- Testing a Lego car against different obstacles and improving it until it becomes a capable climber.
Demonstrates what you need to consider: wheel diameter, gear ratio, 4-wheel drive, tire grip, breakover angle, weight distribution. Enjoy!
Base rules for all builds:
-4 wheels
-no steering (to simplify the builds)
-only Lego parts used

The design process is usually the most important thing to show in my opinion, it's always great to see where you started, your failures/shortcomings along the way, and what the final result can achieve.

We play with RC 1/10 Crawler and got the same results you so easily explain (unfortunately except for adjustable shape, that is not applicable to Crawlers maintaining some similarly with real cars).

I saw this video when it was first released. It's so brilliant that I always come back and watch it again. It fascinates me especially because it shows that there is a solution for almost every problem and obstacle. You just have to be creative and have patience.

@@lagule great ideas start simple, though this likely wouldn’t be a viable design more because of the mechanical complexity and therefore increased risk of failure.
@@lagule Given the tools he had at hand you can't really expect him to build anything more than a toy car. But this kind of problem solving, and outside-of-the-box thinking is not far from what JPL engineers had to do when building the iconic Mars rovers.
@@Sammy197 its not really this type of problem solving required for designing rover drones, and I liked this video because it reminded me I had done the same vehicle as a kid but with another axle as the joint between the two articulated parts. As far as I know I'm not a nasa, jpl or northropp gruman engineer
@@lagule a rover is not that complex tbh. It's a car with a couple more wheels and independent adjustable suspension we built a scale model for a robotics event worked just fine. It could even plant seeds.

The rovers mentioned, like the Mars ones, at least the ones I have pictured from memory are quite more constrained in movement I think?

I would've changed the adjustable middle joint control from the D-pad to the left and right trigger. It would make it easier to control both the front and rear wheels at the same time as the middle joint.
