For god sake, what a mess you guys have to deal with. Someone needs a 6 pack or pints. All these buried junction boxes and stupid rings. I am so glad we don't have rings in the US. In theory no hidden junction boxes are allowed as well in the US although the do happen from time to time. Also so lucky for wooden wall construction, so much simpler than having to deal with the brick and cutting out races. Hats off to you guys.
Good advert for the end of ring circuits. Fine when first put in but over time it turns into a mess then whole thing needs redone. Just run 4mm radical for kitchen sockets instead and put appliances on there own circuits.
The wiring in that kitchen was a complete mess, glad you managed to sort it.

In most cases for a new kitchen, I just allow to rewire the kitchen. You never know what you’re gonna find and you need that 32amp ring in a kitchen more than any other room in the house. By the time you’ve found the issues, you may as well just start again.
Dodgy, it's usually a case in call outs, be it systems, electrical work or breakdowns on machines, being a detective and workout what someone else has done, being in industry and academia is rare, as its well audited and has a paper trail, imagine a multi million pound /dollar system with this level of cowboy electrician and Engineer work,
So crazy the work you guys have to go through to run wiring and chase everything. Makes me feel like I have it easy fishing drywall/stick frame here in Canada

Nick - quick question for a novice spark but how do you secure your capping - do you use raw plug or a particular type of screw like wall dogs? Great videos by the way - very real - I am dealing with the same problem in a kitchen ring that is reading open circuit in the line cables - just got to convince the client that I need to cut holes in her ceiling to check all the junction boxes I found hidden in the void!!

Not all were recalled. You need to check the serial numbers.

A prime example why only electricians should do electrical work in the kitchen, there is no way a kitchen fitted would have found that, another job where you had no favours, leaving the kitchen in 🙄
Agreed, such a pain trying to work round fitted units and appliances.
I always get a plan of the kitchen drawn with dimensions. Much easier to set out as discuss with clients. I will even autocad all my own drawings and do proper dimensioned drawings. Then draw up electrical layout on that
Typical shit wiring in a kitchen, I think 90% of kitchens we work on are in that state before we start. We tend to not bother trying to salvage anything and run it all in new where possible. Am in the habit of running 2 radials for a kitchen, with grid switches for appliances.
I find it easier to run switched feeds to the top of the wall units for under cabinet lights and either somehow leave a draw wire for the ELV stuff or if your organised enough get the under cabinet lights on site for the first fix stage and run them in so the transformer or driver ends up on top of the cabinet rather than on the underside. Looks neater and is easier to work on in the future. We normally fit LED tape so we’d first fix the ELV cable that goes between the driver and the tape.

keitho77 just normal wood bit that’s fucked so I angle grind big teeth in it to cut plaster bit easier and keeps costs down, 🖐🖐🖐🖐

I don’t entertain any existing wiring any more (for the most part) unless it’s looks like I done it. I always Install new as a default.

better use 80 mm holesaw to cut the holes or go by the size of your palm . easy to patch it after
in the US there is no way they allow hidden junction boxes in the wall without an access panel, nor are you allowed to run wires behind a piece of plastic covered with plaster... those would have to be run between studs or covered in metal conduit, and run outside of the wall, the UK plugs are great and I wish we had them here in the US.

Kitchen fitters can do horrible things to a previously well installed kitchen circuit.
allow 900mm worktop height plus 150mm to the bottom of the box, based on if they have granite or other upstand you will clear it, a 150mm tile fits neatly underneath, it is one and a half 100mm tiles so you don't get a messy bit underneath or above the box, if they have tiles the size of paving slabs it goes in the middle of the tile anyway!

Ring or 4mm 32A radial. With only 20A that is only 2 heavy appliances that can be on together.
Andy Kirwan the only heavy appliances that would be on would be micro wave and kettle as washer and dryer are in utility and cooker has its own 6 mm but I get your point 👍

Disclaimer I am not an electrician, but I notice the wiring seems to have a lot of vertical runs (pain for fitting cupboards), why not bring those down in the corners as well. Also wiring seems to change direction from horizontal to vertical without entering a backing box at some points, does that meet regs? I am never quite sure....

Only place I dont use a radial is a kitchen too many loads for a 16 even a 20 amp circuit.
Ring always for a kitchen then radials everywhere else.
worked in australia for 6 years doing new builds. Never had a problem with overloading a 16a breaker on a radial for a kitchen.
4mm 32A radial???
I rarely find that 32A rings are necessary. Most kitchens are fine with 20A, especially if there's a separate circuit for the utility room. I left a datalogger running for two weeks at a recent kitchen installation and it only occasionally went slightly over 20A for a couple of minutes. If you do a load assessment of your own kitchen and apply diversity you'll probably get a similar result confirming that 20A is fine. Good design requires that you assess loads for each installation and consider all the available options rather than having a rule that you stick to regardless.

Just a quick one regarding switches I was told on the grapevine newer installations require or a good to have naturals at the switches as future proof for dimmers ect. Is this true? (From an older industrial focused electrical apprentice)
You don't need a neutral for switching purposes , including dimmers
It’s becoming a newer thing to do, helps with smart switches

Hi Nick, sorry to be picky with your work, but I would never use the wall corner join in a kitchen, as a future precaution, as most kitchen fitter would be drilling/fixture fitting in corner for cabinets, better using ceiling/wall zone then drop down to accessories

The 850 is good for tiling. But is that enough for chasings? Or it will burn down? And also can i do chasings with a rotary hammer? Or i should just get a 50 usd grinder?

I would have put in a separate radial for the dishwasher, to give more generous capacity, or alternatively, installed one 32A radial, in 4mm sq. t&e.

When a piece of rock is stuck inside my boot but I'm so freaking busy and don't have a stupid second to take it off and get it out, and I, eventually take it off and get rid of it after I'm done with everything always makes me laugh.
PS: And the fact that I try to move it around my foot inside the boot so that it doesn't hurt me while I'm busy to simply remove it is hilarious, hahahahaha.

When installing some USB sockets they do say not too test the insulation resistance because they can interfere and in some cases cause issues

How many sockets do you usally say on a radial. is it a 20amp radial I always makes me think it's going to trip especially in a kitchen how many appliances would you say is ok off a radial

greg davies as long as the cooker has its own supply being either a 6mm for higher rated ovens for its own 2.5mm radial if it’s over 2.6 kW then I find kettle micro and toaster fine to run on its own radial, but when u have a washer dryer and dish washer on to that much better running a ring 👍

Why is there no main isolator on that consumer unit?
David Masson looked like an rcd being used as main switch. Not uncommon back in the day in a TT system.

Hi nick. Good to see how people do things differently that’s why I watch these videos for ideas and different products ppl use in different areas. I use Makita chaser and dust extract works amazing had it for years so much easier and I always use oval rather than capping I can’t see the point in chasing a 50mm wide chase when you can do one line with the chaser and put in 25mm oval much better job to look at in my opinion.
I also don’t chase across the wall at all I would have gone in the ceiling void and straight down to the hood supply.

On your video at 14:30 you said a double socket under sink for dishwasher.... my sparky told me my kitchen failed because their was not an isolator switch above the kitchen surface to isolate the undercounter dishwasher. Wondered what your thoughts were. It is amazing the thought process of some people that think burrying junction boxes is acceptable. Look forward to hearing from you. Regards Don Codman
Hey don, to my knowledge a socket located in a cupboard ie socket fixed inside a kitchen cab not behind it, as long as it’s accessible it’s fine, it’s when there is a socket behind an appliance and it’s inaccessible so you would need a spur on work top to isolate it

Hood isolation circuit, gies from FCU up then right angle to unswitched socket. Isn't that outside the permitted zones?
No bud, the permitted zone from the fused switch is straight up and zone for the socket is up, down left and right level with the socket
