I love this. I am really going down the masking rabbit hole now... Could you make a video detailing pin registration contrast masking? Im trying it out now, but running into a lot of questions and it'd be great to hear it from someone who knows the ropes-- especially for RA4!

To complete this video, it would have been nice to see how you put the medium format negative and mask into the enlarger. Do you use the medium format enlarger film holder or do you have to use a 4x5 enlarger film holder? I'm guessing it would be much easier to cut the 4x5 mask to the medium format film size and tape them together, then print with a medium format film holder. Thanks.

My man, we need more in this series! ;)

Really enjoying this series. I "understood" masking but these videos have filled in the missing pieces I didn't know where missing. Your mention of Ctein was surprising; most photographers only know about his digital work if they even know of him at all. Looking forward to more videos!

I've known for a long time that masks were analog, but I had never actually made one and never really knew how to make them. This is great!

My frustration has been that my Durst M800 (along with many Durst models of its vintage) has a pin registration negative carrier. My problem is that as far as I know, no one makes a compatible pin registration punch. The few company that made these punches closed their doors years ago, and they generally made punches (like the one shown in the video) for 4x5 inch format and larger. I'm been doing my registration by eyeball, but I plan to order a set of 1/4 inch pins and follow his setup here. If you are wondering, this masking business is well worth the trouble in terms of resulting print quality.

Ternes-Burton will make a punch for you that matches your carrier, but the cost would be high. Changing to the type I showed will be much more affordable.

@@TheNakedPhotographer Just as well, as I contacted Ternes-Burton twice and they never replied.

Remind me at the old days in the 80ies. Agfa GO210 and other nice halftone Sheetfilms for masking were available.
What films do you use today for masking?

For black and white I use Ultrafine ortholith film. Arista ortholith works too, but I find it higher contrast. For color I use Tmax 100.

If someone wanted to do unsharp masks with 35mm,
I'm thinking that the sproket holes could be utilized in some way for registration.

What height are your 1/16” pins? I have a couple of Condit punches - but no pins. I found a supplier, but they come in various heights.

    • @TheNakedPhotographer
      @TheNakedPhotographer  2 ปีที่แล้ว

I believe they are 3/16” tall

@@TheNakedPhotographer thanks, I’m struggling to find any. Do you know the name they go by in the pcb world?
My side punch is slightly different to yours - has an additional punch point, a removable register bar for 120 film; and a tiny register bar that sits in a recessed slot in the base for 35mm that has two pins - I think to sit in the sprocket holes of the negative to keep it in place during punching. The other punch does two holes in opposite corners of an 8x10 sheet - so the punch bar runs diagonally across the base.

What type of hole punch do you use.?

    • @TheNakedPhotographer

The one that makes small holes was made by Condit, they are no longer in business. The one that makes large holes is the Office Depot store brand paper hole punch.
