The worst part of the 2010's, not counting the game output, was the franchise's reception online. After Sonic Boom released, it was like almost every online personality decided that Sonic was little more than a punching bag and just went to town. And Sega leaned very heavily into that when they hired a certain "Grump" who was _notorious_ for bashing the series as their official brand ambassador. That is how low we sunk in the 10's, people; Sega saw their own headlining franchise as a _punchline._
@TheRealMightyEmperor Agreed. I'm so glad they hired Korone, a.k.a. someone who actually _likes_ the franchise, and gave Arin the boot after years of letting him slander the series in the name of "brand recognition."
I think the lost love for Generations is unfounded, the game should be totally enjoyed for what it IS, a revisit of past locations with excellent level design, replayability, pretty visuals, and good controls - the most important aspects of a Sonic game to simply have a good time are there.
Completely fair, but I don't enjoy playing a lot of the game anymore. Most missions are a big miss in my opinion even when it was new. I do not like the classic Sonic levels either. Basically only the modern Sonic stages still appeal to me. Shadow and Chaos boss fights are good, but not the rest. It might be worth doing a dedicated video on the subject.
@@TheRealMightyEmperorThe story may not be special. But I think the game doesn't have an story in mind. And quite frankly, story has never been the series strongpoint anyways.
@@jaretco6423 It's not just the story that bothered me, but like I say in the video if there ever was a time to put some effort in, the anniversary with marvel styled cross over potential would be that game.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor I understand where your coming from. But personally, I still think Generations is an heck of alot of fun and I have no issue with it.
Man, imagine if they *didn't* change the old Sonic movie 1 design, not only would Sonic be a laughing stock (again) but the movie would've arguably perform really badly, which would mean there wouldn't be such a big increase in new fans, which means frontiers would've most likely not been as successful as it was and that would've most likely resulted in the franchise getting canned completely.
straight facts, i actually knew at the time of the original movie design that if they didn’t change it, sonic was actually gonna be done for. thank god that didn’t happen.
I'm not going to lie before the movies I was ready to give up on Sega and Sonic, someone like me that grew up playing the very first video game Sonic the hedgehog on the Sega Genesis and seeing Sonic go so down hill to the point where it's embarrassing yeah I'm glad Sega started to care again ever since they gave up on the Dreamcast and with the failure of Sonic 06 I can see how Sega started going down this dark Hill to the sad point of 2010s
I'm so *so* glad we're seemingly getting out of the 2010's style games. I always loved this franchise and it became increasingly hard to get enjoyment out of it. It wasn't all bad, but if you're like me and 2D/classic gameplay isn't for you and you greatly value a fun story that doesn't flanderize the characters then there wasn't a whole lot to get out of it
Sadly, most of these could work if done right: 1. Sonic Generations: - Have Tails and the other characters playable, except Robotnik and the other bosses, minus Shadow and Silver - bring in classic versions of Knuckles, Amy and the Chaotix - bring in Mighty, Ray, Nack, Bean and Bark, (both classic and modern versions) 2. Sonic Forces: - Someone came up with the idea that Tails becomes Gadget’s mentor and I like the idea - Remove Classic Sonic, he is not needed - make Tails and Knuckles playable - have Shadow be the protagonist, this type of game feels more like a Shadow story than a Sonic story, plus, Sonic got owned in the beginning, so after that, the story can focus on Shadow along with Knuckles and Tails. - Make Infinite a better character 3. Sonic Lost World: - Robotnik should be playable at least once since he is helping Sonic and Tails - Tails acting more mature - Knuckles not be treated like a joke - Have Knuckles and Amy more Relevant in the story, or get rid of them altogether. It just feels pointless to have them both there if they’re only there for a few minutes. -Make The Deadly Six more like their IDW incarnations
Let's hope Sega doesn't make the same mistake again for Sonic like how they did with the 2010's. As a matter of fact, Let's hope Sega/Sonic Team decides to take notes from the development process of Super Mario Brothers Wonder.
I think they really treat the franchise really badly. They don't even advise or help writers when they are being murdered And they don't care about the character's arc, and end up pointlessly bringing them back as boss characters or NPCs.
yeah, in the 2010s, sega really ignored pleasing their fans, and tried to please the critics. i think when you work on doing things people like instead of pleasing people who just generally could not be pleased, you come off with more successful games and stories.
@@TheRealMightyEmperorI would love the Chao Garden to return. With modders showing what could added to the Garden to updated graphics for it I think the Chao Garden would be successful. Just imagine all the fans who would like to raise Cheese's stats and evolve Cheese. Not to mention using Chao as power-ups.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor It is. Yet it would be great to see a modern take. Yet I think they would need to update the coloration for some of the Two-tone Chao though. Especially the red-two Chao, green Two-tone Chao, white Two-tone Chao, and the normal Two-tone Chao second evolutions and the Power power normal Two-tone Chao. Yet in the Chao in Space video released years ago it looked like they updated the Two-tone normal fly type by making it purple and the tips of it's limbs a different shade of green though.
I believe that it could also be due partly to the Saga mandates and also due how Saga was handling its management and how it was treating their workers at that time which was sadly so horrible that it was even in the news. I remember that there was a lot of hard and strong negative feelings regarding Saga at that time. This was one reason why the characters were portrayed badly.
Sega of Japan really loves Yakuza but couldn't care less about Sonic. But darn it if they won't let America control the franchise. You get a spin off or a movie here or there. But that's it. The comics? Not even the new IDW series is canon. All those new characters they keep adding? Not one makes it into the modern games. Oh sure mobile games, but that's it. Thing is, Sega NEEDS Sonic to survive because Sonic is a beloved mascot worldwide. Without it, Yakuza would stay obscure to everyone outside Japan. I know it's gained a lot of fans worldwide, but nowhere near the level of Sonic. I want more variety at Sega. But Sega has to be willing to put the love and effort into these games and that includes time and budget. If all the money is going into Yakuza, what about Golden Axe? Streets of Rage? Jet Set Radio? Crazy Taxi? Shinobi? Those are gonna live or die based on how much the developers care and that could also depend on how much they are paid. Same goes for Sonic. The movies and Sonic Prime feel like passion projects. Those were made to prove a point, that Sonic could be successful in the right hands. Same for Sonic Mania. Sega of Japan has guts, they prove it in every Yakuza game. Those games are ballsy af. But with Sonic they hold back so hard. They treat the fans like they are stupid even if most of those fans are just kids. It's not right. Sonic is just as popular as Mario. Sonic deserves better!
@@Tailsfly593 Both Sonic and the Sega Genesis sold better in the west. The Saturn did well in Japan but also had a lot of exclusives that stayed in Japan. Saturn also didn't have Sonic at launch or any mainline Sonic game 3D or otherwise. It had some spin offs and that's it. Any of the ones made in the US were cancelled. When the Dreamcast launched in Japan, once again, Sonic was absent. There were only 4 games and one of them was Godzilla which even got a special VMU for it. A year later the Dreamcast launched in the US with Sonic Adventure and it sold really, really well! I'm just saying since Sonic was made for the west, maybe they should let the west handle Sonic from now on, including mainline games? Heck Sonic Adventure 2 was made in the US!
Because it was. The only reason perception is changing is because the people that grew up with the 2000s games are now old enough to make video essays about Sonic. It's not that the games have gotten any better quality-wise-Sonic 06 will always remain a disastrous failure that is less polished than any of the mainline 2010s games-people are just too easily influenced by nostalgia.
It is a Dark Age even if it started in the mid of the 00s. I recall that we got the two Adventures, the Advance trilogy, Heroes and Sonic Rush. They had flaws, but those were good games and proved that Sonic Team knew what they wanted to do. Then they started to shit themselves with 06, then the Storybooks with their crappy controls (story and memes be damned) and other lame titles that only stightly fixed the tenue, but the damage was done such as Sonic 4, Unleashed and Colors (even if it was the light at the end of the tunnel). The last game I played before dropping Sonic was Secret Rings and those shitty controls, with a story I could not care less (unless for the memes) and a waste of good music and scenery (I like stories based on 1001 Nights and arabian folklore). Honestly, if it wasn't for Mania and the good quality fan games, I would've stopped to bother with the franchise altogether.
In my opinion, Frontiers really only exists as a way for Sonic to remain relevant in a gaming landscape plagued by open world video games, especially those that took a bit too much inspiration from Breath of the Wild (Frontiers included.)
It truely is great that the movies were able to fix up SEGA's opinion about what to do to the Sonic franchise, and I think that the upcoming third one will likely give them even more confidence about making better Sonic games. That movie could possibly become one of the most highly grossing movies ever made, mostly because of the fact that the second movie's mid-credits scene revealed that Sonic's world-famous black and red doppleganger hedgehog, (Shadow) will be in it, and that he will be playing a big roll in the plot of it because of which of the Sonic games that Paramount revealed that they will be adapting elements from into that upcoming movie, are. the Sonic 3 movie could maybe get awarded as the best movie of the year if it gets done right. I really hope that that studio can achive that goal.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Yeah that is funny, and I know that you're talking about the director, (Jeff Fowler,) because I've heard that he's the person who made the opening CG cutscene of the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off game. I've also heard that Jeff Fowler is a major fan of Shadow, so that makes me think that he could hopefully be wanting to do what lots of old fans want to see be done in Sonic 3, which is having Shadow be shown like he was in Sonic Adventure 2 as a character who was doing revenge stuff because he'd been memory swapped into thinking that that's what he was supposed to be doing, then later remembers that he was truly supposed to be doing the opposite of that and joins Sonic to help cause a heroic attempt to save the world. Instead of having him be a messed up edgeloard character who only cares about himself through the whole movie.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Me too. That studio didn't write Knuckles and Tails wrongly in the second movie so that also gives me some faith that Shadow will possibly get written correctly in the third movie.
It seems like the 2010s was the great decade of impacting games and everything went down the drain, like, bro, business was horrible, man, that's not possible, bro, there are still some things that are going wrong, could it be the fault of the games that came out in 7th? generation of consoles?
@@TheRealMightyEmperor damn, so it makes perfect sense for these PS3 Xbox 360 games and others to have the biggest negative reviews but I would like to play these games even if they are bad
The 'sprite OG' era ("1", "CD", "2", "3 & Knuckles", and "Mania (Plus)" in chronological order) is the true golden era of the blue hedgehog. There might be other "Sonic" games like "Sonic Pocket Adventure" and "Sonic Advance" that come close. But in terms of true quality, nothing will ever top the mainline 2D sprite OG "Sonic" games...at least not without fan mods.
I agree with you, one of the thing's I hated from Sega during the 2010's was the bad decision making, they threw Sonic Lost world + Sonic Boom on the Wii U although being made for more advanced consoles, they rushed sonic forces & the stories weren't that interesting throughout the 2010's. If the games were given time + correct consoles and good writing was also present I think it could've probably saved the 2010's era.
One name is mostly to blame : SAMMY. Look into the investor reports from the Sega takeover till the movie releases, they underinvested, reorganised many times, split SEGA into a new company then merged again then reorganised some more did a few more efficiency cuts here and there. It's almost a miracle that there is even staff left of the original Sonic Team after all those years of management abuse. It no wonder why Yuji Naka in 2006 left the company as he was director and was fed up with all the management bull he had to endure just to get stuff done, he wanted back to programming for a reason
Now he is in jail. When I say SEGA, I really mean any leadership involved. Most people probably mean the same too even if they never heard of SAMMY. The point is the people in control were bad. But yes what you say of SAMMY is true.
I personally loved lost world 3ds and generations 3ds. Their not my top favorite of sonic but their not terrible at all. I wish Sega could combine them with their non handheld versions... It'd be nice to have the better versions contain the handheld versions levels ...
Frozen Factory on the 3ds I cannot defend. 30-ish minute of a ball puzzle basically. Al lot of the 3ds levels go on for too long and rely on slow simple puzzles. The special stages were awful as well. Of course, that doesn't mean no one can enjoy it, but the 3DS version especially struggles to be considered good by most.
I watched a good video about how the reason why sega treated Sonic so poorly is part reason of some investor called sammy pachinko mashines which is a kind of gambeling thing in japan, but that investor didn't really care about Sonic and more wanted him as a public face so they didn't seem like such bad people. that's also why it's called sega sammy and not the other way around as it usually is when investors sponsor firms
"Confident??", well, Sega used to be extremely "confident" about its Dreamcast with its intensive investment..................... and now how many young men have heard of it?
Even now, to me, “good enough” isn’t where sonic should be. I’m done hoping for better things, I’ll be here if they make an ACTUAL banger game, but I don’t think I’m about this “PEAK FICTION” era cuz it really ain’t.
Well, Sega did say that they hope for Sonic to surpass Mario in recent news. While I and many others believe this is possible, they still have a lot of work to do in order to follow up with the plan.
@@NoCash19 Nintendo's games appeal to their audience, so long as that remains the case their consistency is a virtue. Sometimes like with Zelda they will evolve their formula.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Personally, from NSMBU up until we got hit with Odyssey, I think there was definitely a dip in quality when it came to the mainline Mario titles. It wasn't *that* bad, though--the games felt a lot less inspired than what came before, but were still perfectly serviceable platformers if you ignored that. Basically, Mario had a "mid" phase.
Pontac and Graph really wanted to do something with this franchise but were basically told to piss off by Sega and had to use Wikipedia. U Fort despite using Wikipedia, they were given strict mandates that contradict the Wiki... Which was Sega's idea
The Sonic series in the 90’s and early 2000 were the best shows I see, I am still trying to catch up with Sonic X, boom sucks to be honest, Sonic X had every voice actor for that series and the actors were awesome until they part ways and I really thought that Silver and blaze would show up after Sonic 06 would released, but instead we got fan made’s. (I am not sure if it fan made or not).
Despite growing up with the franchise during the 2010s, I have little fondness for that era. I thought Lost World was fun (gameplay and music wise) but I didn’t bother to buy any of the Boom games. The character designs were so unappealing-never mind how awful Rise of Lyric actually was. Instead, I ended up becoming a “Neo Classic Fan” from playing a ton of Sonic Classic Collection and the iOS remasters. This worked out perfectly when Mania was revealed and released, only for Forces to be a complete slap in the face. After that, the long drought of significant releases made me mostly quit caring about the franchise until 2021. Now with all the frequent releases again, it’s nice to know how the early 2000s kids must’ve felt with the constant flow of new content.
Very interesting perspective to hear about! I assumed most newer fans wouldn't have been interested in looking at older games if they only new about the modern stuff.
Sonic Adventure 2 was a quality downgrade from SA1 graphically, physics, story line. Sonic 1-Mania and Sonic Adventure are the Best, Project P06 fixed 2006. Everything else was bleck
I do agree for the most part I always thought forces was the symbol of everything that they shouldn't have done with the series play some people do say if you're out of idea and if Sega is out of ideas they always ask your fan is it right now they're making any better stuff than they are Kenworth for far lesser or no budget at all and also I do think this stuff should be pointed out
To make it somewhat short: I think 2010's made best Sonic games in terms technical quality of them being like an actual tested AAA-games while 2000's had more risky ideas wrapped in half-baked rushed programming mess. The reason why I don't have any hate towards 2010's is because Sega always messed up with Sonic before that even in Jason's era. Rushed games, canceled cartoons with cut budget, comics which got barely promoted and overall absence of the course of the franchise. Sega always tried to get the whole pie so they were just doing every genre or idea Nintendo and any other game company already had. And it's still happening to this day where Frontiers, Murder of Sonic and Sonic Superstars are definitely copied from other popular games(not saying it's automatically bad, but it's a fact). Besides, I will definitely get hate for this but 2010's gave us the most consistent and most professional Sonic VA team ever who deserves a lot of respect for going strong for 13 years, Roger Craig Smith deserves the appreciation for his work whether you love or hate his performance. Honestly, I would compare 2010's with the late 90's since then Sega had no idea what to do with Sonic and made hundred games little to nobody even managed to play. But, at least Sonic Forces though being dull cardboard at least is more playable than Sonic R
while 2010 was mostly low budget I think 2008 though 2013 was pretty decent (mostly Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic 4 Ep 1 and 2 and Sonic Lost World Wii U/PC where mediocre and Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Lost World 3DS sucks.) The reason why Sonic games where low budgeted was because of mediocre Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity where, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic and the Secret Rings being bad and Sonic 06 sucks hard (and I felt the hate for that game is warranted) and how Sonic Fanboys like Spax3 and Richard Kuta whined about Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters not being in the games and how characters like Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Silver, Blaze, Marine, the Chaotix and Cream are taking the spot light from Sonic (for Shadow's case in 06 IMO) and how Sega should just make a new 2D Sonic game. I think Sonic Forces was like enough is enough it's time to take this IP seriously after how bad that game was and that Sonic Movie really woke up Sega-Atlus to take their mascot seriously after the whole Ugly Sonic backlash and it shows, not counting Sonic Colors Ultimate and Sonic Origins/Sonic Origins Plus (BC I don't count remasters as a new game) Sonic Frontiers is a huge step in the right direction and the IDW Comics are a good read (better than post Issue 50 of Pre-Super-Genesis-Wave world of the Archie Comics) and Sonic Prime is enjoyable, I hope Sega-Atlus keeps the momentum for making good Sonic games, unlike Activision-Blizzard and how they messed up Overwatch and Ubisoft and how they messed up Assassin's Creed.
Yes I also hope the momentum for better Sonic continues. On Sonic Forces though, I do not think that was them thinking enough was enough because of how cheap that game was. Sadly it seems more like they saw it as an easy way to milk the fans without trying hard.
Frontiers lacks even something as basic as proper momentum, has tedious and dull combat with some of the ugliest visuals in a Sonic game. It's far from the right direction.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor The real issue was the fact that Sega quit the console market (mostly because of the Sega Saturn which the negative stigma bleed into the Dreamcast) and made mediocre titles to bad titles in the 2000s (with the Sonic Advance Trilogy, the Sonic Rush series and Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations being the only shining hope.) That and how the Fanbase acted at that time with voice actors, character design, recolors and rule 34 and how they where being compared to Chris-Chan (which from what I heard, the Sonichu comics brows more from Pokémon than Sonic,) Forces was that wake up call becuase Sega kept rushing games like Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and that Sonic Forces was rushed due to how bad Rise of Lyric was and that with the Sonic Boom sub series, Sega went all in and got the joker card, and I think Sonic Forces ended up being lackluster because of how awful Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was and that game was a wake up call for them to stop rushing games and Sonic Movie 1 was the coffee brewing (after the Ugly Sonic backlash) that Sonic is just as Iconic as Mario. I hope when the next Nintendo's Next Console, PlayStation 6, New Xbox that We get Sonic Frontiers 2 and that Sega-Atlus keeps the Open Zone formula and sticks with it and that We won't have another Sonic Heroes and Sonic Lost World situation
@@1upGaming1up I am not sure open zone has a good future. Sonic works best with well designed missions and challenges. Cyberspace needed a better budget, those traditional levels felt tacked on.
@@1upGaming1up But then we'll have another Sonic frontiers situation instead. Honestly, if there is one game that which direction should be taken it is Sonic Dream Team, a 3d Sonic game done mostly right, with potential for improvement.
hello there "The Mighty Emporerer" , i watched your video and it kind of reminded me of an other i watched earlier named as , "The Story of Sonic Colors" , particularly because when i arrived at a section from that video from 26:29 to 35:47 of the , and MAN not only did it very well explained what exactly is what did sonic team did that they ended up taking the franchise in a completely new direction that defined sonic for the 2010s , as well as very well explaining the context behind it in the section before that, but also that sonic's 2000s personality had been kept for japanese audiances while western fans had to deal with those stupid storylines in that period of time , i won't spoil you on any thing other than it might have to do with the writers probably taking anspiration from Adventures of sonic TV show from the 90s , i hope you take a look at the video as soon as possible
Since colours the western games had new writers that knew next to nothing about the franchise. I am familiar with this situation, part of what made the 2020's suck.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor i know where are you getting at, i'am just asking you to watch the video from youtube "The Story of Sonic Colors" specifically from 26:47 to 35:47 of it , as there quiet an interesting explanation that deserve to be heard when it comes to the 2010s direction of sonic , and how it could relate to a certain old 90s sonic cartoon ,
It's interesting to think how different the series would be if 06 was the big masterpiece it was supposed to be, on the one hand sure we'd probably be on a better streak than we have been, but because of 06 we got games like unleashed, colours and generations and mania some of my favourites of all time. Boom definitely was another nail in the coffin but let's not forget sonic being a punching bag started around heroes I believe, since that was most likely the worst received mainline game at that point, then shadow, 06 and unleashed came and were even worse received
Heroes may have been received less positively by hardcore fans and critics, but it was the first multiplatform Sonic released and was played by a huge new generation.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor very true, heroes definitely introduced a lot of people to the series, I do quite enjoy the game, but it was definitely the start of a rockier road
Honestly, I think 2000's was at Sonic's worst time era. 2010's wasn't the best era for Sonic either. But we have games like Generations & Mania that had superb quality. Those games still holds up remarkably well and it brought the series back to it's glory days. Until something like Lost World, Boom: Rise of Lyric and Forces brought the series down again. But I digress. The 2000's on the other hand were far worst. There were so many games around the time that were either mediocre or just just plain bad. We wouldn't forget how miserable Sonic 06 is. But there other very low quality games like Shadow the Hedgehog, the Storybook series, Chronicles: Dark Brotherhood, the Rival games, the Riders series, Sonic Genesis and even something like Heroes & Unleashed. The problem with Sonic in the 2000's is that they were trying to hard to make the games lean towards teenagers age rather than everyone ages +3 & more by making the games more dark, edgy, having serious tone & looked more cooler compared to the more lighthearted series like Mario or Kirby and they were trying to come up with an different gameplay style they were experimenting cause thymey seem the old styles were getting repetitive & people may not like them anymore. But the way they made the games and the potential it was going for was all completely wasted and most people were sick of this of the direction the series was going for. They took off the " If it ain't broke, don't fix it " law and just makes whatever they wanted to make without thinking much effort and sticking to it's material. The only deeming quality games we had around that era were the Advance Trilogy and Rush Trilogy. But even those series didn't saved it from the monstrosities that Sonic has been having in that year as they were overshadowed by the console versions. Even something like the Sonic X anime didn't help out much because the show was so dull & uninspired. Honestly what they say is true. Ever since Sonic jumped into 3D, things has been very rough for Sonic. The Adventure games were fine. But aside from that, the 2000's was where Sonic is at his worst. Sonic hasn't been this goid after the 90's. We do get some good ones every now and than. But most of the time, we do get mdeiocre or bad ones.
Thing is, a lot of those 2000's games were received well by kids of the era, which is why these days they now have a boost of support from the kids who now grew old enough to voice their opinions on them. In the same light, Sonic X was very successful for the Sonic brand even in dub. Lumping games like heroes and Sonic Riders 1 into the bad category I think is also wrong. Having on through them, 2010's Sonic felt like the darkest and least hopeful of them all by a long shot. I don't think it is mere coincidence the franchise is becoming more like the 2000's again right as things have begun to look up.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor I can at least appreciated they were please more younger audience or kids of knowing the franchise. But unfortunately IMO, this is not how they should've done it. Kids deserves better than that. Like how is an game like Shadow the Hedgehog considered to be good when it has horrible gameplay style, structure and so many cutscenes with many curse words that felt force? Or Sonic 06 that's the most buggy, glitchy & obnoxious game and how they that teaches alot of bad message & was so braindeaded in the story? Or something like Secret Rings where it controls horribly and the way is structure that it's so boring to do. Or something like Chronicles where it's the blue blur first ever RPG game that wanted to get kids into RPG and the way it's played and the story was told was all garbage. All those games in the 2000's were very forced and not all out smart that kids deserves better treatment than what they got.
Well after the 2010s and all the *interesting* Sonic games we received(though I haven’t played them due to me not having enough money), after Playing Frontiers, I believe Sega is on the right track. Even though it will be rough, I believe with enough determination and willpower, Sega (and in turn, Sonic) will return back to their 2000s glory days. Right? It is the 2000s right?
I joined full-on into Sonic April 2018, mid-drought, precisely because VALVe barely ever released stuff and I was chewing on the same content by then from how I obsessed over their work. At least there was enough Sonic material to process for newcomers to keep myself from repeating the same until a few months before Frontiers, right?
With a series as old as Sonic, there is always going to be content if you are new. That can't really count as a point in their favour otherwise most game franchises could claim the same thing.
I've always found it strange how the mid-2000s were considered "the dark age". Shadow was an okay game. We had Sonic Rush and SR Adventure which told good stories with good levels, Sonic Unleashed was good (though the night time stages were meh for the most part). Black Knight was alright too. 2010's Sonic had Colours, a lazy game with one or two levels that you can literally drop the controller and beat, slow platforming and writing that, though objectively better than forces, is less likeable than forces in my opinion. You had Lost World which i can't even count as a sonic game, the Boom games which were barely passable on the 3ds, Generations 3ds which wasn't even very exciting, and Sonic Forces. The only good thing from 2010's sonic was Generations and Mania, but those two games are using Unleashed and the classics as a basis, and the Boom cartoon which dropped off pretty hard despite it being okay. That's the real Dark Age of Sonic right there. If Cream the Rabbit isn't playable in the next Sonic game, even if its 2d, i'm going to be upset.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor it's probably the Adventure 2 (overrated game) nostalgia blinding them combined with the fact many of them might have grown in the 90s, so they'd have the "it was better in the old days" kind of mindset
Would it hurt them to bring back adventure character development and put effort in game design and stories Sonic and the black knight was a wii title and it represents sonics character better than any 2010 games
Hell nah bro who the hell lost love for sonic generations?? That game is amazing on every level Content gameplay soundtrack the only exception is the story
the meta era had it's rises and downfalls but wasn't a perfect era for sonic bad thing in meta era: sonic forces, sonic boom games including rise of lyiric, sonic the hedgehog 4 ep1,2,sonic free riders, sonic lost world that's the bad side about this game but that doesn't mean we didn't had good things from this era either: good things in meta era: sonic colors, sonic generation, sonic all stars racing, sonic & sega all stars racing, sonic mania, sonic mania plus, team sonic racing, sonic dash,SEGA AGES Sonic The Hedgehog Arcade game, sonic jump fever etc.. so the meta era wasn't too bad but wasn't great either.
Oh yeah? Well they hated Rhythm Thief and Hero Bank more. Because Rhythm Thief has no sequel and Hero Bank hasn’t been localized! I doubt anybody here even knows what Hero Bank is!
It's been so long Mr Emperor! Missed your awesome reviews! Yeah you're right the performance hasn't been that great! Sonic Dreams was meh... It's only Superstars that was a success but yet.. SEGA hates their mascot they can't even begin to match with Nintendo
It's not better that sega treats their development team sonic team like garbage and they barely give them a lot time to develop sonic games Which is a lottery reasons why a lot of sonic games lack polish and have some minor glitches and its not sonic teams fault is sega's fault
you know like what you saying actually you make lot of since Sega was so greedy and lazy that almost made their own mascot sonic die. because of that I think they want to catch up Nintendo success so badly that put all those things for sonic all of them are stale to me Sega doesn't see they care about sonic because all they want is money and fam but at least sega respect there fan made sonic stuff.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor i think sega of japan mostly hate sonic atleast sega of america give a damn about this franchise..if they were careless about this franchise they wouldn't made a contract with paramount to create sonic's cinematic side of the franchise or made a deal with IDW to create IDW sonic comics you should atleast give them some credit for that..sega of japan mostly don't give a shit about sonic they are mostly focused on yakuza and sega of europe...well...idk about them but my point is sonic is better off with the sega of japan and sega of americal should handle the franchise not japan
Sega Europe has no saying on what America and Japan does, it just translate and distribute the games, with some european studios for other franchises like Total War and Football Manager. I heard they want to reinforce the european division in the latest business report, so they could have more saying and people working for Like a Dragon, Persona and Sonic in the future.
@@JakeThehedgehog-m1x Westerners like Sonic, while japanese people not so much other than nostalgia factor and cuteness. Koreans like Sonic as much as the west, with the bonus factor of having the same sensibilities of the japanese. Too bad that Sega of Korea only bothers with translation and distribution, or else they'd be great contributors to Sonic.
No. Like I say in the video, Sonic is now in a good place. But he wasn't before the movies and I want to highlight why. Before the days of Frontiers, people defended 2010 SEGA's handling of Sonic. My hope is if people understand how it was not good, they will not let it happen in the future.
I wish I'd bought Sonic Superstars instead of Sonic Frontiers. The open world gameplay in Sonic Frontiers was just not what I'm used to, the whole game was nothing but boredom, annoyance, confusion and frustration. I actually liked Sonic Forces more.
Damn. Chasing the open world trend was not what Sonic needed, but I think I still enjoyed it more than forces (At least for the first 2 islands anyway). However, Sonic Forces is a shorter game so it is easier to play (Ironically, it being so short is still bad though)
Really? I mean I know Sega has made it's mistakes in the past sure but like...are you sure? I think you are discredit them way too much that They barely did anything? I mean...if it wasn't because of them well mostly Sega of America to be honest...we wouldn't have the sonic movies(which getting better) and the IDW sonic comics which decent amount of people actually like them just saying you know..like sometimes you should give credit where credit is due unless you disagree which that's fine
I have to disagree with the future being bright. Granted this is all subjective, but I find the IDW comic to be a giant nothing, Superstars is an underwhelming mess and Frontiers is just an insult to 95% of Sonic's audience. But I like your video, I just can't resist a chance to be contrarian about this stuff.
Unfortunately that can not be assumed. There is nothing stopping Sega putting that money into Sakura Wars, gambling or a holiday fund. Xbox owning Bethesda didn't seem to make Starfield any better.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor it will for Activision/Blizzard tho I'm sure Bethesda has there own pride of handling themselves but if it wasn't for Xbox we would of gotten Hi-Fi Rush which is a way better game than Forspoken like if there polar opposites of the same coin to a game but Phill Spencer himself is a gamer so I'm sure he be willing to help Sega since in term finances Xbox is way better than PlayStation
Redfall and Starfield just shows Bethesda still sucks under Micro$oft's ownership (and the same will be for Activision-Blizzard and maybe Ubisoft if Micro$oft buys them, better them than Sega, Halo + Rabbids will be better LOL) if Microsoft buys Sega then we'll get a game worse than Sonic 06 or Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric, Micro$oft never cared about gaming and Xbox is pretty much dying thanks to games like Halo Infinite, Redfall and Starfield and they won't save Overwatch "2," Banjo-Kazooie, Conker, Crash and Spyro and in purgatory. Sega is doing better right now more so than the 2000s and 2010s with Sonic Frontiers being a step in the right direction (Not a perfect game,) bringing back classic IPs like Jetset Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe, Shinobi and Streets of Rage and rumors of NiGHTS returning, instead of relying on Yakuza, Sonic and Persona. This is all because of how successful Sonic Movie 1 and 2 where why Sega is back to where they where during the Sega Genesis/Sega Mega Drive era, Xbox might end up as the next Sega if they make mediocre to bad games like Redfall or Starfield, putting out new controllers and buying studios like Disney.

Xbox is far worse right now, because of how Halo Infinite, Redfall and Starfield are mediocre to horrible, just recently they laid off employees at Activision-Blizzard so fans of Crash Bandiccot and Spyro the Dragon will be left with nothing for 5 to 10 years again (look at Banjo-Kazooie and Conker and how they announced Perfect Dark and no news on the game and how angry fans are of those series are) Overwatch "2" will still be sh*t and Xbox will just put out new controllers, Micro$oft has been putting their games on PC and Nintendo because they know they're not going to last much longer. Wonder and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom just shows that, yes Nintendo isn't perfect (no one is) but the writing is on the wall, Xbox is dying and they care about is Buying Studios and putting out new Controllers instead of making Good games like in the Xbox 360 era (after Halo Reach they started to suck,) I'm glad I gave up on PlayStation and Xbox and switched to PC and stuck with Nintendo for consoles.
To be fair, 2010's were still much better than 2000's. Even at their respective low points like 06 and Forces, 2010's beat the 2000's. Colours and Generations were easily the best 3d Sonic games, at least until Sonic Dream Team released. 2010's saw some of the best games in the series released like Sonic Racing Transformed and Mania, nothing during the 2000's even comes close to that.
Sorry I and a lot of others would disagree. Mania as I say in the video was good but also was clearly good because of the fan developers behind it, not because of Sega's approach to Sonic. Colours I heavily dislike and it is a stretch to call it a 3d game. Generations is alright but it doesn't top adventure for me. Sonic 4 both parts were 2010's and they were not impressive. 2000's had All stars tennis, racing, Riders 1 & 2, advance trilogy and more. It had the best Olympic games, it had Sonic X blah blah blah. 2010's had generations, mania and the movies. That's about it. Unless you loved the boom 3ds games which I would imagine you do not.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Sega still decided to officially support the Mania project, even if the development was by fans. Also, both All Stars racing games are from the 2010's. So the 2010's had Mania, Generations, Colours, All Stars racing, Racing transformed, Colours Ds. As far as console games go, that is already way better than anything in the 2000's.
That choice was so bad. It is one of the things I consider a low point.

@@TheRealMightyEmperor I like Generations
@@TheRealMightyEmperorThe story may not be special. But I think the game doesn't have an story in mind. And quite frankly, story has never been the series strongpoint anyways.
@@jaretco6423 It's not just the story that bothered me, but like I say in the video if there ever was a time to put some effort in, the anniversary with marvel styled cross over potential would be that game.

Yeah your right if they haven't changed the original design then sonic would've been in the grave by now.
It's easy to forget that original design now but... Yeah that would not have gone well.
@@alejandroaguilar2012Nah. I highly doubt that would have been the end of Sonic.
It wasn't all bad, but if you're like me and 2D/classic gameplay isn't for you and you greatly value a fun story that doesn't flanderize the characters then there wasn't a whole lot to get out of it
The best game for the most part was Mania, which like you say whilst good was still 2d at the end of the day.

Sadly, most of these could work if done right:
1. Sonic Generations:
- Have Tails and the other characters playable, except Robotnik and the other bosses, minus Shadow and Silver
- bring in classic versions of Knuckles, Amy and the Chaotix
- bring in Mighty, Ray, Nack, Bean and Bark, (both classic and modern versions)
2. Sonic Forces:
- Someone came up with the idea that Tails becomes Gadget’s mentor and I like the idea
- Remove Classic Sonic, he is not needed
- make Tails and Knuckles playable
- have Shadow be the protagonist, this type of game feels more like a Shadow story than a Sonic story, plus, Sonic got owned in the beginning, so after that, the story can focus on Shadow along with Knuckles and Tails.
- Make Infinite a better character
3. Sonic Lost World:
- Robotnik should be playable at least once since he is helping Sonic and Tails
- Tails acting more mature
- Knuckles not be treated like a joke
- Have Knuckles and Amy more Relevant in the story, or get rid of them altogether. It just feels pointless to have them both there if they’re only there for a few minutes.
-Make The Deadly Six more like their IDW incarnations
Good suggestions
Let's hope Sega doesn't make the same mistake again for Sonic like how they did with the 2010's.
As a matter of fact, Let's hope Sega/Sonic Team decides to take notes from the development process of Super Mario Brothers Wonder.
Let us hope.
I think they really treat the franchise really badly. They don't even advise or help writers when they are being murdered And they don't care about the character's arc, and end up pointlessly bringing them back as boss characters or NPCs.
Not to mention how they interrupted the development of Sonic Boom rise of lyric

it was hard being a fan of a franchise that humiliated themselves on a daily man was lockdown rough for the blue rat
Especially when the twitter team took pride in making fun of themselves just to survive. Tough times.
yeah, in the 2010s, sega really ignored pleasing their fans, and tried to please the critics. i think when you work on doing things people like instead of pleasing people who just generally could not be pleased, you come off with more successful games and stories.
Cleary critic pleasing did not help them. Chao garden return would be appreciated I am sure.
@@TheRealMightyEmperorI would love the Chao Garden to return. With modders showing what could added to the Garden to updated graphics for it I think the Chao Garden would be successful.

Yes Chao Garden Extended is great!
@@zenvariety9383 Sad that was the only new Chao content from Sega after all this time.
Management was an issue no doubt.
You have a good point here. A lot of the future will be determined by how much Sega will care.
Sega of japan hates Sonic
IDW is canon becuse Sonic mentioned IDW characters in Frontiers
It’s really funny how for the longest time the 2000s were considered the Dark Age for Sonic
Too a fair amount of people it still is.
Open World Sonic was not my first choice, but a lot of people wanted it.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor I guess. I haven’t seen that many people want it. If anything, it was Sega’s higher ups that wanted it.
It is funny that at least one member of the movie team worked on the CGI cutscenes of Shadow the Hedgehog.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor
Yeah that is funny, and I know that you're talking about the director, (Jeff Fowler,) because I've heard that he's the person who made the opening CG cutscene of the 2005 Shadow the Hedgehog spin-off game.
@@joeboosta6309 I hope they respect the character thanks to that history

Me too.
The industry changed to be a lot more cooperate than ever before. loot boxes, micro transactions, battle passes etc.

Most likely.
Yes, I agree that years between 2010 to 2017 is more like a dark age of Sonic similar to Crash and Spyro games that are released after the year 2000.
Considering Spyro has only gotten remakes he still isn't doing great
One name is mostly to blame : SAMMY.
Yuji naka got fires becauae he revealed hia salary to hia workers which sega didn't liked that he did it so they fired him
Satomi-san (SEGA's CEO) has admitted this when they took over Rovio (The Angry Birds developer). So yeah, what you say is true.
Wow. You hate to see it...
At the end of the day, criticism remains the same. Whether they were a SEGA badge or a SAMMY badge, the decisions made have been poor.
"Confident??", well, Sega used to be extremely "confident" about its Dreamcast with its intensive investment..................... and now how many young men have heard of it?
Rest in piece Dreamcast.

Silver and Blaze in Sonic X is all fan work. The series ended with it's third season.
I do agree for the most part I always thought forces was the symbol of everything that they shouldn't have done with the series play some people do say if you're out of idea and if Sega is out of ideas they always ask your fan is it right now they're making any better stuff than they are Kenworth for far lesser or no budget at all and also I do think this stuff should be pointed out
Yes
I wish Sega would handle Sonic just a tad bit better. I'm fine with what we have NOW but still.
Yeah
it's Sad, when Hollywood of all People are the Ones Who Renewed interest in Sonic.
Yeah, without them Sonic would be in a dark place
And yet I got more enjoyment from Sonic R than Forces (I have a video on that actually!)
while 2010 was mostly low budget I think 2008 though 2013 was pretty decent (mostly Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations, Sonic and the Black Knight, Sonic 4 Ep 1 and 2 and Sonic Lost World Wii U/PC where mediocre and Sonic Free Riders and Sonic Lost World 3DS sucks.)
The reason why Sonic games where low budgeted was because of mediocre Sonic Heroes, Sonic Riders, Sonic Rivals, Sonic Rivals 2, Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity where, Shadow the Hedgehog and Sonic and the Secret Rings being bad and Sonic 06 sucks hard (and I felt the hate for that game is warranted) and how Sonic Fanboys like Spax3 and Richard Kuta whined about Sally Acorn and the Freedom Fighters not being in the games and how characters like Shadow, Rouge, Omega, Silver, Blaze, Marine, the Chaotix and Cream are taking the spot light from Sonic (for Shadow's case in 06 IMO) and how Sega should just make a new 2D Sonic game.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor The real issue was the fact that Sega quit the console market (mostly because of the Sega Saturn which the negative stigma bleed into the Dreamcast) and made mediocre titles to bad titles in the 2000s (with the Sonic Advance Trilogy, the Sonic Rush series and Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Generations being the only shining hope.)
That and how the Fanbase acted at that time with voice actors, character design, recolors and rule 34 and how they where being compared to Chris-Chan (which from what I heard, the Sonichu comics brows more from Pokémon than Sonic,) Forces was that wake up call becuase Sega kept rushing games like Sonic 06 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric and that Sonic Forces was rushed due to how bad Rise of Lyric was and that with the Sonic Boom sub series, Sega went all in and got the joker card, and I think Sonic Forces ended up being lackluster because of how awful Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric was and that game was a wake up call for them to stop rushing games and Sonic Movie 1 was the coffee brewing (after the Ugly Sonic backlash) that Sonic is just as Iconic as Mario.
@@1upGaming1up
But then we'll have another Sonic frontiers situation instead.
Honestly, if there is one game that which direction should be taken it is Sonic Dream Team, a 3d Sonic game done mostly right, with potential for improvement.
I shared this video for total agreement.
Thank you! I am glad you agree!
You can blame yourself for the 2010's, that's what you get when you praise games like Sonic 06 and then wonder why you get games like Forces.
If you think anyone was praising Sonic 06 in the 2000's you can't have been there.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Sonic fans on twitter praised sonic 06 in the 2010's
hello there "The Mighty Emporerer" , i watched your video and it kind of reminded me of an other i watched earlier named as , "The Story of Sonic Colors" , particularly because when i arrived at a section from that video from 26:29 to 35:47 of the , and MAN not only did it very well explained what exactly is what did sonic team did that they ended up taking the franchise in a completely new direction that defined sonic for the 2010s , as well as very well explaining the context behind it in the section before that, but also that sonic's 2000s personality had been kept for japanese audiances while western fans had to deal with those stupid storylines in that period of time , i won't spoil you on any thing other than it might have to do with the writers probably taking anspiration from Adventures of sonic TV show from the 90s , i hope you take a look at the video as soon as possible
Sega should have let it's US Branch Takeover The Sonic Franchise, much like how Street Fighter had the Capcom USA Trademark.
HES BACK!!
Aww yeah :)
90's and 2000's had their bright spots. 2010's were the bad times. So hopefully Sonic keeps up the momentum
Don’t forget the LEGO’s!
Part of all those crossovers but yes lots of Lego
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Yessir!
Never forget the late '10s drought @@TheRealMightyEmperor
I also don't see the 2000's as a dark age now that the 2010's exist, but people even who watched this video still believe that.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor it's probably the Adventure 2 (overrated game) nostalgia blinding them combined with the fact many of them might have grown in the 90s, so they'd have the "it was better in the old days" kind of mindset
@EnclaveEmily Based on what they have said its more that the 2010 games a fire and all 2000's was rushed trash
“More production, leads to a better franchise” Releases Sonic 06 with no bug checks 😅
Less production = Sonic Boom. Difference is in the 2000's there was plenty more going on besides 06 even in that year alone.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor don't worry sonic boom will never return
Nice video you deserve more subs
Much appreciated, I try my best.
What if the Sonic series had retired after Generations? How'd the following years have looked like from our altered memories and experiences?
Well, there wouldn't have been anything new for Sonic. So Forces wouldn't have been made.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Sonic Mania wouldn't have been made, either.
💯 True. Sonic, unfortunately is in the hands of developers that don’t actually understand or realize the value of the gem they’re holding 💎 😢
Thankfully we get golden works from the fans fairly regularly
Would it hurt them to bring back adventure character development and put effort in game design and stories Sonic and the black knight was a wii title and it represents sonics character better than any 2010 games
Only with Frontiers were SEGA ok with adding back multiple characters, so anything more is uncertain.
Hell nah bro who the hell lost love for sonic generations?? That game is amazing on every level
Content gameplay soundtrack the only exception is the story
Sadly I disagree. Might make a video about it

So basically Meta Era Bad
I wouldn't call it good that is for sure.
the meta era had it's rises and downfalls but wasn't a perfect era for sonic
bad thing in meta era: sonic forces, sonic boom games including rise of lyiric, sonic the hedgehog 4 ep1,2,sonic free riders, sonic lost world that's the bad side about this game but that doesn't mean we didn't had good things from this era either:
good things in meta era: sonic colors, sonic generation, sonic all stars racing, sonic & sega all stars racing, sonic mania, sonic mania plus, team sonic racing, sonic dash,SEGA AGES Sonic The Hedgehog
Arcade game,sonic jump fever etc..
so the meta era wasn't too bad but wasn't great either.
Side acrolling Sonic needs to remain Pixel Art and 2D, Adventure/Modern Sonic needs to be 360 degree motion 3D, not 2D, not 2.5D.
Very tired of 2.5D in 3D Sonic games.
Oh yeah? Well they hated Rhythm Thief and Hero Bank more. Because Rhythm Thief has no sequel and Hero Bank hasn’t been localized! I doubt anybody here even knows what Hero Bank is!
Difference is Sonic is their mascot and most well known IP
@@TheRealMightyEmperor Oh. You’re right. But my point still stands!
It's been so long Mr Emperor! Missed your awesome reviews! Yeah you're right the performance hasn't been that great! Sonic Dreams was meh... It's only Superstars that was a success but yet.. SEGA hates their mascot they can't even begin to match with Nintendo

All droughts suck.
It's not better that sega treats their development team sonic team like garbage and they barely give them a lot time to develop sonic games Which is a lottery reasons why a lot of sonic games lack polish and have some minor glitches and its not sonic teams fault is sega's fault
In terms of the outcome it is "better", morally it is bad. But Sega is so poorly managed that the bad practise tends to yield better results

you know like what you saying actually you make lot of since Sega was so greedy and lazy that almost made their own mascot sonic die. because of that I think they want to catch up Nintendo success so badly that put all those things for sonic all of them are stale to me Sega doesn't see they care about sonic because all they want is money and fam but at least sega respect there fan made sonic stuff.
True. Sonic fans being allowed to do what they want is great and part of what keeps Sonic alive.

Sega Japan or Sega USA or Sega Europe that hated Sonic?
SEGA as a whole, the divisions do matter. The people at the top do.
I am confused what this all is this to hate sega and sonic now or what cuz u confused me
No. Like I say in the video, Sonic is now in a good place. But he wasn't before the movies and I want to highlight why. Before the days of Frontiers, people defended 2010 SEGA's handling of Sonic. My hope is if people understand how it was not good, they will not let it happen in the future.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor ohh ok
I wish I'd bought Sonic Superstars instead of Sonic Frontiers. The open world gameplay in Sonic Frontiers was just not what I'm used to, the whole game was nothing but boredom, annoyance, confusion and frustration. I actually liked Sonic Forces more.
Damn. Chasing the open world trend was not what Sonic needed, but I think I still enjoyed it more than forces (At least for the first 2 islands anyway). However, Sonic Forces is a shorter game so it is easier to play (Ironically, it being so short is still bad though)
Sega didn't or ever saved sonic. They barely used half their ass. If it weren't for the og fans and new. He would've been left for dead.
True

But I like your video, I just can't resist a chance to be contrarian about this stuff.
Yeah I hear people say that the future will be bright or that sonic should do better so it is subjective.
I don't actually disagree that new games still have problems, but they are a step up from what we got before. So hopefully they will improve.

again it's your opinion not ours we love frontiers and the IDW
If Xbox acquire Sega that will help Sonic get more resources and budget on the games that quality will come 1st
@@1upGaming1up what about the case of PlayStation there is hot lava mainly for not having many new games but rather resell the same game that there fanboys keep buying with a new thing slap on to it when it it could of been dlc or a patch update I'm still waiting for Naughty Dog to get there heads out of there assess to make a new Jak and Daxter not to mention Sucker Punch with Sly Cooper but unfortunately this PlayStation is more making games that feel like movies and shows rather than games themselves
@@joelbarraclough6689 Yeah, PlayStation is lacking games, no new Jak and Daxter and Sly Cooper and that they're milking Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted and The Last of Us and Spider-Man 2 is lackluster, Sony isn't doing too well right now I can get that.
Nintendo is doing better than Xbox and PlayStation, Games like Super Mario Bros.
@@TheRealMightyEmperor
Sega still decided to officially support the Mania project, even if the development was by fans.
Also, both All Stars racing games are from the 2010's. So the 2010's had Mania, Generations, Colours, All Stars racing, Racing transformed, Colours Ds. As far as console games go, that is already way better than anything in the 2000's.
