I mainly practice karate and I use iaido for concentration, meditation and faster reflexes and I have noticed a TREMENDOUS difference in my karate kata and sparring
It was a thrill watching Sugano Shihan's every move. How lucky it would be to have him as your Sensei. It was weird, however, to have the French guy translate Shihan's commentary for the hostess as if she couldn't understand what he said. They should have just let her explain what he said.
@ 15:00 I almost 100% guarantee massive samurai battles were much more like the movies and not so formal, however I am not a time traveler hahaha but I'm sure that scheduled 1v1 death matches were definitely very formal not large scale battles..
@@loseingman Battojutsu is one of ancient Samurai's sword techniques . It means "techniques for drawing a sword". (Drawing a sword means killing enemies.) But Samurai's era was over a long time ago. Therefore, Battojutsu was made into Iaido in these days. Iaido means how to protect yourself. But there are many styles of Iaido. So some styles of Iaido separated from traditional Iaido's organization and they named their styles "Battodo". It means to expand one's sensibilities by learning Battojutsu. However, the techniques of them are almost same.
1 iaido and battodo has different organization- 2 Battodo use shape swords iaido only on high grades. 3 battodo practice bamboo cutting, iaido does not.
This is weird. Battodo is an older name for what is now called Iaido. Cutting targets is tameshigiri and doing it originally was meant to test the blade not the swordsman. Cutting targets for the skill or competition is a modern thing. Interesting that this group is calling what it does with tameshigiri by the old name of battodo. The basic stances (kamae) they show are part of training in Iaido and Kendo. Cutting targets is done by some Iaido groups and not by others. There really is nothing unique here.
Craig Hocker unfortunately there are many groups who confuse basic skill with a style I've been to who knows how many events and what ppl pass off as a style our dojo teaches on day one. Not saying the basics should t be done everyday but I think for that most part ppl like tamashigeri because of immediate results I'd say every so often it's cool to make sure your cutting right and tactile use is good for that but it's not an actual disciple unto itself but rather a training tool.
Battodo gets its name from Battōjutsu, the traditional name of what we call iaijutsu. But you're right in that this is a modern sport. It remains unique in being a sport that uses real sharpened blades though, in contrast to kendo or modern iajutsu, which uses blunt blades.

As the programme is for the Western English speaking audience, it is reasonable to choose Western English speaking practitioners to demonstrate their discipline. Moreover, as it is promoting knowledge of Japan to Westerners, it is more empathetic for the audience to choose Westerners.

I really like the sheathing part, like how the sword is turned and twisted without even noticing it before going back to its sheathe.

What is different between the Samurai? Or it is the same thing?
