I really dig Chris's attitude. I have a home studio, but do construction for a living and when I am working I can just do it without thinking about it. Mixing on the other hand, since I am new to it can be frustrating because I have not done it enough to just "do it". Experience is the best teacher and I can only afford to feel like a telephone operator! ;-)
Everyone is complaining about him dissing ITB, his language may not be the best about it but in someway he is right it is easier and more fun to quickly mix a song on a console its the multitasking and big picture thing. Now none of us can really afford consoles so of course ITB is much better, more affordable and editing wise amazing such as editing ITB to change performances even get special effects (reverses, chopped up sequences etc). Its the same with live mixing, digital desks are awesome you can do so much but it is a bit more fun and quicker to have all the gear in racks (assuming you can get your head around it) and quickly do things without menu diving. That said recalls ITB are invaluable.
I mean to each its own. I have the Propellerhead Reason 7 DAW and I must say the SSL mixer is a sweetheart. My DAW has a virtual SSL 9000K and I love EVERY knob function.
Wow ! I have to say 2 things..One I love CLA's Mixes.. 2 ..He does sound like he is talking down to all DAW users.. I have owned my own Studio since 1991... My philosophy has been work with what you have..Your best tool in the your Studio is your ears ! Since I built my latest commercial studio I decided to go a different route.. I do Not own a Mixing console..I have been building an arsenal of Mic pre's and Compressors and Pluggins..ProTools HDX .My recordings?Sound Great! CLA dosent know all.
SSLs are great but still remember working on them 18 yrs ago and seeing a paper written note by engineers left on the desk "Touch this desk and die"... :-)
Oh what a nice guy CLA is! Taking the time out of his day to namedrop and explain to these students that he doesn't understand Pro Tools shortcuts or File/Save-As.
Yes you can click save, turn off your comp and go to bed on PT or whatever, but it will never sound as good as on an SSL or a Neve or any other nice analogue desk. The signals just dont sum the same, and yeah, when you're ready to mix, it IS faster, because you end up reacting to the music rather than think "hmm, click this fader and make the guitars a bit louder". If I had the choice, I would mix all day every day on an SSL. Turns out I only get to do it a couple days of the month xD
to maintane that thing would be super expensive and highly inconveinent. ProTools and one good preamp and a small mixer can do anything that board can do..
Sonically different from 4K E/G... but not bad at all, but different. More clean (like a 9K) by default until you play with the VHD drive to get some dirty sound. I wish they would add the VHD on the AWS 948... that would be dope! And BTW: It is definitely Analog Board... just digitally controlled in some way ;)
FL's popularity has a lot to do with piracy. That's their business model. Why do you think FL always tops 'polls'? vast majority of those votes come from teenagers spending time in online forums using pirated FL copies. actual pros are busy in studio making money mostly with PT
+zeebazu You sound delusional FL Studio you buy it once and that's it. The Daw comes with free updates. As for piracy oh please pretty much every plugin or Daw (PT included) is pirated so don't act like people don't pirate Pro Tools or Cubase even Mac users pirate Logic lolx the thing is FL Studio is nowadays the Daw of Hip Hop if you didn't know so some all those top producers you talking about prolly use FL but their engineer is stuck on PT. There is no need to hate on FL ....the fact is people love it just deal with it
***** nobody is hating FL by stating the obvious. It's a good program no doubt but you'd have to be delusional not to know that the vast majority of fl are pirated. they don't even make an effort to stop piracy because like I said, their business model lies upon organic marketing through its huge pirated userbase. cubase, pt and other daws make a lot more effort to stop piracy because their business model lies elsewhere.
zeebazu Oh please what has the iLOK ever done to stop piracy look at Waves for example the got rid of the iLok because you can't stop piracy there are many DAWS out there from Ableton, Studio One, Logic, Sonar which are in the same field as FL Studio in terms of protection so your point is irrelevant people pirate what's essential just like people pirate Photoshop more instead of Coreldraw. Who cares about PT these days but engineers. Producers don't need PT as much as engineers that's why every studio has got it. But pick let's name producers and see if production is done PT nah mate you just hate FL we get it.
You can definitely mix in Protools... that's what a lot of guys do (including himself, otherwise he wouldn't promote his own "plugins"). That's why he doesn't make any sense in this video. Today, we can mix both ITB, OTB, with Analog Board or not, Outboard gear or not. This is not an issue anymore. Just use what you have and like the most. Use the tools that could allow you to get the job done, regardless what it is. Adapt yourself and use every tools to 110%. That's what good engineers do.
Hmm... I just opened a session I've been working on in pro tools and I stoped and played from about 10 different spots in a second. I don't know what wait time hes talking about!
lol i love the look on these kids faces when hes raving about the recall. ummm pro tools does all that recall in literally maybe a thousandth of a second. even in 2011. (loove cla tho)
Honestly, so does ACID PRO. I've been using it for around 15 years and the faster computers get, the faster the programs and way less recall time. I love CLA too, and it's great listening to him talk about products he endorses.
I just made a CD for my church I had to mix everything on the spot then did all the fine tuning in pro tools, boy was I shocked what you can do it made it sound like a professional CD (besides the fact that it's mono).
ok this console "sounds" much better than many consoles, but without any workflow of the digital gear today, such as the actual automatic recall, you will not be able to make it sound better...
I'm sorry I'm a bit late for the party. guy from 2022 commenting here. But hear me out, imagine how cool it would be if CLA would mix Abbey Road. I'm not saying the original guy did a bad job, not at all. But imagine CLA Abbey Road. I can almost hear it.
Chris, you are a little biased toward what works for you. But I think that all of us would be if we were getting the clientel that Chris is, what he does apparently works so it cant be wrong or absolete. I agree that Chris shouldn't be discounting the possibilitys of mixing in the box, but hes right, it makes you feel like you dont have control because you cant physically see a huge ass board in front of you. Its not just chris that uses these boards, many current artist today use them. 2 cents
Enough this guy seems to be quite Arrogant and condescending and pompous. He is right. Staying in the Box alone will not give you that huge sound,, It's power of the circuitry along with the Dynamics and Kick ass Pres on every channel. It's painstaking for me to have to agree but it's true. us in the box users still get clean mixes. But having outboard gear is what really sweetens that shit up, its just whole other level. and thats where most of us get priced out on.
Man I would've not looked anywhere except Chris had I got the opportunity to be there, and look at these bozos, completely uninterested in the whole thing, they don't even know how big of an opportunity they lost !
They are lucky! But, After these kids get done with school 50K-80K in Loans and make 10-20 hr. They won't be able to afford an SSL, thats just the truth... Maybe we should be teaching them how to use a SSL channel Strip to make it similar to a SSL experience... Most of the kids will "have a computer and a mouse" nice going Chris... A SSL 120k makes you feel "EMPOWERED". So ChrisLordAngel apart from making a little money from my computer and a mouse, how can I get 120k?
To be honest I am kind of disappointed of some things CLA said. That whole hardware fascism isn't really neccessary. Analog guys laugh about VST users, hardware mixer guys laugh about ITB guys, a drummer laughs about sample users. It's just silly. It's NOT the equipment, it's your passion that makes good music. When I enjoy a song I don't give a fuck if it was done with the cheapest PC or on a expensive console!
wow, so they learned absolutely nothing other than they will never be able to buy the console in front of them. buy a couple of behringer midi controllers with the motorized faders and presto, you won't have to use your mouse.
It was all very nice until he showed how "easy" is to recall a mix on the desk. After that I definitely prefer my telephoneish studio with my trusty mouse and keyboard :) But we still love you Chris :)
Umm... I think you will find that transport controls on a computer will shame up a Studer A800. C'mon, this is random-access. Scrubbing etc. Buttons. Jog/Shuttle. Meh!
These poor students sitting bored listening to the guy telling them how old is the console etc bla bla this is old school buy a UAD appolo with SSL Neve API plug-ins use your ears practice be patient work with love you can create great music
its obvious this video was made to try and revieve the dying breed desk, what it takes chris to reset all his setting using snap shot, its already loaded in my settings and all i have to do is press play, not to mention i have a transport control so dont need the mouse when mixing and mastering unless im inserting an effect.
Chris waffles like a Tele Operator! if he spent the 10 minutes actually showing his 30years of experience, hed prob be burning some calories and looking less like a BIG MAC, which i assume is his other purpose in life.
"You realize that when you have the big desk in front of you, you feel empowered… to be in control of something. When you have a screen and a mouse… and a keyboard… you feel like a telephone operator.".... Sorry Chris, you have been demoted to computer station. That's like forcing Dale Earnhardt. Jr. to race my camry.
analogjazz project transport control in pro tools will be faster, Chris was wrong about that... but, mixing will be 10-20 times faster on a console, that’s truth.
I think he means cause you don't have to click, like you need to EQ you do it in 1 second, cause in DAWs you gotta look for the EQ, add it, and then do it. But still who uses consoles anymore? I learned with them but haven't used one in ages.
I love chris lord alge but when it comes to total recall on the console you have to laugh what's the point in pro tools all of settings can come up in seconds.
This guy has cred but you wont learn crap from watching him. Chris, why dont you take Pensados approach and actually help people instead of using bull crap analogies to describe your mixing techniques such as "I just go for it man" or "I just don't think about it".You talk down to people who mix in the box but guess what, we can't all use consoles. This really gave you nothing, of course its easier with a big console built to mix on, but that is like 3/100 of how it may sound in the end, its the knowlage that really counts.
Consoles are just like sport car... some guys need big one to compensate and to feel in power of something for once ;) I love SSL Consoles, but this video is just a really really bad one...
WTF, Chris? Incredible talent, obviously... But EXTREMELY self-righteous. He talks about DAW users like they are unable to do anything quickly and nothing keeps up and blah blah blah... lol... he might be a good sound engineer, but his arguments just don't make any sense. Seriously, play, stop, play, forward? Dude, any DAW (Protools, Cubase, Logic, you name it) do have this functions controllable directly from the keyboard. Just learn how to use it... I love SSL, but that's just an horrible video for them...
I really dig Chris's attitude. I have a home studio, but do construction for a living and when I am working I can just do it without thinking about it. Mixing on the other hand, since I am new to it can be frustrating because I have not done it enough to just "do it". This man is a legend. How awesome for him to take the time to teach others
ALGE is a legend... but he's an old dog in terms of tech. Still, lots of respect for the man.
I must agree on that statement.
Dave Pensado just smiles when Chris talks like that.
Everyone is complaining about him dissing ITB, his language may not be the best about it but in someway he is right it is easier and more fun to quickly mix a song on a console its the multitasking and big picture thing. Have to agree with you 100%.
People get so hung up on gear, but its the depth of musicianship that is far far more important.
SSL 4K+neve! Simply the best
Yes you can click save, turn off your comp and go to bed on PT or whatever, but it will never sound as good as on an SSL or a Neve or any other nice analogue desk. Dave Pensado is making my top favorite mixer...
Anyhow nice SSL !! lol
Post us some, we'd love to hear!
@bigbirdtalent there not students, they're compressors
Thank you very much indeed from Ukraine !!!
CLA is a MIX GOD! Hey Chris remember XAVION? Still love that project.
students bought Garageband next day :lol
+Fuad Rubbi you mean FL STUDIO............LOL

Garage band has auto recall too
the iphone version.
Hmm... I just opened a session I've been working on in pro tools and I stoped and played from about 10 different spots in a second. I don't know what wait time hes talking about!
Luv his shirt.
This console with automated faders :)
Oh Shiela.. gonna a love ya till the break of dawn.. GOLD.
He's putting down the mixing function of pro tools. I know people who use pro tools for recording and editing but use a mixer for mixing.
You've convinced me, Chris. I'm gonna trade my iMac for an SSL console, straight across.
when i have a screen, a keyboard, and a mouse, i feel very empowered. BUT no doubt about it CLA rocks.
True, until that old, big ass computer goes down and then good luck ; )
Let's not forget his Waves plugin bundle. He's on both sides.
mix with two hands instead of one...brilliant! ive heard of this! lol
Well said Sir, well said...
That's what I thought. I guess the fact that Abbey Road uses is enough to prove that it is a great board.
lol i love the look on these kids faces when hes raving about the recall. ummm pro tools does all that recall in literally maybe a thousandth of a second. even in 2011. (loove cla tho)

@TheSafetysheep go to a big studio and start as an assistant.. 250,000 won't make any difference.
these kids dont know how lucky they are....
OMG Finally Chris admit his obsession with the E console it makes him feel in control.
funny enough I feel in control when am using my D.A.W
Girl sitting behind Chris looks PUMPED.
Gotta love the P.T.A.!!!
Pro Tools Automation.......
Those students are like, what the hell are all these words.
I just made a CD for my church I had to mix everything on the spot then did all the fine tuning in pro tools, boy was I shocked what you can do it made it sound like a professional CD (besides the fact that it's mono).
hahahaha I was thinking the same, I suspect we're terribly right
ok this console "sounds" much better than many consoles, but without any workflow of the digital gear today, such as the actual automatic recall, you will not be able to make it sound better...
Ableton is definitely faster than the SSL haha. But he's right Pro Tools can't keep up 😂
agreed, the analog vs digital argument isn't relevant anymore
Every time is hear chris talk I feel like quitting, he talks down to people who cant afford this gear, not good.
SSL speaks for its self. Mr Alge is flying first class. End of story really. LOL
Stop, play, stop, play, fast forward, stop, pl...BOOM!!

most people cant afford a 250k+ board chris
So much fluff.
Did he seriously spend a full 30 seconds talking about how cool it is that the play and stop buttons are next to each other?????
I agree Chris.. Let's say you loan me 250000$ for the console and I'll stop feeling like an tele operator haha
brought to you by ssl
