  • Petrol Revolt take the fantastic MG Maestro Turbo and Rover 220 Turbo for a drive on track.
With practically the same suspension set up as the mid nineties Rover 220 cup cars, which was a support series to the Touring cars, the Rover 220 Turbo coupe / Tomcat turbo is mightily impressive. The Maestro Turbo on track, is, well, a Maestro - its a delightful car!
But stay tuned to watch the drag race, the Maestro doesnt go down without a fight!
When released in 1988, the ultra cool and retro MG Maestro Turbo styled by tickford was faster 0-60 than the then current Porsche, Lamborghini, Aston Martin and Ferrari. Perhaps thats why Jeremy Clarkson described the Maestro Turbo as “its like your mother (stock Maestro), but in a boob tube”.
505 units were made back in the day, but now due to breakage, corrosion and often being crashed, its very difficult to find an MG Maestro Turbo for sale, let alone in as good a condition as our Time warp example.
The Maestro Turbo gave way to its younger brother, the Rover 220 Turbo in the early 1990’s
More commonly known as the Tomcat Turbo, when Rover modernised the range and developed the 200,400,600 and 800 series
The Honda chassis derived Rover 220 Coupe Turbo was faster top speed than an Escort Cosworth, and with limited traction control, also gained a reputation as being hard to keep on the road.
We review what its like to drive and experience these forgotten and lesser seen in the wild British Leyland relics. But spoiler alert - these Uber cool machines are nothing short of being totally amazing!
REMEMBER to subscribe to don´t miss the next Epidide and future series!! More fun in the MG Maestro Turbo and Rober 220 Turbo to come! and hit the 🔔

I had MG Maestro 2.0 efi and a MG Montego Turbo in the 90s. I fitted shocks and 2" lowered springs supplied by Moto Build of Middlesex. These kits totally transformed the handling, also I upped the boost on the Turbo, it would give a standard Cossie a run for its money.

The white Motobuild MG Maestro Turbo on TH-cam would give a Cossie more than a run for its money with its 405 Bhp.

I had a montego turbo in 1989 too my friend, i wish I had looked into the handling like you did as it was a handful... not a car I enjoyed in the corners,I had an SRi Cavalier before it and that was much more of a planted ride, but my god for the time it was fast.
I too upped the boost with a simple bleed valve mod to around 175 bhp and as I found out ,twice....it would live with a standard Cossie...much to my delight and the frustration of there drivers! The torque steer when boost came in did make it feel like an animal....loved that car.

Have to take my hat off for you taking this to a track rather than driving like a tool on public roads.

The 220 chassis was a hand in hand collaborative partnership between Rover and Honda. Actually, Rover had the greater influence on the design. Honda had to concede that macpherson struts were more suitable for the European market. It was actually Rover's finest hour prior to BMW running them into the ground. (I'm not dissing the rover 75 in the slightest)

I have such fond memories of my Montego Turbo. Every time it hit boost the car would squirm all over the road and it felt like the engine was trying to escape. Great fun though and very quick.

I had an E reg white Montego Turbo and it always put a smile on my face when the turbo kicked in at about 3k rpm after the initial turbo lag. Then the Rover 220 was wow! The turbo was more even and quick up the rev range. It would pull all the way up to 125mph so quick and easy no problem! Even doing 100 mph (on a track) you could pass another car as quick is if you doing 50 to 70mph! It was a great car! Then I bought one of the last MGZS 180s electric blue, lovely car!! It’s good to see these old cars again!

An MG ZR160 would be a fun car to add to the test. The front end is essentially the same as the R8 200 and the rear is rehashed Maestro. Even the basic Rovers were fun to drive as I found out after passing my test in '95.

Back in the day, I had kind of best of both worlds - I had a "D" Reg Montego Turbo, but with upgraded brakes (Corrado conversion) lowered and stiffened springs, poly bushes all around and some nice sticky Fulda rubber. Best bit was that it also had the T16i engine to pull it along, with a little tune taking it to 225bhp. Loved that car, it unfortunately had to be sold as I was moving to Australia, but it did have one unreliability problem - the Honda gearbox couldn't handle the power & torque so it ended up having more of those than services! 😀

British Leyland cars starting up first time is pretty rare I think - what utter drivel. I never had any trouble with any of my BL cars starting first time especially the supposed "rubbish" ones - the 1978 Mk2 Morris Marina 1800 HL/TC and the 1980 Austin Allegro 1750 TC Equipe I owned always started up first time every time - all to do how they were looked after and serviced and I laways looked after and serviced my own cars especially as garages etc always used cheap parts in cars which is what really caused problems with reliablity etc and then the car/manufacturer would get the blame and there was also the fact that most people back then didnt look after or service it until they had to put it into the garage or it broke down. I worked in a garage from the mid 80s to the late 90s and BL cars were actually very reliable especially the Maestros and Montegos - Jeremey Clarkson even had a dig at these cars because they came out as very reliable on Top Gear saying that they all must have been diesels even though the petrol engines in them were known for being reliable. They also came out as one of the best in their class for crash tests - one of our customers slid his Montego against the kerb of a roundabout and when we cut off the sill to replace it we found that the sills were about twice the thickness of their rival cars. Even though they were waxed inside the sills it did not stop them rusting like most cars did back then.

Same experience here. They've always got to add a little 'seasoning' to apease the idiot factor.
We had as a family a lot of BL and Rover stuff from the 60s to the 2000s. Very rarely did we have much in the way of issues and fully breaking down was an incredibly rare event.
In the early 2000s I had a Maestro fitted with the Rover M16 engine with a close ratio box from an early MG Montego, it was a riot! The brakes weren't exceptional but they did the job. I never did get around to fitting the G60 based 'big brake' conversion though!
While that Maestro Turbo is in beautiful condition I wonder how old the brake fluid is and what the pads are and what condition they're in?
Regarding the younger chap saying these were referred to as 'the bomb' regarding hinted at fragility that's simply not true. The O series wasn't ultra refined but it was ultra tough and would take A LOT of stick!
Regarding the video they might have gone for the odd cliche here and there but mostly they were pretty complimentary about both because they actually got out there and gave them some grief unlike so many armchair experts who've never even sat in what they sh1t talk.

I used to work for a firm nearly 30 years ago that handed out Maestros, Montegos and Rover 200s as company cars. At the time, you didn't want to be seen dead in them. I think they're sub-zero cool now. The looks have aged well I reckon.

Built a T16 powered van few years back and my younger brother owns my old T16 maestro Turbo! Was converted a decade ago! Had a lot of fun in them back in the day! Very underrated cars lot faster than they get credit for!! The 220 coupe looks too have suspension and brake upgrade from start! Built a lot of fast sleepers from old rovers few years back! Now injured and just run them as they are good reliable transport!

Nice seeing these cars, especially the Maestro, but would've been a fairer comparison if the Maestro had some coilovers & brake upgrade, or Rover was bog standard.

You can’t compare the Tomcat’s handling on Koni’s and with the Brakes from the Rover 600 fitted on this car with that of the standard car. My discs warped in 3000 miles constantly getting skimmed which made them worse ( they shaved the warp off them making less material so failed within 1000 miles) so I had half a dozen sets of discs and pads under warranty (same fronts as the 1.4 Rover R8 car). The standard suspension was crap (the Rover engineer believed hard suspension was sporty suspension not compliant) and showed on all Rovers including the MG TF 135 which lifted its nose at 85. I maxed mine out in convoy with a Porsche 911 for 35 miles on the Autobahn doing between 130-150+ with the needle pressing against the trip reset knob. Changing into 4th at 110 and 5th at 135 was very impressive because it means you change change down at 130 into 4th for stability through very high speed bends and into 3rd at 100 mph keeping it in the power band (4 to 6k) and it is brilliant having 240Nm of flat torque from 1750 to 6000 rpm.

I think the stat needs replacing on that Tomcat, she goes and sounds well though!
See if you can get hold of a 620ti and even maybe a Vitesse Sport, both also ridiculously good fun. Actually, a late model facelift Montego Turbo would be nice to see too. The facelift did a lot to make them look a lot more aggressive on the road. I always wanted a black Turbo.
Great video, it's nice to see cars which usually get rubbished by people who've never sat in them actually praised for their abilities. Nice!

Ran loads of 620ti and Vitesse Turbo's back in 2005 too about 2010 ish! Was all from about £150 too about £500 max for a blinder with good history etc!! Terrorise the local boy racers with them and put them in maestro cars vans etc then terrorise the boy racers! Did not mind blowing them up as had plenty of engines! Shame they where worthless for so long now very rare! Still had my fun and good cheap clean fun in

My 220Gsi Turbo in standard trim was not a good handling car or any good at braking, the standard brakes were the same as the 1.4 ABS model, warping the discs when pushed and always after 1800 miles or so. It was a point and shoot machine with terrible handling on tight bends so instead of using a balanced throttle with high corner speed, stuffing it in on the brakes to near standstill and punting it out with the turbo boost was the order of the day. Embarrassed a group of kids in their red XR3i on the A9 in Scotland once, whilst towing a trailer with my KTM enduro on it, did they look ashen when I out accelerated them after one of the many roundabouts before it was upgraded to dual carriageway. Did 50k miles over 4 years and it had so much character, you could forgive the faults such as going through 6 sets of front discs and 12 sets of pads, crappy handling and a self peeling sunroof seal at 135 which the dealer never fixed, allowing a hurricane of sound and a pinky finger to be poked through the gap. 3rd gear between 70 and 110 and 4th between 110 and 135 when trying thus allowing a downshift to 3rd at 100, was very entertaining. However puzzlingly it wouldn’t pull any faster than 135 on the Nurburgring full length Dottinger Hohe straight, even though it indicated 150 on the autobahn both before and afterwards, grippy track surface perhaps? 😎😇

Great video guys I owned rover 800 vitesse turbo , love to have one again . I wonder how fast if ARG put the 2.litre turbo engine into the Rover 400, in Rover 800 and Rover 600 Ti as both cars were 0 to 60 7.3 sec and top speed 143 mph, as Rover 400 smaller and lighter car . Regards mark

The 0-60 times of the Rover 2.0 litre Turbos were as follows:
      220 Coupe Turbo - 6.2 secs
      220 GTi / GSi Turbo - 6.4 secs
      420 GSi Turbo - 6.4 secs
      620Ti - 7.0 secs
      820 Vitesse Sport - 7.3 secs
Top speeds ranged from 150mph in the Coupe. The 220/420 were 146mph and I think this dropped to 143mph in the 620Ti and 140mph in the 820 Vitesse. Not sure if there was any variation across the 800 Fastback, Saloon and Coupe which were all available with that engine.
All the same power at 198bhp / 200PS but different weight and drag coefficient.

    I had a 1984 montego efi.
I changed the shocks and springs to Spax adjustable items from Motobuild.
Everthing else standard withbits whole hearted 115bhp.
I entered it in the first Finlake Hillclimb in Devon running standard road tyres. Whether it was down to me driving but managed 24 fastest time of the weekend overall out of a 144 entry field and, pitted against Sierra RS500 cossie (John Meredith) (yep 500 bhp)Escort Cosworths and plenty of other juicy runners.
My nearest rival was a Lotus Cortina knocking out 220bhp. Imaculate vehicle bit despite the best efforts could not shake me.
Proud to have run that car and driven hard it handles like a rally car.
If anything of that weekend, it changed peoples perspective of these machines.
Sad part was i dumped the car in a ditch on the last run😂.
So transfered a that suspension onto an MG Meastro.
    Even more fun!!

I don't think it's really a comparable test really. Maybe if the 220 had all its original suspension, brakes, wheels and tyres it would be fair.
Had to work on many 90s rovers and was always very underwhelmed by them. The height of disappointment for me was the 420 GSi turbo.

Will be some tool when sorted was legend up here! Long live the Lover 420SRi Turbo built on a budget not finance😂

If BMW had the same ethos as VW had when they bought Skoda, I.E. wanting them to succeed and not seeing them as competitions to themselves Rover would still be here, but that was never their intention , they just wanted to r a p e it , then sell what was left with so many clauses that it had no chance. On a side note Rover do still make cars, just 4x4`s and the car division is part and parcel of Land Rover, with tax returns filed every year, You never know, Tata might one day bring it back ??
