  • This is my personal Top 50 TurboGrafX-16 / PC-Engine games of all time, all in a 60 Frames Per Second, 1080p Video Format!
    NOW ON PATREON! / juganawt
Some controversial decisions were made. Did your favourite game make the cut? The list is a little heavy on Shoot 'Em Ups, and some of you might complain about that - I'd argue that the entire system is heavy on Shoot 'Em Ups, and that's why there are so many on this list!
Please turn on Annotations for a little background info of each selection. If you like what you see, please RATE, COMMENT, and SUBSCRIBE!
I hope you all notice, but with each and every video I put out there, I try to improve the videos and take notice of your constructive criticism!
The Top 50 starts at 01:38 if you want to skip the horrendous '90s acting in the intro!
    Top 50 - 01:52
    Top 40 - 04:23
    Top 30 - 07:43
    Top 20 - 12:47
    Top 10 - 20:18
    Top 5 - 25:18
    Number 2 - 28:18
    Number 1 - 29:19
    My selection criteria:
    1. Only 1 Game per franchise allowed (Unless in different genres)
    2. No SuperGrtafX or Super CD-ROM games (they have their own list)
    3. Games must be playable without needing to be able to read Japanese text
    4. It must still be fun to play today - Hence why this is my top 50 games of all time!
This is MY personal top 50! Your results may vary - you might disagree, and you are entitled to that opinion. If you really feel strongly about your top game missing out on a spot, please leave a comment below and explain why you feel it deserves to be in the list!
Who knows, maybe I'll play it, and it could be included in an amended list sometime.
    Anyhow, enjoy!

xiaochicash it was but it was blazing fast just as fast as the Genesis 16 bit CPU! But unlike the Genesis 16 bit address bus and SNES 8 bit address bus the TurboGrafx 16 had a 21 bit address bus! So it's CPU was very comperable! Oh don't forget it had a true 16 bit GPU with 482 on screen colors! Amazingly powerful 8 bit machine!!!!!

    • @ricsim78
      @ricsim78 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@kh7955 I think the biggest issue was NEC marketing was sporadic and cheesy (for example, the intro of this video). They did a poor job marketing their product and it showed. Nintendo did not need to market SNES and still did, Genesis had cool ads and was the "cool system" thanks to that. My parents got me Turbo Grafix-16 for my birthday after I begged for it for almost a year. Nintendo hurt them badly also with their "if you make games for us, you cannot make them for anyone else" policy back then, which should have been unlawful! It really was an amazing system and felt more futuristic than the SNES and Genesis in looks and the size of cartridges (not to mention it was the first with a CD-ROM attachment). The accessories were very expensive for younger gamers and the fact it only had mono sound output without an expensive $100 adapter was quite stupid and a bad oversight in an otherwise solid package. But I loved mine and still play the games with my emulators to this day!

I have a soft spot for the TG-16, but ultimately it was a system that fell in the tail end of the 8-bit era before the 16-bit era. It makes sense to me in retrospect that I had the NES for years, I got the TG-16 before the SNES came out and it feels like a bridge, even though the PCE/TG-16 could outperform the SNES in games like shooters with large numbers of sprites with no slowdown.

Warms my heart that there are so many great games on the system even though there were less than 300 hucards released. For my money the PC/Grafx had the best quality to quantity game ratio ever.

There are a lot of "good games" on PC Engine but not much "awesome games". In comparison the Mega Drive and SNES have better libraries, sure they have more stinkers but also more standout games and more overall variety (the PC Engine hardware is quite limited to handle genres such as beat 'em ups, run 'n guns or racing games as good as what the MD/SNES can do). Also multiplats are usually better on Mega Drive/SNES than on PCE.

+Juganawt I think it was way better than the SNES and Genesis ports at the time. I remember when I ran into the TG16 version at a con after playing the SNES (and occasional Genesis) versions in the 90s. I was surprised. It was strictly better in every way. I think the first SF2 version on SNES to overtake it was Super.
I think the reason for this was the SNES and Genesis versions were all based on the original port of the game for the SNES (World Warrior). It was good but clunky. Rather than port Champion Edition or Hyperfighting from scratch, I think they just converted the World Warrior port to the new editions (and then ported to Genesis for Champion Edition.) But the TG version felt like an entirely new port.
I was watching this and was thinking "Where is Street Fighter?" And getting more frustrated the closer you got to number one. Really pleased to see it at the top. It is one of those games that truly shows what developers can do with a limited console late in its life if given a chance.

Errr, no. The PC Engine version of Street Fighter 2 is worse than both Mega Drive and SNES. The PC Engine version doesn't even run fullscreen, lacks parallax scrollings, lacks turbo options, lacks the third bonus stage... I could go on and on...
Also both the PC Engine and SNES versions lack the CPS-1 combos whereas the Mega Drive version has them all.
The Mega Drive version is easily the best overall but it's actually this version which should have been made from scratch cuz the Mega Drive could have handled an even better version but it was based on SNES limited assets (same for the PCE port btw) while the Mega Drive could have run the game in higher resolution, with bigger sprites and such.

The best way to get crisp video recordings from actual hardware is to RGB mod your TG16 / PC Engine system (I have a modded PC Engine Duo R). This gives you the crispest source to work with, which you can run through your capture device (in my case, an Elgato Game Capture HD card recording on highest bitrate)
Then load up Sony Vegas 13 or similar editing software, import and upscale from there.
Chase HQ and Mr. Hell were SO close to making the list. Ninja Warriors On the other hand.....

Of all the games showcased here , Salamander, Afterburner II and Outrun were the most notable games on the system. Not to say that other other games were bad at all. But those titles were very good ports on this system. I guess that's why the Turbo GrafX-16 wasn't as popular in the US as opposed to the over seas market.

    • @Juganawt

+P0V3RTY09 the TG16 was a powerhouse in comparison to its peers and should have grabbed a bigger market share. The problem is, NEC's marketing department simply SUCKED and totally screwed up the sales approach for the system. Look at my intro for prime examples of it!

And the Mega Drive was also poorly marketed in some regions, especially in Japan where it had much less exposure than the PC Engine while the PC Engine benefited of the huge PC-88/98 userbase as well as further exposure through tournaments such as Hudson' caravan stages.

I think that the PC Engine tends to be overrated (just look at some other comments here...) but it's also overlooked, some games for it deserve more exposure.
As for the popularity, as I explained it was very popular in Japan. The already existing and huge NEC PC-88/98 userbase helped a lot but the system was also well exposed through marketing and tournaments. Lastly, the fact that it was the first system with CD games also helped, this meant games with anime cutscenes and all, something that the japanese market has always been fond of.
But the PC Engine never caught the same attention in other regions. Probably that the system's limitations were more apparent there, I notably think about the single controller port, the rather limited sound or the lack of parallax scrollings support. Also the games weren't as groundbreaking nor as original as what can be found on Mega Drive or SNES. And again the fact that most of the library was released for the CD add-on didn't help either.
Also worth mentioning that the PC Engine was sold in some european countries. It was officially distributed in France and also sold in uk, spain... but it never really took off there either unlike the Mega Drive or SNES.

When the TurboGrafx 16 came out, one of the reasons it didn't do good is because the rumor that went around was that it had two 8 bit CPUs working together thus 16 bit! And everyone was like that sucks! Now if they would've just told the truth and said that it had one 8 bit CPU running twice as fast as the SNES CPU, and it's CPU had a 24 bit address bus unlike the SNES 8 bit address bus! And it had not one but two 16 bit graphics processors capable of displaying 482 colors on screen vs the Sega Genesis 64 on screen! They might of did better because doesn't that make it seem just as good as the competition if not better? Back then nobody mentioned that it had two 16 bit graphics processors!!! I guess there marketing department didn't study what Sega was doing! Sega was telling everyone that there Genesis was better that the SNES because of blast processing! But Sega failed to mention that the rest of their specs were inferior to the SNES! If Sega was doing that to the SNES then NEC could've done this with Sega and said the TurboGrafx 16 had 5 times the colors on screen than the Genesis had!!! I think it all comes down to marketing and NEC failed to deliver in this department!

I'm also using RGB modded Duo-R, going to one of those cheap Chinese unnamed HD upscalers, which feeds through to an Elgato HD capture device for recording to PC. Then, TH-cam does its thing and applies bitrate compression down from 30mbit source to about 5.

When you have a big enough army, you can enshrine them to believe in you as a god, and they will fight for you against opposing gods. Once you have enough followers, you can wipe out your enemies by smiling them with volcanic eruptions, quicksand, earthquakes etc until your followers are victorious and remove the enemies from existence.

Michael Pelstano I'm not sure if you were of age during that period but I still recall the TG not getting the mainstream marketing that both Nintendo and Sega had, to double and triple on the marketing disadvantage not many people saw the system outside of a Toys R Us (at a time when fewer of their stores existed at greater distances) and to lay the frosting down their tv advertisement was limited to fewer channels....and a bit tad late by the time very few recognized a Turbo, enough to where it became a victim to the hype of the Sega Genesis and the soon to be released mystical "Super Famicom" around the corner from there. Because of the hype of Sega and the upcoming "Super Famicom" through mags most people waited it out for those consoles, namely because a big 2nd wave of younger gamers had just gotten their Nes's for Christmas of 88, 89 and 90 so parents refused to invest in another new system so soon.
I was lucky enough to have seen the TurboGrafx through a tv commercial at my cousin's house, the funny thing was even the commercial gave out the feeling that this was going to be a hardcore niche system tailored for the hardcore. As soon as I saw Ninja Spirit and Bloody Wolf it was over for me, I needed a TurboGrafx asap and ended up bringing my Nes with games to a local gamestore...walked out with the TurboGrafx + Ninja Spirit, Bloody Wolf, Bonk's Adventure, Splatterhouse and of course Keith Courage, I remember it was fall...still remember the orange leaves and the smell of firewood.

Ninja Warriors, on the other hand, was never considered. I never really liked the arcade game, and have no idea what made the game so popular. I was given a copy of the Amiga version, and a japanese copy of the Sega Mega CD version was bundled with my Mega CD 2, and I didn't like either version. The only version I did like, was the SNES semi-remake, which was an amusing pastime....but I wouldn't consider any of the Ninja Warriors games to be among the best that any system has to offer.

It also looks like the games are being played with Overscan and a bit of blur or filter... the picture is a good bit sharper on my actual system. Is this just a TH-cam compression effect?
I went and hooked my console up and flipped back n forth between the inputs for my computer and game console, screen for screen comparing New Adventure Island, and my actual console thru RGB does actually look a bit sharper and more colorful than the TH-cam vid here, but now this is making me want to turn the Sharpness down some as this does look very nice and smooth on here.
EDIT - I have been playing with the Sharpness, Brightness and Color for the past half hour and still cannot get my picture to look as smooth as this even with Sharpness down to 0. There MUST be some sort of light filter being used here... Juganawt, can you confirm this? Would really like to get my picture looking as smooth as this.

    • @Juganawt
      @Juganawt  7 ปีที่แล้ว

No filters, but the system is being run through a HD upscaler and an Elgato HD capture device, so a little bit of colour and sharpness is lost, then TH-cam butchers the bitrate and a LOT of detail is lost (I record at 30mbit and TH-cam outputs it at around 5mbit at 1080p for audio and video combined)
One of these days, I aim to upgrade my current El Cheap-and-Nasty-O upscaler to a FrameMeister, which would make the visuals even more true to the system's native format and remove the output lag (hopefully making me able to show more skilled play in my videos) - Infact that's one of the reasons I decided to start a Patreon campaign, as I've been recording N64 footage and it looks absolutely terrible through my current setup!
      Thanks for watching!

+Juganawt - No problem. lol funny how it seems like the blur from the Chinese Upconverter makes the game look more smooth... maybe my TV settings are sub-par. I am using the Retroconsoleaccessories RGB cable, so I dunno what else I could do to improve the quality. Perhaps I am expecting too much... it is an old pixelated game after all lol.
Are you widening the picture at all? Because the picture looks slightly wider than the standard 4 by 3 ratio. Also looks like theres some Overscan, cutting off a slight bit of the top and bottom of the screen.

+skins4thewin no, I don't widen the picture, I do the opposite! My HD upscaler stretches the screen to 16:9 as default and, using a template, I have to re-adjust the image back to 4:3 using my video editing software, which is time consuming and, again, is another reason why I really need to get myself a FrameMeister I think!
      Maybe one day!

Lol well I certainly hope you get one someday, it is worth every penny! Once you have one you will hate playing without it.
That being said, I don't think it needs half the features it has, I dont use 80% of what it offers. I wish I could sacrifice all of those features for a nice HQ2x or Scale2x filter. That would be Retro gaming heaven!
One thing worth noting is that there is nothing wrong at all with the cheap Ebay scaler, in fact it's quite a good value. No, it doesn't give the absolute best picture quality but it does pretty darned good for as cheap as it is. There really isn't a huge leap in quality from that to the Framemeister.
It does add some screen tearing though and some significant input lag which the Framemeister doesn't have an issue with. The biggest difference I think are the colors. The colors are a good bit more vibrant and detailed with the Framemeister. Picture quality wise though, the difference is only minor in my opinion.

What a good price for a turbo duo on eBay they are like 300 to 700. I missed out on the duo when I was new I wanted it though.

I don't remember many games for the PC Engine. Tales from the Monster Path was one iirc

Yeah, Tales from the Monster Path was considered for the list originally, but when I played it again to record footage, I'd forgotten how unfair and annoying it really was!
      Still kinda fun, though!

Did you use a Framemeister or an OSSC to stream this footage to your Capture Card?

    • @Juganawt
      @Juganawt  4 ปีที่แล้ว

Neither. I used a cheap Chinese thing that I don’t remember the name of but only cost about £40. It then went routed through my Elgato HD capture device and rendered out to Sony Vegas.

@@Juganawt Oh no... don't tell me you're using those cheapo Chinese RGB upscalers.... those things are hot garbage. They don't process 240p signals properly, have all kinds of output artifacts & introduce a TON of input lag. You do own either a Framemeister or OSSC right? With as cheap as the OSSC's are now, you'd be a lot better off getting one of those. It processes signals correctly, has zero input lag and outputs a much nicer looking image.

skins4thewin I thought about getting an OSSC, but I can’t justify the price for the time being. I was interested in the Framemeisters until I saw how they butcher Games that switch resolutions. The Chinese RGB box, while imperfect, is good enough for now, especially as I’ll be needing scalers that can support 8k in the near future so there’s no real point of splashing out over £100 for a couple of months use. The input lag was a bit of a pain and was rather undesirable, especially as the old Elgato HD I was using introduced even more lag. Luckily lag is no longer an issue with the setup I have now (it’s essentially lag free via pass through), so it’s manageable.
While the picture quality isn’t 100% pixel sharp, it produces nice imagery, such as on the PcE and PCECD lists.

@@Juganawt But surely it doesn't upscale if you're simply doing a passthru, and I'm sure the conversion process is also adding lag. Sure, the image from those things is ok, but its still nowhere near what the OSSC can do.
Also, I think youre kind of missing the point. There isn't an upscaler on the market that can do 8k, or even 4k for that matter. That also isn't the point of these devices. The point is to get the resolution to at least 480p so modern displays can handle the image from there, as modern displays simply dont play well with 240p signals.
In fact, if you need a cheap high quality solution then look into the new SCART 2x from Retrotink. It linedoubles RGB signals to 480p via HDMI and has excellent quality output with no added lag at all, and it's under $100 USD. These devices will be useful far longer than just the next couple months. You might want to look a bit more into this stuff.

You did break one of your rules: Super Star Soldier and Final Soldier are same franchise (maybe even Gunhed belongs there).
I really miss some: Galaga 88, Dragon Spirit and Kyukyoky Tiger.

Too bad many of these games didn't come to the US! I had one before the SNES was released and we enjoyed it! Since they weren't available for rent, we missed out on a lot of games because we're $30 (if I remember right) and more so we either got a game for Christmas or birthday. We had Power Golf, Pac-land, Bonks Adventure, World Class Baseball, and Keith Courage in Alpha Zone. My parents got the system when it was down to $125 after we begged them. At that point we were bored with our NES. Now the system and some games are going for a pretty penny!

As someone who lives in the UK, the Turbografx died a miserable death here, and I never owned one until I grabbed myself a PC-Engine Duo-R nearly 2 decades after they were first launched. It's quite frankly an amazingly powerful machine considering the date when it was first released. I'd have loved to owned a PCE as a kid!
