The mint green one is really cool. I should've gotten one of the colored ones too but the the black one was on sale so I couldn't pass it up. On a side note, I recently filed down the nut and put bigger strings on it for BEAD tuning. Unfortunately I wish I hadn't. The B string is super loose and flubby. I can barely even tolerate it at C...
+Masters-of-Music the black one is cool also. I done a black paint job on my pickguard. turned out great. Too bad about the filing, but you can get a better nut now from Ibanez. Instead of plastic. mine is plastic anyway. I know it only affects open playing but I play open ALOT. Never heard of BEAD tuning. Learn something new every day.
Gah guys who have the mint-green one, I really envy you, they went so sold-out that I was unable to get one even with weeks of pre-order. Then I just got myself the sunburst one.
Just picked this beast up today! I've been playing guitar for a while and never have played bass, so I wanted to try it and it does not disappoint! \m/
Me three! I'm a 61 year old guitar player who never played bass before, so I decided to give it a try. I mostly noodle playing lead lines, not so much rhythm guitar, so I might be a natural bass player. I often double bass lines on guitar, and usually listen to the bass player the most (unless the guitarist is really good). Had yet another guitar on hold, but after trying the pretty Ibanez Talman basses hanging on the rack, I was smitten, and used my hold money towards the Ibanez instead of "The Loar" 279, since I already have an excellent Ibanez Artcore hollow body F-hole (with CC pickup in neck 'bucker hole). I read reviews where bass players with many $,1000+ basses use their Talman instead. Judging from the videos, it has a nice "Fendery" sound. The mahogany body and rose wood neck help mellow the sound. They had some of those Music Man Stingray copy basses there too, which also sound great, more punchy if you EQ them that way, but I prefer a mellow warm bass sound. There were two maple slab cap necks (ivory and green) and two rosewood slab cap necks (sunburst and red). The sunburst felt slightly lighter, but all four were ~8 pounds, which is a good weight for a bass guitar. The red bass had the darker rosewood slab board, and just seemed to call my name, but they all sounded great - very resonant instruments! I might have gone for the Ivory colored one with the maple slab board (looked like a solid maple neck, but the lack of a skunk stripe is the "tell", and if you look closely the slab board is visible), which was a gorgeous yellowish ivory color, but the red one was like looking at a beautiful woman - I had to have her!
2nd knob (potmeter by the way) is NOT tone. It is the active EQ controls: top is treble cut/boost, bottom is bass cut/boost. And they do NOT increase volume, they change the sound itself - which can cause on certain set speakers to sound like lounder (like bass is up on the speaker and you boost bass - obviously you will hear like it's louder but only because you raised the level of bass and it is already boosted on the cab).
My son has one and it’s great! I just ordered a set of metal concentric knobs because I didn’t like the way the plastic ones felt. Still a great bass. I prefer the bass/treble knobs set flat and the balance control slightly towards the bridge pick up.
I just bought one of these this week. Guitar Center had certain colors on sale for $179.00. I tried the 300 a few times, but they were always missing knobs and I just couldn't get my sound out of them. Seeing the sale price, I took another look. Found one that was right out of the box in metallic blue. It sounded great. With a few turns of the tone knobs, I can get a smooth deep classic bass sound, add in a little treble, and I got a really nice slap sound. I keep the pickup balance right in the middle. I bout this as a nice backup instrument, but I may play this over my $500 Schecter. I can't put the Talman down. I really enjoy playing it. As with most Ibanez basses, it has a really fast neck. PLenty of string spacing for slap, as well as finger and pick style. I have a show Nov 27th, I will probably play the Talman.
I just picked up the 5 string version of this for 175 bucks today. With just a smidge of treble added it has a pretty biting yet beefy tone through the Peavey at the shop. I can't wait to run it through my GK
I have the mustard bass. You are absolutely correct, mine needs adjusting. When I fret high on the neck on the E string it clicks against the frets and it also has buzzing sometimes. I hate it. I need to figure out how to fix it. I like the guitar because it is beautiful but like you said, it's definitely not for live performing. But the way it clicks makes me not even want to play it sometimes. Any suggestions and tips are welcome.
Yeah, it's a good starter bass if you don't want to spend a lot of cash. It's good for standard tuning but I wouldn't really recommend it for dropped tunings. I tried converting mine to BEAD tuning and I don't like how the low B is so loose and rattly. I'll probably try trading it for a 5 string soon.
What gauge strings? I usually tune the low string to C as well and it's definitely an improvement over B but it still doesn't play nearly as smoothly as it did at E. It seems like it needs more tension. I keep wanting to tune it higher to tighten it up. :)
As far as it sounds (and I already knew the answer) certain 4-stringers do not really like going below C. Even with very thick strings, they will not have the action or the tone you are looking for with that tuning. Basically this is a vintage-kinda body, so even though it has active EQ and a much-more-modern side of the sound too, still, a copy of the Jaguar, which is pretty old design. As you said, it did not even support by factory standards the thickness of the string you wished to use so you had to file the nut. See where I'm going?
Hello, I got this bass, the first knob for the pickups does have a central button, however the second knob for bass/treble ( both top and bottom do not seem to have the " central button" and both keep turning all the way with no limit. Do you have the same or is smthg wrong with it ? I need to find out asap, otherwise I will need to contact the seller again .... thank you.
The knobs shouldnt keep turning. If they just keep turning I'd talk to whoever u bought it from. I mean as long as they still work it's not a big deal, but if u bought it new it should at least be free from defects like that. So yah, tell whoever u bought it from
im thinking of learning bass...will i need to buy an amp to start with or can i wait a while if im not going to be playing it for anyone? i have a stereo cd system that i can put my ukulele into will it be a good idea to put this bass into or will it kill my stereo?
I bought one of these and it rattles and buzzes like mad. I've raised the strings and it still does it a lot. The low E is about 4mm above the 12th fret. Should I fiddle with the neck? I'm new to basses btw so I don't know what to expect.
I have a question. I want to pick up this bass but ive never had one before. do i need the 9v battery to play it properly or is that just an added feature im not exactly sure how that works
Great video....why the dislikes!! Oh well.... this is what I wanna see and hear....gimme tone not someone showing off how good they are.... BTW... you are good.... great job!!
George Robinson Yes it does sound this good. Adjust the bass knob at 50% and treble at about 75%. As soon as a song I recorded this bass with gets mastered, I’ll upload it.
Got the white color of the same model...got it with a Fender Rumble 25. I love my bass looks badass. It’s my first bass right now...but yeah the fret buzz makes me cringe lol. Still one cool entry level bass.
This is a GREAT bass, also have excellent reviews. Can't talk about action and setup as the shop where I ordered it (yes, I already KNEW I want this baby, not just "found it accidentally" or some guy "spoke it on me") already set it up for me for free. I could not get my hands on the mint green one, so I got the Two-Fade Burst (basically sunburst) one. One thing that it is HEAVY. I mean, 4kg. An Ibanez SGR305 fiver is lighter... but at least it's mahagony. Value for money? GREAT! Overall? Still GREAT! But best if you just try 'em both if you can and decide based on how comfy they feel and how do they sound for you. Recommend to try them in the shop on a cheaper, budget-kinda combo so that the expensive pro stuff does not "cheat" the sound for you.
Doesn't the other one have the short scale? They had one at the shop today, and it seemed easier for me to play, so I was going to get it, but the salesman said: "you don't want that, it's a 3/4 size bass". I replied that it had a shorter scale maybe, but was hardly "3/4 size". I'm almost wishing I had gotten it, because I'm a guitar player learning how to play bass, but in the long run I'll likely be glad to have gotten the 34" scale...?
I tested this bass and the tone is incredible, but i didn't like the out of the box setup, the strings were too high for me but nonetheless great tone for this price
Volume pots never ever had "center thing". EQ and tone usually does, especially EQ as that is the "untouched" tone without any cut or boost. Volume is not something you "put to the center".
I appreciate your vid, but because you don't truly know what the knobs DO, it all is kinda a mess. Bass / Treble EQ is set closer to the bridge. Balancer / Volume is closer to the neck. Again, thanks.
Sure! You might use it for the long haul. I have a Lakland and I’m strongly considering getting this one. I should get it soon before the price raises.
Nothing is perfect 'out of the box'. A guitar is taken from one microclimate to the next, from moist to dry, indeed if bought overseas it will have been near frozen on the plane. For neck adjustments use a truss rod. Don't fear the truss rod.

BEAD is great for playing in standard tuning and drop tunings with the same bass but I probably should've just gotten a 5-string.
+SixSentSoldiers I have the mint green one, too. Awesome bass.
Gah guys who have the mint-green one, I really envy you, they went so sold-out that I was unable to get one even with weeks of pre-order. Then I just got myself the sunburst one.

good video! You were very descriptive with the tone options, and I'm glad somebody finally came out and said it in a review.
I've played guitar for 15 years and am looking to take up playing bass, would this be a good bass to start with?
Yeah, it's a good starter bass if you don't want to spend a lot of cash. It's good for standard tuning but I wouldn't really recommend it for dropped tunings. I tried converting mine to BEAD tuning and I don't like how the low B is so loose and rattly. I'll probably try trading it for a 5 string soon.
