  • @Grant_Ferstat

    I really liked the sound of the Belle Epoch but the internal preamp trim really changes your overall gain structures. Personally I think if the preamp trim externally it'd make it easier because it wasn't really a set and forget thing for me, it was very dependent on what other drives and boosts etc were on my board.

    Brendan, stellar playing man. Great review of the echoplex and comparing to the real thing GREAT job! Echoplex really does it for me. The caltlinbred is really good as well. I've been scouring youtube ville for comparisons. 1st of was El Capistan, but price point and pedal board real estate have me leaning to the MXR. Your demo's have put it over the top for me. Inspired playing. keep it up

    Great Demo, I have a Belle Epoch and I've repaired an EP-4, I think I will buy the Echoplex pedal as it sounds and behaves a lot more like the real thing than the Belle does. The Belle just doesn't have enough headroom and the mix control is way too sensitive to run in front of an amp for me. Thanks for the great demo!

      Thanks, Scott! Not to complicate things, but I’ve rrrealy been enjoying the UAFX Starlight lately. The preamp and tape splices are ridiculously convincing. You get the best DMM emulation I’ve ever played in a pedal as a bonus too. I didn’t get to spend too much time with the Dunlop but would be interesting in comparing them.

    The Dunlop sounds best to me. It's hard to believe that ppl are voting 5 seconds of low dark echoes from the epoch over the lush sounds of the Dunlop and the old echoplex. Very nice demo... thought is was an advertisement at first.

      EGG-ZACKLY. I currently own the Dunlop, the Belle, and an H&K Replex. The Belle E would be great if not for that awful preamp. It sounds boxy, all low mids, no highs or lows. It also gets considerably louder when you turn it on. Call me quazy, but I don't care for it.
      The Dunlop is awesome. Nice and bright. I don't use its preamp. I occasionally will use my JOYO Rated Boost to pump up the bottom end, to capture some of the Replex sound. The Replex is the one to beat if you're into preamp sound (it's probably the best delay of the three, overall). It has a tube Echoplex preamp (EP-1) in it. It sounds big (but can be a bit too dark for some things - a problem the Dunlop never has).
      Keep in mind too, if you (all of you reading this) use your delay before distortion the darker your delay sound the muddier your sound. Brighter is better. I'm not sure I don't actually prefer my Hardwire delay for that application, because of its brightness.

    • @Blueguitar007
      @Blueguitar007 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@totallyunmemorable I have the Xotic EP boost but frankly haven't put that with the Dunlop on the board yet as I need to make a smaller board for home use as I don't gig much now. There is some confusion as the Dunlop supposedly uses the Echoplex preamp on the "echoes" but not the "dry signal" so does adding an Dunlop EP boost or Xotic (or other ) EP boost before it make it "too preampy". I actually asked Dunlop this and they didn't know.

    200 bucks for the MXR vs 1800 for the TTE. Add a tap tempo for 30 bucks. The Bello sounds brighter and clearer to my ears but then again I love the tape age feature on the MXR. Carbon Copy - Analog Drlay (bucket brigade chipset aka "BBD").
      Darker, grittier.
      EP-103 - Tape Delay (digital emulation of the old Maestro Echoplex EP-3 that used real tape).
      Can go from pristine clarity to that classic tape delay modulation ("wow and flutter") that happens when tape gets old.
      Very different animals. Get both! I always have one proper analog delay and one tape-style delay (or a straight up digital delay) on the board.

    Some good advice for anyone thinking of getting this or that has this pedal. Know that it has some special power requirements. You cannot use a 9 volt battery to operate this pedal. You open up the back and there is no battery hookup. It's chalk full of components taking up the space that the battery normally resides in this sized pedal, you know the regular boss, MXR's of the World. The Echoplex was designed for high headroom. While it does operate at 9 volts DC power, not 18 mind you, it runs at 250mA, not 100mA, I repeat not 100maA! This means you must use the cheap adapter that comes with the pedal, or another power supply that has this power rating.
    I have the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 plus and I spent an hour today figuring out why it wasn't working when I was plugging it in. First it got no power from the Voodoo, but weird it did from the supplied power adapter. I was getting pissed. I was thinking something was wrong with my Voodoo or the pedal. Then I recalled reading the Echoplex manual and there was some weirdness regarding the power requirements. I got the Voodoo manual out and re-read the Echoplex user manual and also did an online search as well, on the Voodoo chatboards. What I discovered today is that you have to use either output 5 or 6 on the Voodoo as these outputs run at 9 volts 250mA, while outputs 1-4 run at 9 volts 100mA. This with the dipswitches in the normal positions.
    100mA is normal and sufficient to power most pedals, all of my other pedals as matter of fact, but not the bitchin Echoplex. It runs at 250mA and has higher headroom. I read somewhere that internal components in it actually bump up the 9 volts you supply to 20 volts for high headroom to preserve and keep artifacts from clipping. Nice!. Once I plugged it into output 5 it worked like a charm! Stoked. Pedal sounds so fucking good and I'm ripping up Bytor and the Snowdog and other Rush songs with it.
    So just to recap, remember if you can't get the fucker to work it's because you most likely have a power supply running at 100mA and you need 250mA. If you are trying the pedal out at GC or another store, make sure you are using the correct power or it won't get any lights going and or it'll have blinking lights and make a weird pulsating noise basically telling you something is wrong.

    Not a fair comparison when the Dunlop is played without the Dunlop Echoplex preamp. That preamp makes all the difference, IMO. When heard together, they are hard to beat. Dunlop probably should have put them together in a single pedal to begin with and they wouldn’t have lost so much business to competitors.

    • @BrendanMowat

      @@BrendanMowat You misunderstood my comment. I was NOT referring to comparing the Dunlop EP-3 to the orginal Echoplex tape unit of 60s fame. I was referring to how the Dunlop EP-3 gets compared alone (without the EP-1 Preamp) to the Belle Epoch and the El Capistan. Dunlop made a great demo years ago with the EP-3 and EP-1 in front of it, just like the original Echoplex design. The importance of the original Echoplex preamp was not lost on the designers of the Belle Epoch and El Capistan, either. That’s why, IMO, the EP-3 alone up against 2 other pedals that have that preamp circuit in them, is not an apples to apples comparison. I think the Dunlop EP-3 with the EP-1 in front of it, sounds amazingly close to the original tape unit. In this demo, the EP-3 alone sounds darn good, but add the EP-1 and it’s even way better!

    • @BrendanMowat
      @BrendanMowat  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I didn’t misunderstand; I just disagreed with your analysis of the video’s apparent fairness. I’m aware of the preamp or absence thereof in all of the pedals and chose to compare the delay with the repeats on the Echoplex. The El Capistan does not have an EP-style preamp nor is it featured in this video. Also, this video does not claim to analyze preamps or be all encompassing.
