- How to make a home made loom and wall hanging weave:)

Remember back in grade school when you would take lil strips of paper and you would put them inside an another paper with slits.. by going over under over under ect.. then take another strip and put it through opposite the other.. and keep doing that till you had a lilll thing.. Thats weaving
I made a couple with thread and yarn. They turned out okay.. I learned what to do and what not to do. I made them all on this thing which is called a loom.
The string that holds still and is usually up and down is called your warp string. On this particular loom.. I didn't like how wide apart the warp was.. and when I double it up it made the warp all close together where they meet.. So I thought would make my own loom:)
Im using a wooden frame that I got from a thrift store. I took the Embroidery piece out.. and Daria made that embroidery piece (I don't know who she is..) but it took em from 1979 - 1983 soooo I'm going to repurpose this piece in a future project.
I position the frame with the length taller than it is wide.. and I'm going to use some nails, a ruler, and colored pencils to make the loom. (Also a drill and a hammer)
The nails are 1/8'' wide. To make the warp spaced out evenly I'm going to mark off on the bottom every 1/8" and put a nail on every other mark.
I drew a line down the middle to try and keep the holes I drill nails nice and straight. Because the nails are so big, if you don't drill holes for the nails... the wood is going to crack. If you use smaller nails you should be okay:)
When I started hammering the nails I ran into another problem. Because the nails were so close to gather it made the head of the nails touch or overlap. That would make it really hare to get the warp in-between the nails. To fix that you just stagger the nails and make ever other nail shorter than the ones its surrounded by.
I drilled every other whole a little bit deeper and hammered them all in.
Next I did the same thing on the other side... I found it was easier if I marked every 1/4", used the nails to make lil divots for the drill, and hammered in the short nails first then the tall ones.
Next the warp string. When I pick warp string I usually pick ones that don't stretch a lot. Other wise, it will make your weave shrink. I tested out using a stretchy warp on this lil weave.. and tbh it didn't shrink as much as I thought I would.. but it did a lil. so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Take your warp string. You want to start on the same amount of nails in on both sides. I tided the sting to the nail with a lil square knot and began to wrap it around the nails top to bottom.
Keep doing that till its as wide as you want your weave. on the very last string I don't tie it off yet.. I just wrap it around some nails and go back through all the strings and make sure its nice and tight. ( you want it tight enough that you can strum it but not so tight that the warp string is going to break)
So we have the width of the weave now to figure out how long we want it. I wanted it to end with 6" gap.. So I cut out a pice of poster board or card-stock that is 6" tall.
To get the card-stock in-between the warp you are going to use something call a shed stick. You can use a dowel, a paint stirrer, a ruler.. or something like that for the shed stick.
weave the shed stick in.. and then when you lift it up that will make a gap for the card stock. You will use this later when you put the yarn in.
The yarn/string that you put in between the warp sting is call the weft. To start, take like 5 lengths of the weft, and weave the shed stick in again opposite of what you have your cardstock in. Then put your weft in (I used a shuttle at first.. but I don't really like the shuttle so I'll show you in a sec how to do it with a needle). Be sure to leave a little tail. Yeah son, I spent a boatload of money on art school, and then I made a half hour course on skillshare that was like half a semester of bookbinding knowledge. That's like $10,000 of knowledge for $10. I have long wondered, since graduating, if college is even a necessity in this age given that information is readily accessible if you go looking for it. (Though sometimes you need structured learning like in a school setting to even know that things exist so it's not like school is a bad thing, just a different thing.)
This channel is literally just... bootleg crafts.
Which is great since craft supplies are expensive.

I really appreciate that you re-purposed Daria's piece. I mean, it's a very niche'd taste in art, but like you said; She did put 4 years of her time into making that. Mad respect for your show of compassion on that. On another note, you're so incredibly talented, you make every project look like such a breeze. I agree with you so much! A couple years ago, most crafting channels made more complex things like bookbinding, knitting, weaving etc. But in recent years, those channels have either stopped uploading or changed to be as simple as the new and popular craft channels that just do things like slime and squishies. I'm so glad there's a channel like you that makes good quality videos and isn't conforming to the norms of youtube craft channels, and is doing things like weaving and enamel pins!

Nice video! My art class just finished a weaving unit so here are some of my tips!
- You dont need the notched (or in this case nails) loom; you can simply wrap the warp in a figure eight shape around any frame! and then you need to make sure to tighten it a lot (which also creates little divets in the frame from where the warp was tightened). This method is helpful for beginners that might not want to make the investment into a loom; you can just use any empty frame. Do note that you do have the possibility of the sides coming in if you pull on the strings tight while weaving. (also you need to twine the warp strings)
-there are many other types of weaving techniques than just over under; my favorite is the Soumak weave; its more time consuming but very pretty!
-I would recommend when you start a new piece of yarn, don't start at the edge of the weaving: start in the middle so you wont be able to see the loose threads
-this might just be a personal preference but I like to put some tassels at the beginning of my weaving; the same method as in this video but I like to use 3 strings per tassel to create a larger tassel (and you can put them in the middle of the weaving too and cut them down); I recommend to wrap the yarn around a book for large tassels and then cut them off for all even lengths of string and if you want shorter tassels, I like to wrap it around my phone then cut it

You can also use a piece of cardboard with notches cut into the side where you slide in ur warp and a hole cut in the middle so u can see ur weaving :) (shaped like a picture frame) but I did a less dense weaving than u so not sure how well that would work for stuff like this

This is the first video I've found early enough to think "huh, I could actually get that skillshare deal", so I just signed up. Love the video, love the eye weave. Have you tried a peg loom for knitting? I made a massive one once by drilling holes into a plank then gluing premade joining dowels into the holes. Then I made tshirt strips and joined them into yarn. To knit you wrap the yarn around the peg row by row, each row lifting the bottom loop over the top.
In the end the thing I made was so heavy and had a really loose weave; it was less like a cosy blanket and more like a gladiator net!
Hahahahah “gladiator net” I love that. I’ll have to look into making me one of those...
If you’re ever interested in giving it another shot, your pegs were probably too far apart or you were using yarn that’s too thin. It’s awesome as hell that you made a loom yourself though, seems like it took a lot of effort. Looms are pretty cheap though in my experience, you should definitely give it a shot! Knitting is super rewarding, at least to me :)
@@tylerburney8576 Moved house and the original got destroyed but I'm up for trying again. Using the premade joining dowels was super easy, you just drill a hole and stick them in. I think my pegs were definitely a little too far apart, but this did make it very easy to use with just your fingers rather than having to find a crochet hook every time. Next time I'll put them closer together and perhaps use multiple strands of regular knitting yarn which has more stretch. Could make some nice rugs this way.

Just advise from my experience I’m new to weaving and finally today after not giving up I created such a beautiful 🌸 flower loomed table cover ♥️ I’ll admit it took me several times before I got it This piece turned out so lovely it looks almost crocheted I was brave enough to take on such an advanced project It proves never let fear take over

Just found this channel on a Facebook ad with a snippet of your hydro dipping project… it's already become my absolute favorite channel. Thank you for making all of these crafts simple tips (a little less daunting or complicated) and achievable for a lot of people. Often times I want to learn something new, but it seems so complicated, expensive, and time consuming that I just put it on my wish list…Thank you for your creative style. I'm so glad you posted this! I have an awful, ugly ass electric box on my wall and I want to cover it up with something. Framed pictures were a no no because they restrict access to the box, but since a weaved piece can be easily rolled up, it's going to be perfect! Thanks for the tutorial, now I just need to think of a design.

These videos are truly a blessing because people like me interested in handicrafts have literally no other way to learn them, because the elders or whoever might have these skills are too often inaccessible, and honestly there aren't any elders that I know that could teach me stuff like this. Finally, a great weaving tutorial, that shown correct techniques. With the other loom with a 4 epi, when you double your warp to make it 8epi weave a header on the top and bottom. A header uses you’re warp thread and weave three rows or picks, this will evenly distributed your warp. Another great place to learn is to look for a local weaving guild. They love to help new weavers. Keep weaving and join us in our yarny heaven.

this is random, but i once got to see a weaved art piece(?) thing & it was very very cool. the artist weaved just one line a day, expressing how she felt that day by using thicker/thiner threads or changing the thread's color. the piece was complete after a month, and it was sorta like a visual journal. hard days made the piece lumpy, gloomy. very cool

When I was trying to weave I was using these huge Bobby pins to drag my yarn through its was good for what I was making because I was changing colors often . I think I’m gonna have to start weaving again . Love your eye wall hanging ❤️

Well done, as a new weaver, that's a fabulous job! Your weaving is so even and the fabric is smooth; your selvedges haven't drawn in; and your joins are masterly!! I use a floor loom as I haven't got the patience to do tapestry like this, but you're a natural (or rather you've got a very good understanding of what's important when weaving so that the end result looks really good). I hope you go on to do lots more.
(It's also Very good to see someone who isn't "an older lady", such as I am, enjoying and promoting weaving!)

A little tip for designs in your weave: put your design under the strings and mark dots on the strings with a marker, then put it out and start your weave. That way is easier to control the size of the figures you're working on.
