- A short upload of some action at Portsmouth & Southsea from May 1996. We see a couple of VEP's and a Wessex Electric along with a Regional Railways class 158 before the highlight of the day, a railtour passing through behind a Res class 47 and a light engine Cromptom that had worked a mini tour to Salisbury earlier. If you liked the video please subscribe to my channel, there are lots more transport & quirky vids to upload!
I'm so grateful that you captured this video. any videos of the 80's-90's on Portsmouth railways is non existent! This and your other video have been a great help to me! thank you.
My pleasure.... i used to get out & about quite a bit a one time.....
Those were the days, when my Grandfather used to work for British Rail before privatization as a ticket inspector in order to gain access to the platform, Handy having him on shift, let me on to the platforms to watch the trains, occasionally jumping on a train down to The Hard, and back again, he did not know :)
Only once did I get asked for ticket between P&S and the Hard, got a stern talking to after that :).
Merlin (Class 33) would have ended up back at Fratton Yards, like the Class 50's on the Cardiff service after disengaging at The Hard.
When the Cardiff to Portsmouth came through, the reserve engine would follow it down out of Fratton, hook up, and take it back out on the next service, the remaining lone engine would shunt to Yards, and wait for the next service (hourly).
Sadly by now the loco hauled service trains had finished.....
I remember when the line was still in to the dockyard at the Harbour end of the high level. They left the points and line in for many years after trains stopped running down there.
Also remember when there where 3 lines into the lower level and the big booking hall with the wooden floor.
Then working there in my early railway career in the Telephone Enquiry Bureau in the offices and up in the pigeon poo at the clock
Thanks for your memories..... the railway constantly changes and not always for the better.....
Excellent video thank you! its not that long ago yet the rolling stock has now completely changed 👌
My pleasure.....
So amazing that this was captured
I wish i could go back to the 80s and spend time at Portsmouth, i used to spend hrs there
I think we all have similar thoughts.....
Brilliant footage yet again 👍
Thank you.....
Great footage, thanks for sharing!
My pleasure.....
Oh. To return to the days.
Great railway video as always Soi Buakhao
Thank you.....
Great location for variety, used to spend time here in middle 80s, crimp tons, Thumpers, slam door units & odd inter regional working.
It had either finished or was winding down by the time i filmed this.....
First to comment 🥇
Great to see the now demise 442 in action - superb train
And a 47 class loco hauling a special
Yes, this was the other main route for the 442s to run on. I'm not sure where the 47 tour came from, i only rode the mini tour from Portsmouth Harbour to Salisbury & back to get some haulage with the Crompton!
Great video
Great stuff Soi.
Thank you.....
0:46 - 1:29 - What's the OLD class designation of this rig? 3-CIG?
Class 423/4 4-VEP
You Brits change rolling stock like we Yanks change drawers.
It seems like it since privatisation. In BR days stock and liveries took forever to change. On the other hand the Class 313 was introduced in 1976 and is still running!
Yes, BR kept stock running for 30 to 40 years but in the last 15-20 years fairly new trains are replaced by even newer ones....crazy!
Why do so many of these videos have that tube train at the end?
That 20 second clip is there to upload the end cards over rather than spoil the last 20 seconds of the uploaded video.......
