  • April 1st is a day filled with jokes and pranks all over the world. In this video I dive into the best...and the worst...April Fool's jokes in Sweden.
No one knows exactly why we started pulling pranks on April 1st, but the tradition dates back hundreds of years. Some believe that it has its origins in 1583, and others point out that the French poet Eloy d'Amerval mentioned poisson d'avril way back in 1508. Others believe that Chaucer made a reference to April Fool's way back in 1392, in the Canterbury Tales. Regardless of the reason, it's a wonderul tradition - and I wanted to take a look at some of the most ridiculous and awesome pranks that have been pulled in Sweden.
Jokes mentioned in this video include:
    - A 2016 Carlsberg commercial for an instant beer pill - something many wished was true
    - The 2012 article from Dagens Industri, that Apple were buying the island Ios from Greece for 20 billion American dollars
    - The Poseidon statue in Gothenburg was supposed to get an enargement of certain male parts in 2011
    - In 2010, a man was supposedly the father of four newborns on the same day...with four different women
    - A telephone pole grower lamented his declining profession in 1988
    - TV remotes could unlock locked cars in 1989
    - In 1987 we learned that we could grow vegetables in the microwave oven
    - Parts of Stockholm were completely closed off by environmental activists in 1979
    - Daylight savings time came early in 1980, causing chaos
    - Stockholm was supposed to get 600 elephants for the opening of the olympics in 1911
    - Amazing! 300 year old ale and bread and cheese was found in 1961 when the Vasa was salvaged
    - Did you know that a nylon stocking or pantyhose could be used to create a color TV? We learned that in 1962
    - Washing dishes with ultrasound? In 1964 that was possible
    - Make your own satellite dish with just an umbrella and aluminum foil
    - 2020 and 2019 saw some really bad jokes...
    - And many others!
And if this isn't enough I also bring up the TH-cam April Fool's prank from 2013, where they said that all of TH-cam had been a huge competition - and now it was time to judge all the entries to determine the winner. Which video did you think won?

In 1961 Finnish students conducted a prank related to the Vasa ship, when they smuggled a small statue of Paavo Nurmi on the deck just before the ship was salvaged. But this was in Valborg, not April fools day.

I always liked the student prank in my home city of Lund, many years ago: They put out flyers urging people to protest against the city council spreading the chemical dihydrogen monoxide, even in children's playgrounds! Yep, there were a lot of the protest-against-everything bunch even then! 😁

I love that! It kills tons of children every year - let's ban it altoghether :D I wonder how many sign-ups they actually got...

@@ThreeStarVagabond I don't know, this was around 1980 so the details are not clear or easy to find, but I know that they got quite a lot of signatures - it was what they said on TV at least!

This was very fun! I'm curious, are you planning on doing any videos about Linköping? I'm super-curious about learning more about that city but feel like there aren't a lot of videos about like, the cities history or architecture for a pretty big city! 👀 If you're headed there sometime I think it'd be an interesting topic for a video!

Thank you! :D And that's actually a really good idea! I think I'll wait until it's a bit warmer, but I'll definitely make a video about Linköping in a couple of months - and since I used to live there for 10 years it'll be really fun to look at it from a new perspective :D

That was fun. What's April Fool in Swedish? I remember seeing that spaghetti tree prank featured on the BBC when I was a kid, but that was in the sixties. I didn't realise it was a 1957 prank, that was the year I was born. I was gullible enough to believe the story when they showed it in later years, I still remember thinking how amazing it was. 🤣

    • @ThreeStarVagabond
      @ThreeStarVagabond  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Aren't those the best pranks - when you think that "this is so cool, I HOPE that this is true" :D In Swedish we just call the day April 1st, but the jokes are called "aprilskämt" (April jokes). It's really common to have lots of pretty bad ones all over the place.. I don't think I got fooled this year at least!

@@ThreeStarVagabond A lot of people fell for that one back in the day since foreign food wasn't yet popular. I remember all the old British codgers lamenting that they would never eat that foreign muck. My mother was Dutch so I was already used to "foreign muck", but Italian was still a bit exotic.

@@DikWhite It's so weird to imagine that it wasn't THAT long ago. These days everyone eats Eritrean food and whatnot, and everyone is up to speed on political events all over the world. Everything is so global!
