Curious what resources you’d suggest for a greenhorn looking to get into AWBW Played through the original games, so I understand the units and whatnot, but don’t understand all of the little metagame mechanics. Especially the first turn advantage and how a single infantry seems magically to balance that out (would seem to me that starting with the exactly same layout wouldn’t be a handicap for 2nd player, but as it currently stands nobody would want to go first, like essentially every card game)
There are plenty of ways to work on the theory. A lot of good if not top players are also content creators (Mangs, Deejus, Go7, Humita, etc etc). I think Go7 is good for beginners as he covers a lot of beginners' game and his style is very "teacher" like. He regularly explains and repeats the basic mechanics as he review games (such as the FTA). You also have a discord and a wiki to exchange and read. Then you need a lot of practice of course. Regarding FTA. The starting infantry is really important for a balanced game, otherwise player 1 starts with a tempo advantage on every front. Imagine you and your opponent try to reach the same objectives that are right in the middle of your bases. Player 1 will always reach the objective before you. So, we give 1 infantry to player 2 on half the bases, to allow them to have that tempo advantage on half the fronts. Another way to think about it: what is the first thing you do on your first turn? Build infantries on all your bases and pass. Without the FTA counter infrantry, player 2 starts a whole turn behind on all bases. If we give them an infantry on half the bases, they now start only half a turn behind. FTA is a bit more complex than that, because you also have to consider that player 1 gets income first, and the rate at which each player get income is never perfectly mirrored. So, we also make sure that whoever can buy the first tank of the game cannot buy the third tank (assuming both players are doing their best to get money and buy tanks without base skipping as quickly as possible). It has to follow a ABBA pattern.

Guess my confusion comes in because there isnt much advantage in the first player tempo unless they can make it to a property before the other player (and most maps are built with the infantry turn count heavily considered). Because the way I see it, there is no benefit to standing there and taking the first attack to the face. Wouldn’t 2nd player always be at the advantage because they can react and get the majority of the first strike bonuses? (Obviously ignoring CO Powers that change attack order like Sonya)

Hate to say this but the first two matches are really bad: Starflash seemed to have no plan other than "I want to do damage", and Po1and was way too overconfident, there was no logical reason for them not to build AA as soon as they spotted that first Copter plus he had partial vision of the centre and saw it open, should've sent one or two infantry to at least force the opponent to divert forces but nope. Hopefully the final match will be more interesting cause first two were already decided by half the match

Since Advance Wars is a turned based game, the player who goes first has an initiative advantage, akin to playing white in Chess (which has a statistically higher win % rate than black). FTA means giving P2 a small bonus to ensure the win rate is as close to 50% as possible. Many games do this in different ways. In Hearthstone, Player 2 gets an additional card + the coin for example. In Advance Wars, FTA is usually solved by giving the second player an additional starting infantry.
That's honestly not super difficult. Sure, you might miss out on a good rating, but it is certainly archievable. This game feels like it is designed around playing deathless.
Have to admit... your constant fiddling with the music is quite annoying. Please, please, please make a playlist or something and just let it run. As for the volume, a bit on the high side, but I guess it's too late for that 😜
My goodness Mangs, I know you consider Deejus as your friend but the way it comes through in your commentary that you would like Deejus to win and see everything from his perspective was way too much and unpleasant to hear in the final. Understand you like to see Deejus winning, but the commentary was just really one-sided. Great stream though and great tournament!
