    Thank you for sharing! I have been trying to decide between the Echoplex, and the Belle Epoch, and the tap tempo had me leaning this way. Your demo, & explanation were helpful, & I am getting an EP, with the tap straight away!

      @LeFeversAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! I agree, there are so many demos of this doing blues solos and dad rock. Honestly that goes for almost any pedal, guitar, or amp demo on TH-cam. I do not know why.

      @@LeFeversAudio it's true as hell. "Dad rock" sums it up exactly. I almost didn't like it until i saw your video then i bought one. I hope you make more demos i will too if i get anymore cool pedals.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@irelandtatum3300 Do it. Yeah I don't know why the default for TH-cam demo'ers is 1960's-1970's guitar solos, and they almost never play rhythm or chords or an actual song somebody might play, just pentatonic noodling. There are a * couple * of more ambient TH-cam channels (Chords Of Orion is fun) but could certainly stand to be more.

    Bought this pedal to reproduce Classic Van Halen guitar tones, but after hearing your beautiful playing of "clean ambiance," around 8:35 I'm excited to hear what else it can do.

    Some good advice for anyone thinking of getting this or that has this pedal. Know that it has some special power requirements. You cannot use a 9 volt battery to operate this pedal. You open up the back and there is no battery hookup. It's chalk full of components taking up the space that the battery normally resides in this sized pedal, you know the regular boss, MXR's of the World. The Echoplex was designed for high headroom. While it does operate at 9 volts DC power, not 18 mind you, it runs at 250mA, not 100mA, I repeat not 100maA! This means you must use the cheap adapter that comes with the pedal, or another power supply that has this power rating.
    I have the Voodoo Labs Pedal Power 2 plus and I spent an hour today figuring out why it wasn't working when I was plugging it in. First it got no power from the Voodoo, but weird it did from the supplied power adapter. I was getting pissed. I was thinking something was wrong with my Voodoo or the pedal. Then I recalled reading the Echoplex manual and there was some weirdness regarding the power requirements. I got the Voodoo manual out and re-read the Echoplex user manual and also did an online search as well, on the Voodoo chatboards. What I discovered today is that you have to use either output 5 or 6 on the Voodoo as these outputs run at 9 volts 250mA, while outputs 1-4 run at 9 volts 100mA. This with the dipswitches in the normal positions.
    100mA is normal and sufficient to power most pedals, all of my other pedals as matter of fact, but not the bitchin Echoplex. It runs at 250mA and has higher headroom. I read somewhere that internal components in it actually bump up the 9 volts you supply to 20 volts for high headroom to preserve and keep artifacts from clipping. Nice!. Once I plugged it into output 5 it worked like a charm! Stoked. Pedal sounds so fucking good and I'm ripping up Bytor and the Snowdog and other Rush songs with it.
    So just to recap, remember if you can't get the fucker to work it's because you most likely have a power supply running at 100mA and you need 250mA. If you are trying the pedal out at GC or another store, make sure you are using the correct power or it won't get any lights going and or it'll have blinking lights and make a weird pulsating noise basically telling you something is wrong.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Good point - it didn't even occur to me to mention the battery thing because it's been a decade since I used a battery in a pedal. Most or all intense digital delays can't run on batteries. But yes - make sure to run it from an adapter or from a high power outlet like the two on the Voodoo Labs supply.

      Ordered this pedal online earlier today and was unaware of the unusual power requirements. I am glad that I ready your post. Thanks so much for sharing with the YT Community.

I had forgotten about long pressing hte vol. knob to adjust the tape decay, so thank you very much for that reminder. I might add, also. that I actually prefer the Echoplex over the Carbon Copy. Thanks! You know, it’s probably still top five for me… I have since switched it out for a Strymon El Capistan, which is very similar but gives you more control over the tape age and all that stuff. That’s the only reason I went to that one, they sound quite similar otherwise.

    Great video Matt!! So from the last time we spoke.. I stated I was going to keep my EHX Cathedral and pair it with a Strymon Blue Sky... well... that didn't happened.. haha.. I ended up selling the Cathedral and got myself a Strymon Blue Sky and also went jackpot to an Eventide Space which now I pair the Blue Sky with the Space which the amount of Reverb created is massive, especially when I run in stereo. I however do regret selling my Cathedral as I loved that pedal so much but I am building another smaller board which I might end up getting it again.. We shall see.. Cheers mate!! Love your videos!

    Good video. It's annoying that the sustain isn't that great, considering a real Echoplex EP-3 could have really long repeats. Just check out John Martyn - Small Hours (1978) on TH-cam as proof. Shame, was hoping this pedal was the 'one'.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I wouldn't mind having some more sustain on it... it's plenty for my purposes usually but there are limitations if you try to go really long.

  • @emreemre369
    @emreemre369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice demo! the one thing holding me back getting this rather than El Cap or others is that the repeats seem too hard-hitting, like its going to mess with your playing or distracting from it. Maybe volume down can handle that to a degree, but as I am not sure, repeats seem too well-defined around the edges - at least the initial repeat. And I am a tape guy definitely not an analog delay lover.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hmm, you might be right. I"m guessing the tape age knob would affect that a bit, and as you said the volume would affect it for sure, but there aren't any controls to * radically * change the character of the repeats. I like a fairly audible, noticeable delay repeat but that's just a matter of taste - and I have definitely been in situations where I had to back off the volume on this pedal because it was too forward.

    • @emreemre369
      @emreemre369 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@LeFeversAudio Care to check how much the tape age knob effects that sometime? Would be good info IMHO.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I've actually sold mine recently, but you can hear the maximum tape age setting at about 7:05 in the video. The repeats do get less crisp but there's so much saturation and warble I'm not sure it'd be worth the tradeoff...

    If you hold the tap tempo switch down does it go into self-oscillation mode?

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not that I'm aware of. I think you have to crank the Sustain knob past 3 o'clock to make it do that.

    Hey Matt,What's that little thing you use for fixation between mxrtap and delay? I've noticed that the tap is very small, so with just velcro tape it wont Last Long right?

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Oh, I'm just using industrial-strength Velcro on the Tap, it works fine. Definitely go with official Velcro brand though, the cheap knockoff velcro is nowhere near as good.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! What would tap tempo even really do on a reverb, I wonder? At any rate, here is what I found for setting up the Strymon switch:
      www.strymon.net/faq/how-do-i-set-my-favorite-tap-to-be-used-as-a-tap-tempo-switch/
      ...but it doesn't really say whether a switch from another manufacturer would work the same or not. So I'm not sure - sorry!

    how is this compared to the flashback tapedelay mode? really having a hard time picking between the two. I kinda like the idea that the flashback has more options but I really like tape delay as well so if the sound difference is huge ill opt for the echoplex help please

    • @Senira322
      @Senira322 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh and i dont really mind not having tap tempo btw so that's not an issue

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Honestly if tap tempo isn't a factor, the Flashback is more versatile. I thought the tape mode on that one sounded amazing. One downside to the Echoplex is you can't really dial out the warbly modulation stuff completely, whereas you can get the Flashback tape mode sounding pretty clean. If I didn't care about tap I'd have stuck with the Flashback probably.

      The MXR tap is just for the Echoplex, the DD-20 has its own built in (and I think Boss tap pedals are a different polarity or something anyway).

    Hi Matt. Great video. I bought this early on and am disappointed. I bought this before I knew what a dotted 8th note was. Nowhere on you tube does anyone explain dotted 8th note creation with this pedal.

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There really isn't a good way to do dotted-eighth notes on this, or any other pedal that doesn't have a dotted-eighth note feature. The larger delays (DD-20, Nemesis, Timeline) have settings for that, and a couple of smaller delays (TC Flashback, I think maybe the Boss DD-7?) have it too. Without a dedicated switch or setting for it, you would have to somehow tap in the dotted eighth beat, which requires a mastery of timing and note subdivisions that I personally don't have. Sorry!

    • @douginny
      @douginny 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@LeFeversAudio Yup. I agree. Ugh. Another pedal bust. I did see a vid to tap it out using a rhythm 1-2: 1-2-3. But this seems not practical at a show. I am trying for the Gilmour delay so am thinkimg the T-Rex Replica. Do u have any suggestions? Trex is close it $400!

    • @LeFeversAudio
      @LeFeversAudio  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah tapping a dotted rhythm is beyond me. I'm not familiar with the T-Rex, my favorite non-expensive ways to do dotted eighth were TC Electronic Flashback 2 (that's what I'm using for that intro song on all my videos) and the Boss DD-20. Now I have a Source Audio Nemesis and just use that, but that's more getting up into the $250+ mega delays.

    • @douginny
