    Recently discovered this great, highly informative channel. I have viewed several of Edith's productions and she is so world-class, and no doubt has a terrific future! I am an old white man from Texas, who has six African American god-children I helped raise. One is gay, one is lesbian, and both came out to us when in teens. My gay son wrote me a beautiful letter when I turned 70, thanking me for being accepting when he came out, and telling him he was perfect just the way he was. He is now doing well in real estate sales in LA, and my lesbian daughter is an attorney (barrister). Here in the US we continue to struggle with this topic, and the grip of the so-called conservative "Christians" is powerful because it is all about money and controlling culture. Some of these same "evangelist" ("evilgelicals" as I say) also have strongly influenced politics in countries like Uganda, on this topic and anti-LGBTQ laws. So much of Africa is still mentally saddled with Eurocentric ideas of morality that have long become outdated in the West, but obviously this is changing due to the yearning of the younger generations and their becoming both more Afrocentric and global. Is is sad to still see so much ignorance and hypocrisy, however. Many gays hide in the churches and and I am sure even some of the "pastors" (and Imams) are gay behind closed doors. It's all about "appearances." Like one of the lesbians in this panel discussion said, more or less, is that homosexuality has existed since time immemorial. It is as natural as our faces. It wasn't until Euros came to enslave and control Africans and impose the notion of "sin" (a false concept) that Africans lost touch with the "gayness" within their cultures. There is ample research on this, and publications on the web if one searches. Being gay is about the creative, the arts, music, and the spiritual. As Malidoma Some of the Dagara tribe teaches, gays in his community were the "gatekeepers" to the spirit world and facilitated the rites of initiation for boys (maybe girls also, idk). So much sexuality that was practiced within African cultures was deemed evil and sinful by the white tricksters. Not just gay, but anything to do with sex that was not "procreative" within a marriage. I hope Africa can evolve more quickly than we did in the USA and West. To suppress LGBTQ is like cutting off the nose to spite the face. Gays are the source of creative change and invention for a society, and by oppressing them the governments and churches do so only to maintain control, and by doing so are constricting the positive growth of their cultures in all ways.

    This whole conversation is just a touch of many things.I have nothing against lgbtq people. I have a problem that the only way to identify themselves is mentioning their sexual preferences or whatever they call it.Again why is it wrong if someone told them to dress in a particular way while going to particular places.Not only in church there are many places where we have to dress in a certain dress code and it applies to all nothing to do with their sexuality.
    Kindly explain to me what rights they want except marriage?I worked in a kenya company where we had more than 6 gays that were known .By the way, they were so good that they got promotions all the time.
    In kenya, whether you are straight or not, a public display of affection will always make people stare and uncomfortable. So when lgbtq people do that in public and the crowd reacts they tbink its coz of who they are but thats not true.When they go for demonstration and get arrested thats happens to anyone who tries to push boundaries in kenya...may it be a doctor fighting for his rights or another politician who rubs government the wrong way.About the chiloba guy who they claim was a hate crime thats FALSE.HE WAS KILLED BY HIS PARTNER OUT OF JEALOUSY BECAUSE HE WAS CHEATING.
    Let's not be victims. Most people have no hate for lgbtq but rather find it hard to accept just because it's a been unspoken for a long time.change is hard.

    Legislation will not cure homosexuality. This is an issue that should not be treated as a criminal offence, but rather a product of failure in parenting and ancestral curses due to idolatry and witchcraft. With this said, there is hope for salvation through Jesus Christ.

Bit people be out here JUDGING others left right & centre & they may be hateful, angry, vengeful etc. Nobody can speak for the God in the Bible. According to that book u CANNOT BEGIN to understand him. Nikjjaribu tu. Shida ni kujifanya mabingwa! How do u read someone's heart? I say she's mature in her faith & that is rare in this day & age. One thing about Kenya even with these pseudo-conservative politicians and citizens is that LGBTQIA community is somewhat free than all other E.A. countries. They're on social-media, they're on the streets, in the clubs and in very few instances are they persecuted. They're suppressed constitutionally which is the problem they're trying to address. This LGBTQIA issue isn't a simple one, not even for us who're straight and liberal minded. I personally would like to understand whether it's can be scientifically proven(I haven't done my research) or is it a form of traumatic response maybe because of sexual abuse or other unknown factors. It's a very very complicated topic.

    • @mwaurangere4331
      @mwaurangere4331 ปีที่แล้ว

      even one is too many. lgbtq+ are people with natural variations in sexuality, persecuted by the largest group cis straight people for all kinds of reasons. they're like anyone else, some with histories of abuse (just like cis-het people), some without. do you have to prove your straightness to gay people? some people don't feel or understand heterosexual attraction but no one doubts it exists. People know they are being killed and they still choose to be themselves, what more proof do you need that they are real and authentic.

    The average age in Kenya is roughly 19 years old and a significant portion of the younger generation don't engage in homophobia. The discrimination comes from the older generation, the boomers and the Gen Xrs who are too stuck in their ways and unfortunately, they occupy all positions of power. The advantage that Kenya has is that these politicians are ageing and the cycle of life will eventually clear them from their positions and the new generation will inevitably take over.

I really enjoy the manner in which she connects points made to other's point of view, that makes the discussion flows with coherency and generates immense interest of the viewer. I find myself genuinely laughing, agreeing or disagreeing and sometime even quite emotional based on the topic being discussed. This happens principally due to the topic brought by Edith Kimani, the questions she poses and her apt timed flow. Thanks Edith Kimani, well done ! And so? The fact is, the majority do not want it in their societies. A lot of things have existed in Africa, and the reason they have not made any prominince is because societies have consistently rejected them.
      Which nations are secular? And even if religion is a personal matter, for a society to function, it has to have a unification factor. In our case, common ideals, religion, tribes etc. This is by far the most invansive of all movements and any well meaning person should be very worried.

If the majority of a population of a country wanted to exile/disenfranchise/discriminate any minority out of the country who have done nothing wrong, for just wanting to exercise/ for exercising the same liberties that are afforded to the majority, as a democracy, you could not do it without violating their minority citizens and minority rights. Just because the majority of a country doesn't tolerate the minortiy, does not mean that the State should forgo protecting their right to exist freely as citizens just like the rest of the population without plausible reason other than trying to appease the masses. What you are committing is a bandwagon fallacy.

    • @michaelregis1015

      @@elijahsokoni7997also, Kenya is a secular democratic nation. There are other nations within Africa that a pretty secular (like Botswana, South Africa and others), but this is really nitpicky to isolate.
      Also, you talk about a country needing a common factor for it's unification while vaguely gesturing this assertion to religion tribe etc., but you don't state what about those social institutions are unifying because last time I checked, Kenya is very multiethnic and multireligious. What other unifying factor do Kenyans have other than being Kenyan and what does any of that have to do with LGBT rights given that not everybody is going to agree to them? How can you say your country has unifying factor when you neglect the needs of a minority group in you country that exists in all of your tribes?

Today we see a strong & growing culture of self-enrichment & self-preservation as if the prosperity of one, takes away from another, maybe this speaks to our troubled past & hopeless situation.
