Your video is perfect, not intimidating, explains the basics. I’m in central California in a place called Seacliff so to not take advantage of all that free and clean ocean breeze would be silly. I used to walk my 3 toddlers to the beach, launch the plane and soar for hours while picnicking.

Fun video but please don't say the plane loses airspeed in a downwind turn. Unfortunately the downwind turn myth continues to be repeated all the time. Airspeed stays the same regardless of upwind, crosswind or downwing.. Only groundpseed changes

Yes. Torrey Pines is very famous - even i have heard of it! Here in New Zealand, especially around Dunedin where i live, there are many amazing cliffs and mountains suitable for slope soaring - but there is almost no one who is into it. I am yet to go flying with someone else in the air at the same time!
Thanks for the video, lots of useful information. I live in North Devon UK and have a similar coast to your coast. Often stood and watch the seagulls hanging above the cliffs, gently diving away, turning and what appears to be playing in the air; always been pretty envious. There is a guy not far from me cliff soaring and I've got the bug. Hoping to meet him soon to have a go at one of his gliders under a lot of supervision, then get one myself. Spoilt living by a cliffy seaside. Just subscribed to your channel and will be watching more videos. Hopefully I'll be joining those seagulls soon. Alan
Best of luck to you. You will find it very satisfying flying with the birds. Sometimes they will even form up on your wing if you are just gliding without the motor on. It is the best sort of flying in my opinion. It is also not that hard to make your own glider to begin with. For example, you can make a small light one without a motor so it is crashes its no drama. I am building one like this at the moment. Going to cost me about $10 for a 1m glider.
Enjoyed your video. Here is something for you to try. Add FPV to your glider. 20 dollar cam and 3.7v battery or go for a better FPV system with mushroom antenna and fly for a kilometer up and down the coast line or thermal over the land as well but this time flying out of normal sight, and as if you are inside the glider, feeling for the thermals. A whole new experience in glider flying if you have never tried it. Happy Flying!
Thanks for your comments. Sounds interesting. I am actually already looking into it - i mean the feasibility of long range fpv with a glider. I have an even bigger one which might be a good candidate for fpv flying.
Here at my local club in the UK the HK Phoenix 2000 is a very popular plane for sloping and flat field flying. Brilliant fun especially with flaps enabled.
Really enjoyed your video, doing much the same here in Oregon... Have an old vintage Hobie Hawk, 3 meter span, and T tail such as ASW-28-2.6M, although don't have your beautiful environment, which means someday have to get there... Cheers

+Ken Oath Good luck with you FPV. Slope soaring can be really enjoyable to get into - mostly because you can fly for an unlimited time just sailing on the wind. But it is also very good for when it is too windy for other types of flying - especially if you have a big, heavy sailplane. Spring time in Dunedin is very windy for about 3 months, and you are essentially grounded unless you can fly in strong winds.essentially Have fun.
It's just not fair you get to live in such a beautiful place. Close enuff to fly with Bruce ( XJET) cliffs for soaring.. blue-green water. I'm very jealous. We have a sea... Yet it's Brown unless you travel 40 to 60 miles out. We have wind but normally it only blows on the days your not needing it. And when it does it almost always a crosswind on the runway... We have a Beautiful State but it is huge and everything in the state is Over THERE>>>>>>>>>> miles from where you want to be.. ;lol (All PArody) but very nice video I must visit NewZealand one day
Well south island of new Zealand is all like that. No traffic. Desserted beaches. Clean water. I also Spearfish around below where this was filmed over the summer for fresh fish. Plenty of camp grounds if you want to do a tour.

I really like the ASW and it was great that you put extensions on the ailerons and elevator, I think that helps a lot because it does not have much control surface I just subscribed and am looking forward to many more of your videos Daniel
Hi. I am sorry i haven't done more videos. I've had a few in the works but i guess i have lost the passion for the sport, i think because i was always doing it by myself and it wasn't fun for me anymore. I even have a 3.2m jet glider i made from scratch and never flew, so that gives you an idea of how low my enthusiasm has gotten. I am intending on doing more flying and videos over the winter. I'm also working on a scratchbuilt Harrier.

Just foam board. It is quite expensive over here. Like $10 a sheet. We really are spoilt for choices of where you can slope soar here. I was at a cliff recently with this big glider, and at one point it just kept going up and i couldn't fly down faster than the wind was pushing it up. I didn't want to go too fast because it might rip the wings off. And every time it came down it speed up so much that it ballooned up again. It was getting about 150m above me and i actually thought i might loose it to the heavens. So i just had to dive straight down at hundreds of km per hour speed and risk it all. Finally i got it out over the ocean and levelled off very slowly to not exceed the G limit and i recovered. there were birds taking the thermal hundreds of meters up into the clouds.
That experience is going to follow you for a while. Experience and knowledge of the elements are what saved you. Imagine if you had it on film!@@PaulGarbettNZ

Flies so beautiful. What glider building plan do you suggest for a beginner? I am a skilled builder but have never flight a RC Glider. So the plane should fly calm and safe but should not be expensive to build. i think as a beginner i will do chrash often… ;-)
Hi. Just start with something small and light winds and work up. Maybe just order in a glider with motor which is less than 1meter. Use that till you get the hand of it. If you are making it yourself have say 1m or less span and don't put much curve on the airfoil to keep speed up.
No smaller models are fine. The bigger ones are more stable and turn more slowly, and so are very predictable in the air, but do a lot more damage when they land. Learn on something small over a little slope on fair winds.
Did you make a. Video about the mods to your asw 28? Looks like you put a film on the wing and made bigger control surfaces. I saw the air brake video.
Hi always turn away from the slope. turning towards the slope will suck the glider into the slope and crash some weight on the CG helps the glider to penetrate or fly better (heaver model) shame we done have ballast in the wings no more ( wing tubes on the CG for Ballast weight) glider Builder for nearly 30 years .

Ah that's what I thought as I heard the familiar beep in the background while transmitter was idle. Cool. I use the same radio/receiver combo to fly my small AXN powered glider (1290mm wingspan) but never did slope soaring. I think it's great fun though. You fly quite far out ay .. so you never had any range issues with the T6 ... it seems you trust it completely to fly your glider from that location. I never had range issues too (I am mentioning this as it seems that some people did have issues but probably due to broken or misconnected/badly placed antennas). I did flaperons on the rotary knob thanks to your video as well :-). I did change the stock Tx antenna with a 5dbi though, to enhance range, although I never had issues with the stock one. I have flown my AXN in 20mph winds ... it is challenging but so exciting. And on those windy days almost nobody dares to fly at my local club so it's more of a privilege hehhe. Sometimes I am a bit worried about losing the signal link when I fly a bit far out ... and I start thinking about getting a radio upgrade. But then again, why should I when I never had range issues? I also did ground range tests with T6/rb6 and had solid link up ta at least 250metres, a distance which should get more than that up in the air. Just one question, how do you set up your receiver antenna on your plane.. vertically or horizontally? Mine is attached horizontally and in line with the fuselage, and my Tx antenna pointed sideways parallel to the ground ( so also horizontal). I placed my rx antenna outside. Cheers and regards.
Yes, what I've done is taped the antenae into a vertical position inside the fuselage, and taped the receiver down also. I align the transmitter into the vertical position also, so they match. Never had any issues and I've flown it as high and far as I can see it, about 200m I guess. If you ever start losing control make sure that you are not pointing the antennae at the plane, as there is an area of low signal in that direction. Always have the antennae side on to the plane. I think you only need the receiver antanae on the outside if it is carbon fibre.
Yes, thanks for the tips for antenna placement. I was aware about the low signal area at the tip of the antenna. That's why I keep it horizontal and parallel with the radio, pointing sideways, that way it will never point at the plane, and I don't have to adjust it every time I fly, as movement will eventually wear out and snap the antenna. The less you touch it, the better.

Hi. The additions are small strips of foam board (from stationary shop - used for scratch building) that I have taped onto the elevator and ailerons for more control. Make sure they are lined up straight. They just extend the surfaces and deflect more air. See this video about 3mins for the exact locations. You may as well do the whole aileron on this plane, as they are very ineffective.
Hi there, did you strengthen the carbon spar bar? and i see it looks like you incresed the size of the ailerons and elevator as well?? otherwise nice video.
Yes that's right, the ailerons and elevator need to be expanded because most of the time you are gliding fairly slowly and need more control. Haven't touched the spar though. You do get quite a lot of flex if you pull up tightly.

Did the plane come like this or have you made changes because you find the stock set up wasn't performing ? +mikeyfrompiha Yes its a brilliant performer. Amazing glider especially in the strong wind. I recommend the 1500mah 4s battery. Its perfect. 3 cell just doesn't have enough power i think. I've added some extensions to the ailerons and elevator because they weren't giving enough response.
g'day Paul, tell me is it feasible to slope soar with only rudder/ elevator? My gliders only have those two responses,I would probably fly off the cliffs at raglan.. cheers Baz
Yes that would be fine. I'm assuming that you have it setup on 3 channels and there is plenty of dihedral to keep it level. Generally you want to keep the plane level for soaring to maximise lift, so rudder and elevator will do fine.
Thanks for some good tips in your video. I'm getting a Phoenix 1600 from Hobby King and I want to do some slope soaring with it. Not to be negative but I have to correct you, on an engine is an internal combustion power source and a motor is electric power source. I was a motorcycle mechanic for 20 years and it just bothers me when someone calls an electric motor an engine. No hard feeling Good Day to you.
I like to go engine boating from differing fishing spots but when I get near and don't want to scare the fish I turn on the small electric driven prop and switch to motor boating.

Yes, I enlarged the ailerons and the elevator because these weren't giving enough response. Besides, when you are gliding you need lots of control because you are not going very fast most of the time. Elevator is perfect now, but ailerons are still not as good as they could be.

+Multirotor Go The plastic is good yes. The wings are just foam though, which is fine and easy to repair. Get a 1500 4s for this plane - it is the perfect battery.

I learned how to fly an RC airplane with the Hobbyking BFG-1600. It's not a very efficient glider but it's nice, can't wait to try to fly it in a slope
Have you tried adjusting the centre of gravity? They prefer to be slightly nose heavy for slope soaring. Also, was there enough wind to keep it up in the air? Maybe the air was bumpy with turbulance?
Hmm. Sounds like you're doing the right thing then. Will it fly OK around the park etc? Do you have a different plane you can test for sloping? Maybe a smaller one till its sorted out.
Hi Paul once again, lie your videos, another way to learn without any daunting dangerous cliffs for beginners is to fly on a windy day in a flat field and just use power to get to height and practice, what other models have you used for slope soaring?

Hi. Just start with something small and light winds and work up. Maybe just order in a glider with motor which is less than 1meter. Use that till you get the hand of it. If you are making it yourself have say 1m or less span and don't put much curve on the airfoil to keep speed up.

No smaller models are fine. The bigger ones are more stable and turn more slowly, and so are very predictable in the air, but do a lot more damage when they land. Learn on something small over a little slope on fair winds.

Hi always turn away from the slope. turning towards the slope will suck the glider into the slope and crash some weight on the CG helps the glider to penetrate or fly better (heaver model) shame we done have ballast in the wings no more ( wing tubes on the CG for Ballast weight) glider Builder for nearly 30 years .

Can you slope sour without ailerons?
Yes. No problems sloping on a 3-channel using just the rudder. You are limited of course in the maneuvers you can perform.

Ah that's what I thought as I heard the familiar beep in the background while transmitter was idle. Cool. I use the same radio/receiver combo to fly my small AXN powered glider (1290mm wingspan) but never did slope soaring. I think it's great fun though. You fly quite far out ay .. so you never had any range issues with the T6 ... it seems you trust it completely to fly your glider from that location. I never had range issues too (I am mentioning this as it seems that some people did have issues but probably due to broken or misconnected/badly placed antennas). I did flaperons on the rotary knob thanks to your video as well :-). I did change the stock Tx antenna with a 5dbi though, to enhance range, although I never had issues with the stock one. I have flown my AXN in 20mph winds ... it is challenging but so exciting. And on those windy days almost nobody dares to fly at my local club so it's more of a privilege hehhe. Sometimes I am a bit worried about losing the signal link when I fly a bit far out ... and I start thinking about getting a radio upgrade. But then again, why should I when I never had range issues? I also did ground range tests with T6/rb6 and had solid link up ta at least 250metres, a distance which should get more than that up in the air. Just one question, how do you set up your receiver antenna on your plane.. vertically or horizontally? Mine is attached horizontally and in line with the fuselage, and my Tx antenna pointed sideways parallel to the ground ( so also horizontal). I placed my rx antenna outside. Cheers and regards.
Yes, what I've done is taped the antenae into a vertical position inside the fuselage, and taped the receiver down also. I align the transmitter into the vertical position also, so they match. Never had any issues and I've flown it as high and far as I can see it, about 200m I guess. If you ever start losing control make sure that you are not pointing the antennae at the plane, as there is an area of low signal in that direction. Always have the antennae side on to the plane. I think you only need the receiver antanae on the outside if it is carbon fibre.
Yes, thanks for the tips for antenna placement. I was aware about the low signal area at the tip of the antenna. That's why I keep it horizontal and parallel with the radio, pointing sideways, that way it will never point at the plane, and I don't have to adjust it every time I fly, as movement will eventually wear out and snap the antenna. The less you touch it, the better.

Hi. The additions are small strips of foam board (from stationary shop - used for scratch building) that I have taped onto the elevator and ailerons for more control. Make sure they are lined up straight. They just extend the surfaces and deflect more air. See this video about 3mins for the exact locations. You may as well do the whole aileron on this plane, as they are very ineffective.

Yes that's right, the ailerons and elevator need to be expanded because most of the time you are gliding fairly slowly and need more control. Haven't touched the spar though. You do get quite a lot of flex if you pull up tightly.

+mikeyfrompiha Yes its a brilliant performer. Amazing glider especially in the strong wind. I recommend the 1500mah 4s battery. Its perfect. 3 cell just doesn't have enough power i think. I've added some extensions to the ailerons and elevator because they weren't giving enough response.

Yes that would be fine. I'm assuming that you have it setup on 3 channels and there is plenty of dihedral to keep it level. Generally you want to keep the plane level for soaring to maximise lift, so rudder and elevator will do fine.
Thanks for some good tips in your video. I'm getting a Phoenix 1600 from Hobby King and I want to do some slope soaring with it. Not to be negative but I have to correct you, on an engine is an internal combustion power source and a motor is electric power source. I was a motorcycle mechanic for 20 years and it just bothers me when someone calls an electric motor an engine. No hard feeling Good Day to you.
Phoenix planes are horrible. Those blow moulded plastic fuselages have no place in RC. Only good for kids toys.

Did you enlarged the control surfaces? Why? and how is the result?
Yes, I enlarged the ailerons and the elevator because these weren't giving enough response. Besides, when you are gliding you need lots of control because you are not going very fast most of the time. Elevator is perfect now, but ailerons are still not as good as they could be.

+Multirotor Go The plastic is good yes. The wings are just foam though, which is fine and easy to repair. Get a 1500 4s for this plane - it is the perfect battery.

Just a bit more control that way. It increases the power of the ailerons for aerobatics etc.

Have you tried adjusting the centre of gravity? They prefer to be slightly nose heavy for slope soaring. Also, was there enough wind to keep it up in the air? Maybe the air was bumpy with turbulance?
It was a smooth windy day. The cog was slightly nose heavy but it wouldn’t slope. I tried putting down the flaps but it just made it slower.
Hmm. Sounds like you're doing the right thing then. Will it fly OK around the park etc? Do you have a different plane you can test for sloping? Maybe a smaller one till its sorted out.

Hi Paul once again, lie your videos, another way to learn without any daunting dangerous cliffs for beginners is to fly on a windy day in a flat field and just use power to get to height and practice, what other models have you used for slope soaring?

Mostly just used for landing in a small space. Can also be helpful in altering the glide characteristics. For example generate more / less lift.
