I NEVER know where you're going to go! This was a great explanation of what makes this song and especially this combination of artists so thrilling. It's more fun than ever when you bust out the guitar.... excellent!

I've never tired of this song and I never will because it's perfect in every way. Your face listening to them sing is so precious, there's so much joy in good music. Without it life would suck.

Bill's instantly recognizable classic great bass vocal and Jennifer's fantastic unique vocals this is a perfect mix of male female vocals together..complementing each other brilliantly! One of those massive hits so fabulously beautifully written and arranged that it stuck in your head. I remember it in heavy rotation on the radio in the 80s...you couldn't escape it. Thanks for the trip back into the 80s! Excellent analysis! 😎🎼🎶🎵🇨🇦

Jennifer Warnes is one of the most unappreciated pop singers of our generation. Just a powerhouse who never got her due. Linda Ronstadt always got the run in the 70’s and 80’s but JW was right there with her. These sappy duets are what she’s best known for, but her catalog is much deeper. A tremendous singer who deserves more attention from the masses.

I worked at a movie theater in Greenbelt Maryland in 1987 when the movie Dirty Dancing came out, and this song became ingrained in my mind and even this many years later, just hearing it transports me back in time to summer 1987 (when I was 18 and my last summer before joining the Army).
It's magical how music can do that.

.... Be still my Heart.... It's Bill Medley..... 😊💛.... This is such a great dance tune. ...it has a great beat , a natural progression that just works. 💃🏼💃🏼...as you did a great job explaining that!!
Yes, she had such a vocal range ..... and this song was meant to have these two collaborate on it. .... You always surprise, Dr Fil...... Which is in and of itself " a treat ". .... Smiles from across the Pond, ..... 💃🏼😊☺️🎼🎵🎶

I went to my Music Appreciation Class and saw the song and at first thought it would be schmarmy. But with Professor Fil, schmarmy is never in his curriculum. And he is able to weave in human interaction into a musical piece that I never cared for but have to admit is a masterclass in talent. Thanks for explaining these things to us, and never need to apologize for your videos. They are much appreciated.

Hi Fil! Dirty Dancing! Some of the best music came from that movie! Just a perfect song for that time! That music made us all want to dance! Ok I have to say it...You don’t put baby in the corner! The music, and dancing were what we loved at that time! Patrick could really make us all feel we could do this! So glad you decided to do the music from this iconic movie! I watched it so many times! You literally couldn’t sit still with this soundtrack!

Absolutely amazing explanation of this song Fil!!! Listening to you brings back memories of early days of MTV when I use to really follow rock and pop and when yo could watch quality songs and with quality programs unlike today . Your Chanel is the only one that I follow and look forward listening to your new song or artist analysis! I am hoping you would analyze the most underrated video song called “ a million years they dream “ by Alphaville , the video of that song in my opinion is the best video of the pop song that was ever made and that even die hard fans somehow missed it and very few know about that song ! Thank you for your amazing analysis and lessons 🙏

I am so happy Fil "did" this song. I was in Switzerland during this period (Radio vierundzwanzig, Radio 24) Radio 24 was the big station in Zurich, they played it constantly. I am soon to be 66 and not at all embarrassed to say I just loved "Dirty Dancing". So sad we lost Patrick Swayze so early ( born August 18, 1952 - September 14, 2009) Just 2 years older than myself. Watching one of Fil's analysis is a bit like going to school, I am learning. I wish my ear was good enough to tell just want drum pieces are being played, and why played at that time. Liked the song, Oh, was this a "Top of The Pops" performance (I think I see the logo). Always a good show from Top Of The Pops. Thanks Fil.

I loved your analysis of the importance of dynamics in both this and all compositions. You affirmed what I believed I also heard in your mention of and playing the "call and response" example on your guitar. You provided a wonderful explanation of both what made the song and the artists involved in creating it so successful. I truly love your analysis videos and this is no exception...fab job!

One of my favorite albums is "Famous Blue Raincoat". Jennifer Warnes singing songs by Leonard Cohen. One of my favorite TV specials was "Black and White Night" which was a concert by Roy Orbison with lots of famous people backing him (Elvis Costello, Tom Waits ,Springsteen, etc) and his background vocalists were kd Lang, Bonnie Raitt, and Jennifer Warnes.

Thanks for being the next step in the rehabilitation of this song (for me, anyway). The way you go in depth into the structure of the composition makes me more ready to Listen to it again. (As I see others here have commented, the radio tried its very best to kill the song back in the day.)
As "step one of the rehabilitation" has a link to music in it, I'll hide it away in a "reply".

"Step One" was *Panzerballett* (who seem to now be either dead or on hiatus, sadly). They did a great cover (with a bit of krass humour, I suppose, which might be inappropriate) - and you make me realise more fully that the reason they could produce a cover like is _because_ it's such a great song (giant shoulders to hop up onto). th-cam.com/video/ZAHrIOWpfIE/w-d-xo.html
Some people seem to think they do spoofs of songs, (hopefully that's not finally, "did" spoofs ... ), but to me it always seems they choose songs they respect and admire, and just jazz them up a bit. (And metal them too - where the krassing normally comes in.) Not everyone's cuppa, but I love Panzerballett. And they made me listen up for this song, so the krassing didn't do it any harm in at least this one case?

    • @sicko_the_ew
      @sicko_the_ew 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Ah!! Ich freue mich (?) !!! Did a quick search on TH-cam for Panzerballett (I'm subscribed and there's no activity there), and who other than *Marco Minnemann* is talking of their upcoming album!! th-cam.com/video/i7iY0rCCueg/w-d-xo.html
So in a somewhat indirect way, you've made my day, Fil! :D (I'd just given up all hope, so would not have looked if not reminded).

Also, singing to a backing track when your vocal is the first thing up is one of the most stressful things in the world to me. I'm already nervous, I feel like I can hear my own heartbeat, and I'm so afraid of missing my come-in point. It's like playing jump rope when you you have to come in while the rope is already going!

When ever i hear his beautiful song, i immediately think of Johnny and Baby, and 'Dirty Dancing' I have seen that movie many times! Rip Patrick Swayze, this one's for you! Filip your demonstration of the riffs and what they mean, as a parent asking a child what he or she was doing, was brilliant, it made a lot of musical sense, loved it!

I'm glad you did this song. I know it doesn't fit into the "guitar" and "band" categorie but this is such an inspiring and well written song.
And aah the resurgence of the alto sax in the 80's. Not since the 50's.
Another great song of the 80's was Dan Hartman's "Second Nature".

As great as they sing, their performance skill sold the song. I don't know much about Jennifer Warnes as much as I do about the absolutely great, Bill Medley.
Fil, I really like the split-screen format you're using here. As always, the depth of your musical knowledge is amazing.

I agree with you Jeff Stumpf. Everything Fil says is correct but in addition their performance really sells the song. They make it seem they are special to each other and it goes so well with the movie. It almost didn't get made. Jennifer's first reaction was that the song wasn't going to be a hit. Her husband said if she got to sing with Bill, a favorite of hers and have fun it would be worth it. Bill almost didn't want to do it. Turned down several offers because he had promised his wife he'd be home when their baby was born. Fortunately for musical history (a Grammy for them for a duet) the baby was born in time. The official video of the song is interesting too.

The last song played for every school dance I ever attended 🙄. I’m going to go ahead and tell you, Fil, I clicked on this because I immediately thought “what the hell is he thinking!” And of course because you’ve shown me many other things I wouldn’t otherwise listen to and shown me their value...and damn it...I may have to watch this again to take in what you’ve tried to teach me!
(Still hoping you’ll get around to “Big Head Todd and the Monsters” and “Big Wreck”.)

Whow - that was really thrilling! A song I heard thousands of times, even because of the movie (OMG, how I was fall in love with "Baby" Jennifer Grey) and beside this one of my fave female singers, "The Hunter" from Jennifer Warnes ist IMHO one of the best albums ever made, because of her fantastic voice, the songs and the outstanding well production/mix of it.
Funny sidenote: a lot of friends I had in this time and later which were very hard technofans owned "The Hunter" - just for testing the sound of there music systems how the bass works, because of the superb soundquality!
Thx for this very special analysis, I enjoyed it pretty much!
    Best regards from Germany

I agree, incredible lyrics, music, tempo, dynamics, the performance of the artists. They make an excellent duet. May I suggest a duet with Sarah Brightman and Andre Broceli? The best with them is You take My Breath Away. Was on TH-cam but copyright issues, I can't see it in the US. Live is incredible.

Hi, Fil! I love music! ❤ I don't know anything about it. WoW! I wanted to play the drums, but my dad said "girls don't play drums"! Soooo! But I enjoy listening to you, or maybe watching you! 😉 Yep! that was a flirt across the pond! Is that how to say it? I was and still am a country girl, Your music is more rock and roll.
But I love it when you do some "oldies" Thanks Fil ❤

Another enjoyable analysis. I would like to hear you analyze Karen Capenter. Try to pick an early one where she is playing drums as well, like from the early 70's. She took kit lessons from a Jazz drummer early on, and it real shows in her playing. I think her and Richard were one of the first to overdub their own vocal's with harmonies in recording sessions as well. Not so easy to do, in the last 60's.

What gr8 vocals mating....it’s hard to get two vocalist that compliment each other like this with overtones...yes it was played to death, and so was the movie! I wasn’t in to this much. Give me Ozzy and Randy and Van Halen and Dokken, and do u remember a guy named Vinnie Vincent? Man I miss so many of the huge musicians in my life...Joe Cocker....what a man and vocalist! Yeah Jennifer has a huge vocal range...just nails it! I wish u could of heard me back in the sixties and seventies. I had a huge range and power vocals. It was gr8 being the song writer, lead vocalist and lead guitar player for all my bands! It was a gr8 time!

A very insightful breakdown of this arrangement and performance. All the way through the video I was waiting for you to mention that Jennifer "wrote" this song, as well as the other movie hit you mentioned, Up where we belong, and is really more well known for that than she is for her singing talents.

    • @beachgirl4583
      @beachgirl4583 4 ปีที่แล้ว

She didn’t write it. Is that why you used quotations around “wrote”? She didn’t write “Up Where We Belong,” either.

Superb breakdown once again! You know, another reason I thought they used Bill was that he was so big in the early 60's, which is when the movie time took place. Also, there seemed to be a nod to the Wall of Sound, which Bill was the male voice that is so linked to that period.

Great as usual. Love your attitude to music. Have you thought of Joe Tex and I Gotcha? Maybe the update with Rachelle Rak. One other work by Thelma Houston and Pressure Cooker some of the best studio musicians--Tom Scott for sax and I will leave the rest for you. It was recorded direct-to-disk which was some of the best records back in the '70s. My age is showing. The records we're 2 to 3 times more expensive than a standard record album.

I'll never forget the time I saw Bill Medley and Jennifer Warnes on tour with Slayer in the 80s. They would come out and join Slayer for a extra heavy rendition of Angel Of Death at the end of the show.
    😀🤘
