- The German National anthem played here on a Victorian music box made in 1868.
Composed by Joseph Haydn in 1797, it was the national anthem of the Austro-Hungarian Empire until its break up in 1918. It was adopted by Germany in 1922 and is still the national anthem to this day.

This is the music box tune I would've expected least! As a politically neutral German I'm proud that this actually happened
It's not common to hear this on a music box
'politically neutral German' lol?
@@G1CAAAAEO That means I'm not seeing this as anything political. I'm kind of honored in a way without thinking about what every stereotype says
A music box is an interesting thing to be proud of.
@@G1CAAAAEO I don't know what you mean, but you can be proud of your country without being overly political, also when the past is so complicated there are many issues that can be easily politicized.
Oh, it's so beautiful! It still sounds like brand new. Thanks for sharing 😍

"Glorious things of thee are spoken, Zion city of our God." It was a hymn long before it became the National anthem of Germany.
“Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser“. It was a hymn long before „Glorious things of thee are spoken“
Music was written by Haydn, lyrics by Haschka, as a God Save the King-type anthem (“Gott erhalte Franz den Kaiser") for Kaiser Franz II, Holy Roman Emperor, first performed 1797 in Vienna. Later known as the Kaiserhymn.
Numerous adaptations for other purposes the most famous being the appropriation of the tune for the liberal-nationalist Deutschlandlied in 1841.
there was no Germany back then, gott erhalte gott beschutze was anthem of the Austrian empire. In 1842, Deutschlandlied was written on the hymne of the gott erhalte gott beshutze. This anthem was created to increase the pan-german nationalistic feelings among germans for the creation of a german state including Austria (Austria is ethnically german). Austria and Germany were the same, Austria was a part of germany and was assumed to be the leader of the Germans.
I love this tune👍🏻👍🏻❤️🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪❤️❤️
Germany used this tune as its national anthem starting in 1919, so if this was composed before 1919 then I'm sure this was the national anthem of the Austro-Hungarian empire
The Deutschlandlied was first used some years after the Vienna congress the melody was based on the Austrian Kaiserhymne
@@chaos1710ty for the information
@@chaos1710 yeah, you both are right. This relic is itself a historical anomaly. There must be very few, if this is not the only one, and the melody was the Austro-Hungarian Empire anthem back then.

Every time I hear this anthem I think of “Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser” the Austro-Hungarian anthem. Because obviously its the same tune
That was a beautiful version though

Though the words to Deutschlandlied were written in 1841, it didn't gain popularity until around the turn of the 20th Century. More than likely, the music box is playing this.... th-cam.com/video/w81MS8qDb80/w-d-xo.html

if it's from 1868 it's more likely to be related to the original, the Austrian "Kaiserlied"

Not the German anthem then, but the 🇦🇹 Austrian "Gott beschütze Franz den Kaiser !"
Not quite, the Austrian Anthem by 1868 was Gott Erhalte, Gott Beschutze.
Gott Erhalte Franz den Kaiser was the personal anthem of Holy Roman Emperor Franz II

In 1868 this would have been the Austrian anthem, not the German or Prussian one.
