The Zulu Language

  • If you have never heard what the Zulu language sounds like, this is the perfect way to get a "taste" of it. Zulu is one of the official languages of South Africa and is one of the Bantu/ Nguni family of languages. *Please excuse my mistake at the beginning of the video where I said grammar instead of vocabulary. Enjoy!

      The host of the video called it a grammar lesson, but only asked for translations of single words and simple phrases. A grammar lesson would include explanations of word order, morphology, prepositions/postpositions, persons and numbers, verb conjugation, noun classes, articles, etc.
      The video taught nothing about the language's structure.

      Of all African languages I’ve always thought Zulu & Xhosa ranked in the top five as some of the most beautiful. I’m an Afro-American & I’ve done ancestry dna testing. 4 percent of my dna is African Southeastern Bantu & 3 percent African South Central Hunter gatherers(Khoi-San), which are genetically what the Zulu & Xhosa people are comprised of, the former and the latter aforementioned, even more so the former. I can imagine my ancestors came from the Angolan and Mozambican(small percentage of Atlantic Slave Trade concentrated here) extract of Bantu related peoples, who are the related to these Zulu and Xhosa people in a way on the European continent Poles, Ukrainians, Czechs, Russians, & other Slavic speaking peoples are related to each other. Ancestry DNA(ancestry.com) indicates where African Southeastern Bantu dna is dispersed, being Angola, Namibia, Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, South Africa, & partly Madagascar.

    • @elmerdaserdmannchen2604
      @elmerdaserdmannchen2604 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Here, I can parse the sentence to show you that I actually constructed it. The "ngi" prefix is the first person singular subject prefix. "Qale" means "began" or "have begun". "Qal" is the root or stem (I forgot the difference,) which means "begin" and the "e" suffix makes it past tense. "Ukufunda" means to study, "isiZulu" means "the Zulu language", more or less. "Ngoba" is the conjunction "because", and "sihle" means "it is beautiful." "Si" is the subject prefix for the "isi" class of Zulu nouns. I used this prefix because by "it" I mean "isiZulu".
      Sorry, I've never explained how to parse a sentence before.

    • @elmerdaserdmannchen2604
      @elmerdaserdmannchen2604 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Also, I don't know how Google Translate would know to conjugate the verb for "to be beautiful" in agreement with "isiZulu". From the computer's perspective, if I put in the phrase "I have begun to study Zulu because it is beautiful," there's no way for the program to be able to determine whether I mean, by saying the word "it", that Zulu is beautiful or whether I am referring to something else. I could be learning Zulu because I heard a certain Zulu song that I thought was pleasant, and I could be referring to that. If I were referring to that, then I would say (unless my Zulu is incorrect,) "Ngiqale ukufunda isiZulu ngoba ihle kakhulu," instead of, "Ngiqale ukufunda isiZulu ngoba SIhle kakhulu," since the word for song--iculo-- belongs to a different noun class than "isiZulu," this could just as easily be a translation.
