Always good times playing in that heavy PNW snow! Sandbags, sandbags, sandbags and clear a 4 foot "runway" for each of your wheels when you get bogged in. Use that parking brake or "pulsing" if you don't have a rear locker, it helps simulate traction control and add resistance and increase torque to both rear wheels. Have fun fellas.
It was fun watching these guys learning how to drive :) "Tell me about your suspension, wheels, fenders, bumpers, lights, rack, gear... gnarly dude." Not a word mentioning the engine.
A. R their biggest issue is they attached the pull rope to the passenger side so it’s not snatching the front end over its pulling it right back into the ditch
Cool snow trip. It's been a while since I've had enough friends with trucks to do a run like that. Back in the early 90's nobody ran winches (couldn't afford them), and MaxTrax wasn't even a thing. We just slapped tire chains on our Swampers, or Buckshot tires and made it pretty much anywhere our bumpers would clear in that sticky PNW snow. And this was with 1980-1985 carb'd four banger, four-speed manual Toyotas, 33" tires, with stock gears. Now we have to put so much stuff on these newer Tacomas just to be able to make it through the same snow.
Can't be sure from the video, but it looked like the winch pulley setup that was used (attached to a tree) was in a fixed pulley configuration, which doesn't actually double the pulling force. A single pulley on a tree saver just changes the pull direction of the winch vehicle. As far as I know, to double pulling force you need to connect a pulley/snatch block to the stuck vehicle, in a moveable pulley configuration. At least that's how I use them...
Love the vid, guys...As a Wrangler/Power Wagon guy, I still love the Tacoma...At 6'4", I simply don't fit comfortably in the vehicle, but I love those trucks...Enjoy them men.
Enjoyed the video! Not sure why so many commenters are knocking these guys, they are all young men having a good time and not causing trouble...with age and time come experience that they will be acquiring, this from an old dude who's been there and done that. Nicely done gents...
Most people are just keyboard warriors and learn their experience from reading these comments on videos and then become experts. Everyone learns some where and some how! And this snow in our PNW is wet and dense and hard to manage some times. Gotta love watching it all!
After just having bought a TRD Off Road... I sure hope I don't have these problems. My jeep commander would have handled this no problem. I got it stuck a total of one time, ever... on top of packed snow. Dug out underneath it so the tires would bite and kept going. I figure a lot of it was the snow tires, had some NOKIAN HAKKAPELIITTAs on it.
Ditto. My Jeep Commander (stock besides going to a 245/70r17) only ever got stuck on hard packed snow and a shovel fixed that issue. I wasn't even running snow tires just aggressive all seasons or AT tires.
You guys seem like a pretty laid-back crew. One suggestion is simply to dig more especially in the beginning that Tacoma had too much snow plowed in front of it you shouldn't be trying to snatch a stuck up and over the obstacle, try and make it flat or even dig deeper and give it a little down run. More work I know but usually one and done and less wear and tear on the vehicles.
This is why videos are nice, because you can see all this adventure but not have to worry about the risks yourself (I definitely couldn't handle feeling like you're going to go over a cliff at any moment.. 👀)
Don't know about you, but I have chains for ALL my tires. When the chains are on it is a tank. I guess they can't think of old basic. Oh, CHAINS, not cables. I was born and raised there in Skagit County and been all over those hills.

markus ford Running a winch line from one truck thru an anchored pulley and attaching it to another object is a 1:1 system. Aka change of direction. 1lb pulls 1lb. Had they put the snatch block on the stuck tacoma and ran it back to a tow hook on the winching truck....that would then be a 2:1 pulley system......Now when I originally wrote that comment they left out the fact that you have to run it back to the truck but these losers edited the video to say it correctly but their footage clearly shows they run it as a 1:1.
Phil Charleston show me at what point they used it for mechanical advantage and not a change of direction. I’m a rope rescue tech, I think I know how pulley systems work.

people who think that they would walk right through this snow with their truck may not realize that the snow in the PNW is much heavier and wetter than non-coastal areas. My outback could run through snow like that in Colorado off the 24. in western washington the snow is called cement, it weighs a ton, is slick and driving through it is not easy. If you have had to break trail skinning up in western washington vs some place like central BC you will know what I mean.

It's the easiest to wheel in.
It doesn't make the winch magically pull twice as much. It spreads the load between the rope twice, making the tension on the rope half as much.
It does. It work's like a gear reduction - twice the force, half the speed. It's called a block and tackle or snatch block for winching specifically.
That blue one drives by my job site. I always wonder if it goes off-road much.

Your snatch block anchored to the tree is nothing more than a change of direction pulley. Not a force multiplier.
Yes actually a snatch block is a force multiplier... The speed at which the winch moves you is cut in half. Should probably remove your comment.
