Correction: Prince Albert died in 1861.
The romance between Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert is one of the greatest love stories in history. After a long history of arranged and often miserable marriages this couple found solace and comfort in each other and prioritized their happy family and domestic bliss even over the power of the British Empire.

Victoria didn't specifically hate her children. She hated children in general, she thought babies were ugly, she thought breastfeeding was disgusting and absolutely hated being pregnant. The pretty intense love(bordering on worship) she had for Albert was really the sole reason as to why she had 9 children. She did love her children later although she could be very controlling over their lives.

Victoria never loved anyone as much as Albert - including her own children. I think she definitely had some attachment issues and aversion to motherhood in response her own upbringing. Albert on the other hand was a strict father, but very loving. As Prince Consort to a ruling Queen, I don't think he would've had much legal room to contradict his wife, even if they did argue sometimes, but he did try to educate all his children well and make them feel loved.

Yes I think the clincher was that her children used to jokingly refer to him as "Mama's lover." If they actually HAD been lovers, it would have been no joke. I think Victoria just missed having someone to take care of her and run the household the way Albert had - she wrote in her journal "how comforting it is to have a man about the house." She also relished the way Brown treated her quite like an ordinary person. Somewhat at odds with her position as Queen, informality and egalitarianism was a value Victoria held in high regard..

From what I've read, Victoria also helped lead diplomacy attempts with France (some old guard Brits were NOT happy about it). Took her 15 or so years, she made progress with King Louis Phillipe, only to have to start from scratch when he was overthrown in 1848. Finally she and Albert formed a working relationship with Emperor Napoleon III, and by the 1860s she had pretty much succeeded in ending the 800 year old feud (although some rivalry continued for a while).

Her childhood really seemed to shape the way she loved. It’s like her mother and the Kensington System taught her love was a non renewable resource and therefore only based in expectation. You can even see it in some of her interactions with her children, like she was paranoid that Albert’s love for them would mean less love for her, as if that’s how it worked at all.
It’s no small wonder why losing Albert, who had seemed to her a source of complete, unending and unconditional love was such a shock to her system.

Something to remember is that Princess Victoria was under constant danger of being murdered because of her position in line for the throne. Her mother was protecting her daughter, possibly over protecting her, yet, her mother loved her enough to go to such extremes.
Queen Victoria & Prince Albert were cousins, yes, however, even commoners (non-royals) married their cousins. It was acceptable at the time. Some things that people do, in 2021, would be considered vulgar indeed sometimes criminal at the time of Victoria & Alberts era.
There were fewer people on the earth, farther apart, travel was expensive. Meeting someone outside of family members such as cousins, aunts & uncles was more unfeasible than it is, now.

That and being two virgins who actually wanted to have sex with eachother and were in the very narrow situation in society where having that much sex was socially exept able (because they were married and all that) for them, they kinda hit the jackpot of realistic sex lives for themselves

It's interesting how Albert considering his childhood, abandoned by his mother and being distant from his father, managed to become a pretty stable and intelligent individual. Not only did he have a a bright vision for England, but he seemed to be a pretty resilient person - Victoria loved him deeply and he was the only one who could understand and handle her tantrums. He was also known to be a strict but loving father, in general all of his kids adored him. I even read somewhere that Victoria admired Albert's calm demeanour and his view towards children, because she herself could never relate to it. I understand why England is proud of Prince Albert, he seemed to be a very smart and gathered individual.

Despite the fact that Albert’s mother left their household when he was young, if it affected him, he doesn’t appear to have ever shown it through his behaviour. Not as an adult anyway. I don’t want to judge his mother for what she did. Maybe she gave him a lot of love before she left, and maybe he knew she loved him even if they weren’t living together.

Princess Louise, Albert's mother, left because she could no longer bear the humiliation of Prince Ernst's constant stream of mistresses that he didn't even bother to hide from her. Unfortunately Ernst then refused to let her see her two sons, much to her distress, showing that using the kids as weapons in a nasty separation isn't just restricted to the 21st century. It was partly because Albert saw how much distress his father's loose morals caused his mother, that he became such a paragon of virtue and uprightness himself.

Franz Joseph was the leader of a majority Catholic empire, so it probably wouldn't have been permitted. He did end up with Sissi though, so that was another of the sadly rare cases where a royal marriage was actually intimate to some extent.

I reckon it’s a mix of both. They probably shared features because of all the incest, but the look of a “ matching royal pair.” Was also appealing to the public.

I’m pretty sure this practice was common back in the day, especially among nobility. That’s why nobody every questioned it because they didn’t know it would create issues. It’s only because our morals changed today.

For those wondering, at Albert's deathbed only Vicky, Affie, Leopold and Beatrice were absent. The first three were travelling and Beatrice (who was only four at the time) had been put to bed earlier.
Bertie joined his siblings last-minute, after having earned his parents' forgiveness in Albert's final hours.
