @carlsullivan8861 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    You are tripping about that hand. It shouldn't happen, but don't assume you know why he did it. There's rules about it (which you know apparently) and he's forced to check had you checked, YOU changed the action.

    Also, great content! Your bankroll, your betting, and your explanation of your thought process are all very relatable! So many recent vloggers seem to get in these crazy hi stake games, bluffing and showing massive wins. It’s entertaining, but if your average player follows their strategy they will end up miserable and broke. Complex strategy is often lost on 1/2 players. Its hard to bluff someone who only plays their own hand. Your stuff is solid play, realistic numbers, with a smile 😁

    Poker is tough. On one hand it's nonstop competition for MONEY, and you gotta let people's BS tactics roll off of you while staying focused. On the other, you don't want it to harden you so much that you become less of a human being as a result. Major props for the way you so succinctly called that dude out. Let's go Ash, hard to believe it's been 2 years already. Unfortunately in life you are going to run in to people who are not honorable and will try to get away with everything they can to get an edge. You made the right decision, you spoke your peace and then you walked. Playing hungry, tired and mad usually just leads to bad calls and chasing in an attempt at vindication. File that away in the lessons learned bin and keep on rocking it. It's only up from here!

    Love your videos. But I think you overreacted in berating the “angler.” I understand you felt taken advantage of in the moment (and its sucks to hit a set and lose the pot) but he’s probably a deeply flawed (losing) player you WANT in the game and his antics probably got you OFF the hook in that particular hand by alerting you to his trap (if it is an angle, it’s not a very effective one)There is also a world where it was not a deception - perhaps he thought he was checking behind with a draw, but turned it into a semi-bluff in reaction to what he perceived as your attempt to steal the pot from him once he had signaled weakness.

      She was actually braiding that player before it even happened. Or maybe because it was edited commentary she already knew what was going to happen. I don’t understand why the majority of her videos or her calling people names and suggesting people don’t know how to play. I believe this was a won two games she was on. If she is such a professional, you think she’d be at a higher game. I watch many poker Vlogs, but hers is the only one I have seen where she calls the other players names, says that they don’t have any skill or know how to play, and acts like she’s better than them.

  • @MXDRE907

    Ok, so there is a rule to protect the game from this. Just like a bet out of turn stands if the action hasn’t changed… a check out of turn means he can now only check, or call a bet. His out of turn action means he can no longer take an aggressive action (ie: raise). That rule is there for this exact scenario. The floor should have ruled that his options were to either call, or fold.

Unfortunately, there are plenty of anglers in poker, the world is not fair Ash - you know that right? This exact situation happened to me a few weeks back. I never said anything at the time, but what I realized is that you should do exactly what you would have done anyway. Don't change your actions, and the results are essentially the same; completely defusing his feeble attempt. Interestingly it was an older guy who did this to me as well. Which is interesting, old guys so close to death are usually much nicer players or at least not shady. Good philosophy leaving when not feeling it...I've been doing that a lot more lately and enjoying the results.

    I'm with you on the angle shooter, that sort of thing really gets me. It's funny how polarizing it is, and so many people defend or applaud that sort of behavior.
    I was playing at Aria last night and the dealer called out a guy for slowrolling a multi way showdown and it was nice to see.
    Unfortunately today civility and respect take a back seat to self-interest for a lot of people both on the table and off.

    That's a tough one. I think there should be a rule against significantly changing the action after acting out of turn. Generally if a player bets out of turn, that bet must stand. They can't bet out of turn and then decide to change to a check after being checked to. Perhaps there should be a rule that a player that checks out of turn is only allowed to check or call. In my experience, players that legitimately accidentally check out of turn are doing it often as they lack experience. It doesn't just generally happen one time in a session.

      I have played where such a rule was in effect; I thought it was pretty universal - I guess not.

    I’m definitely guilty of checking out a turn. Not as an angle, but just because I’m not as experienced. I think it would be completely legit. If they implemented a rule. If you check out of term, you can only flat call. And then immediately showdown.

    I would have asked the dealer to clarify the action and if out of turn action is binding (here in L.A. it's not). Let the guy know that you know what he's up to.

    Pretty unlucky about the rulings there, where I play if you check out of turn you can't take any aggressive action when it comes back to you so not a good idea to try an angle shoot up here in montreal. Maybe you get the rules updated? 🤞

    Did his check out of position really change the action in this situation too much? You were going to bet turn and he was going to raise regardless. He picked up no information or didn't really change the action by acting out of turn.
    Also just finished the vid. So satisfying to watch you destroy dude to your right. Nice finish!

      the point of the angle (checking out of turn) was to feign weakness. it was a scummy move intended to make villain seem a lot weaker than he was. while it didn’t change the action per se, it changed our perception of his hand strength.

    • @dingaonhockey
      @dingaonhockey ปีที่แล้ว

      @@jcw8955 I just don't know how that particular player could think it was any advantage if his move is to jam overtop of any bet. If anything wouldn't it cost villain money if he's feigning weakness and hero puts less money into the pot because of it?
      Or was the angle meant to induce a bluff? Sorry trying to wrap my head around it

    • @jcw8955
      @jcw8955 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@dingaonhockey yes but villain thought his angle would work. he didn’t know that Ash was savvy/experienced enough not to fall for it. doesn’t change the fact it was a dirty move that might deceive other people, especially recreational players.

    It's hard to make a judgement since we're only hearing one side of the story. What is your history with this player? Has he been caught doing it before? You don't think he could've had QJ? Appreciate you so much Ashley but I think you should probably let it go.
