The Storm - Prelude to The Twisted Ones (Five Nights at Freddy's Animation)

  • I'm so glad it's finally finished! I'd venture to say this is my most ambitious animation I've made so far, and despite the fact that it's only two minutes long, it still consumed about two months of time working on it. This is one of those ideas that I've had in my head for quite a long time, since I first read the book in fact, I've just never been confident enough that I could successfully pull it off. The modeling of the environments I did almost entirely on my own, except for the models of the tree trunks, which came from polligon.com. The textures are also mostly Polligon textures.
    I had to learn several new useful aspects of CGI for this one, like animated trees, dirt, and rain. I'm particularly proud of the droplet in the puddle at the very beginning, that was all animated by eye and I think it looks nicely realistic for a first attempt. I'm not quite as happy with the trees and the dirt, but hey, they're first attempts as well.
    The sound effects in this video include my standard set of Twisted Ones noises (running shower, bicycle wheel, mattress, doorknob, cabinet drawers opening and closing) but this time with the new addition of a pitch-shifted window sliding open to be Foxy's servos straining when it's trying to sit upright.
    Find the Unigoat.

    Music in this video: th-cam.com/video/u_3xh-SGL-4/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=TheNickofTime
    *Context for those who have not read the book:* In The Twisted Ones, the first thing we see of the titular creatures is the place they escaped from: An empty concrete room in a vacant house, with no windows and no exits, concealed under the surface of the bare dirt floor. We only see this place when our characters come across it some time after they've already left, through a breach in the wall caused by storm damage. They also find Foxy, still trapped halfway in the dirt, implying that the others got up and left without it.
    This isn't a recreation of any particular existing scene, since we never see them leaving the house. It's just my own interpretation of what we can deduce must have happened. If it were in the book, this event would fall at the very beginning before any of the main plot starts, perhaps as a kind of cold opening.

    Really enjoy the slowness of their movements, gives the feeling of a highly machined creature opposed to to jerkyness of regular endoskeletons.
    The smoothness is what I've always imagined the funtime's movement to be like, driven by contracting lengths of coil rather than pistons and servos.

      The funtimes I think had both the somehow moving coils and the normal pistons, motors and servos. On larger joints the bigger machinery would provide the strength to move the attached pieces quickly and powerfully, particularly including all the metal those things were built from, and on smaller joints and supplementing the larger machinery you have the coils making movements more fine. Though if the coils were part of the design or actually just a side effect of the possession allowing parts that shouldn't have been able to move to move, I do not know.

    @st6387 2 ปีที่แล้ว +121

    I really love the emotion, or rather the lack of emotion, that is displayed in this animation. Each movement seems calculated and with intention, even simply standing still seems to be more of figuring out where to go, rather than taking in surroundings. The lack of intelligence, as well, mainly when Bonnie seems to be trying to do something with the wall despite an obvious opening being in the room. Even Foxy watching them and seemingly reaching out for help seems incredibly emotionless, a lot less driven by fear or anger. It really shows you that these things are not haunted suits, they are machines, with relatively simple programming and a goal to achieve. Absolutely beautiful work.

    • @TheNickofTime
      @TheNickofTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +47

      Ah, I'm glad you noticed Bonnie derping out with that wall, I think that's my personal favorite movement of any of them makes in this clip, for just the reasons you said. I was really trying to ram home a sense of something I've seen described elsewhere in this comments section as 'unalive'.
      I also try to enhance that effect by leaving the eyes alone for the most part (as opposed to animating them looking around), and by having the arms swing around loosely at their sides whenever they're not being used.

    Now, my previous critiques of these models still stand - there are internals within them (wiring, movement mechanisms, and the main springlock and similar contraptions which were within the chest and arms, among other bits), primarily. But still, this is amazing. One of my favorite things about this is that it truly shows the scale of these monstrous creations, being taller than a full floor of the house. Love the detail that, while the main storm has passed, the remaining rain continues. The rain actually landing on them as well is great.

    • @TheNickofTime
      @TheNickofTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +203

      Ah, I appreciate the criticism! The lack of springlocks and wiring is a completely valid gripe to have, but I would just like to quickly explain the thought process behind that, because I didn't forget about them. It was a deliberate choice to omit those things, because I wanted 'no cheating' in these models: meaning that I didn't put anything in them that I couldn't ground in reality.
      The mechanical stuff Is sound enough (no impossible joints, no requiring horrendous clipping to move, that kind of thing), but I don't know enough about electronics to make educated wire placements, and the springlocks and power source are a whole other can of worms. So if I did put in placeholders that didn't actually make sense, then these models would become tainted by what I consider 'cheating', and that would irk me far more. As they are now, I've figured out these designs to the extent that you see, with no bluffing to make them look any more feasible than they really are.

    • @ultmateragnarok8376
      @ultmateragnarok8376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +102

      That's a way to look at it that I hadn't considered. It does add somewhat to their creepiness that they just... don't seem to _have_ all that stuff that they should when it comes to power and control and whatnot, so it works out well enough. As for the springlocks, those mechanisms are loosely described in the most basic conceptual way, rather than in detail, so while a basic springlock piece might be doable the rest of it is essentially up to interpretation. I appreciate the thought you put into that, it's quite nice to see people going through that much effort for such a creation.

However, these models are amazing.

      @@TheNickofTime While I’m not the OP here, I’d say it’s because the dirt balls/gravel glided off their bodies like orbeez in water instead of like dirt in open air.
      Dirt, even light dirt, will have some weight to it and want to settle in the center of a even a smooth surface just a little bit before it falls away.
      The shape of the particles are also large, so it doesn’t look like dust or sand that would essentially pour away after being pushed off the surface of the animatronics by the force of gravity. Thicker dirt, even dry, will be a bit sticky and try to clump together and sticking to the surface of a smooth object, even if only in tiny bits. Also, the rain in the scene could wash away the remaining dirt particles if you want your robots to look clean towards the end.
      If you want a reference, I’d find some objects with material that matches how you’d expect the animatronics to feel like and/or somewhat mimics the shapes, bury them in the type of dirt you were imagining, then close up film what it looks like when you pull it out of and/or push them through the dirt. You’ll see where dirt will tend to settle and how much it might cling to the surface of the object after it emerges.

    • @TheNickofTime
      @TheNickofTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +35

      @@evastickler3298 This is incredibly helpful advice. Unfortunately, the oversized particles of dirt is a sacrifice I was forced to make because my computer isn't the best, and it can only handle so many active objects in a single simulation before it starts crashing. But the slight stickiness and tendency to form clumps is definitely something I could strive for in the future, provided I can figure out how to do that (this is my very first venture into physics simulations, so I'm something of a novice to the whole thing).

    • @evastickler3298
      @evastickler3298 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      @@TheNickofTime Ahhhh the objects. Yeah trying to render every tiny speck of something can be a computer crasher for sure. While I have no experience with making this sort of art personally, I think perhaps you can do a combination of a few things to lessen the number of objects but maintain some fluidity? With something like sand or very fine powdery substances, you might be able to do a combination with something like a textured fluid and throwing in a few small grains here and there depending on the shot. Perfectly dry gravel will act pretty similar to what you have already done in this video, with the exception of maybe being a bit heavier and/or smaller. Though with this dirt, it looks like you were going for something like a loamy soil? You can probably make a small variety of different shapes and sizes to mix together and, if you’re able, vary the “stickiness” of it? Some small particles will roll away, some of them will want to stick to the animatronics. Larger pieces that have formed into balls might roll away, but other, less rounded pieces may want to stick more to the animatronic and to smaller particles. These properties will also depend on what material you imagine the animatronics are based off of and how you imagine the state and contents of the soil. Wet/damp thicker varieties of dirt will want to stick more than dry dirt due to the physical properties of water making it act like a paste. This is how some people can make mud and clay bricks. Other times, tiny particles of dirt will want to cling to something, even a mostly smooth surface like plastic, due to some static attraction and/or clinging to the unavoidable tiny defects in the material. Maybe you could mix the textured fluid and individual particles depending on the perspective of the shot and intended soil consistency/content? Of course, all in all, ultimately this is just a minor thing. It’s literally just moving dirt. I don’t think soil scientists will break down your door to shame you for not making the way dirt/sand/gravel falls away with photorealistic perfection. It’s just a little detail to work on in close-ups if you want to maintain the illusion of reality just a teensy bit more. The further the shot, of course, these itty bitty details don’t matter as much.
      Also! You’re a novice? With this level of skill? If you’re this amazing as a novice, your future is practically limitless! It’ll be so awesome to see your growth as you learn and practice more and more. Just don’t overdo it okay? Blocks happen, breaks are healthy, progress isn’t linear, and interests change and you may leave this for something else and come back to it later. Try not to let the praise and pressure from strangers online get to your head. Take care of yourself and your skills will come out naturally over time.

The initial hand coming out alongside the start up of that familiar music brought me skyrocketing back to the fear I feel looking at these things, the shot of multiple hands all coming up at once was so eerie, seeing Freddy and Bonnie’s not-quite-human grins again rising out of the dirt was so uncomfortable, the shot of Bonnie coming out behind Freddy, showing off how gargantuan these machines are, sent a chill down my spine and put a pit in my stomach. This scene isn’t in twisted ones but it single-handedly convinced me that this would make an amazing opening to a TTO movie. Spectacular job, you’re an inspiration to us all!!

It would certainly make for a great series.

      Thank you, especially for noticing the lighting. That was the driving force behind this whole animation, the first element that popped into my mind when making it. And the Freddy ducking down bit was also satisfying to animate: I was worried I'd have to make the stoop go ridiculously far down to compensate for the height of the hat, but it didn't end up looking all that bad in the end.

      @TheNickofTime  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Ah, I know just what you mean. I’ve been pondering why it looks that way, and I’ve come to the conclusion that I had the friction settings far too low. And, the clumps of dirt are much bigger than they should be, but that’s just because my computer can only handle a certain amount at once before Blender becomes unusable.

    • @pbx4613
      @pbx4613 2 ปีที่แล้ว
