    I'm an AA fan [see what I did there?], and I think it's great that they've brought something of their own to this price point. So many others show up with JACM™--just another cheap microphone. Here we're offered a real value proposition, and one that has useable sound with unique options. Great review, Bandrew, and it's great to see you recognized by a quality shop like Austrian Audio as a voice that they hope to hear from. 👏

    Showed up for an AA USB test, resulted in being blown away by the music tests…because it doesn’t matter so much the gear when performance is amazing! I already knew this after 13 years in music production, but man this was good. This microphone does a lot more than it seems by appearance, but then again, it’s Austrian Audio.

    I’m very impressed with Austrian Audio as a company. Their use of a nice fat cardioid pattern is a wise choice for the application. It is also a bit unusual. They seem to be aiming for a similar response curve - in their case mildly bright - across the model list. Again, a very wise plan (think AKG) to assure loyal users of familiar ground. The new MiCreator is a tad weak in the voice-critical upper bass, but only in comparison with the grownups. Very impressed.
    Now, about your music. Once I hear whatever is in your fertile mind today, whatever you’re reviewing means squat to me. Today’s piece was simply spectacular! I bow to you.

    • @Podcastage

      Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on this one Peter. It's cool seeing how they develop their lineup of gear. We don't see a brand new company do this often, but we get to see it with AA and Lewitt. Cool stuff to witness.

    It's very good and its noise reduction is amazing. I was impressed at how well it did in the untreated room. I've never heard Alan Parsons, but you're not the only one to mention that. I may have to dig into his discography. And I'm guessing the reason is cost to manufacture and also when it comes to small circuit electronics I think China kind of has the best manufacturing capabilities at this point so maybe there's some expertise or scale benefits that they can offer. I think we're not getting mic reviews every day from Bandrew just because it takes a bit more time to drop another platinum single while music testing.
    The mic is impressive. I totally dig the stereo/XY/host+satellite setup through the IN port. I only wish there was an XLR version of micReator as well. Austian Audio seem to have made a solid sounding slightly-above-entry-budget option for music recording AND streaming/podcasting. Way to go, doubleA!

    Dear Podcastage, there may be an “important” new mic on the market for mobile devices: the Saramonic SmartMic MTV11 UC USB-C Stereo Condenser Microphone. There seems to be few options for a USB-C connector type of cell-phone or iPad. I always lament that I cannot use my Sure SMV-88 on my giant 12” iPad. Yet, this $120 Saramonic mic seems to have the possibility of an omnidirectional condenser mic with the quick plug-and-play advantage of the Sure SMV-88. No cables involved! // I thought I should mention this as no one seems to know about this mic, and there are very few reviews to be found. (Or maybe I just want you to review it for me before I buy it! Ha.) Either way, it seems to be a mic trapped in limbo and in need of some some light! - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole_

    Dear Mr. Parsons. I loved hearing the demo of your new song and look forward to it's release. Would you please sign my 'Eye In the Sky' album?
    Regarding the mic review, I really like the design. At first listen I found it a bit too mid-forward but over time my ears adjusted and I found it pleasing. The main problem I have with it is the esses, which can be quite biting. I wonder if a popfilter would polish down the bite. I think positioned around 10-12" off corner of mouth it might be okay.
    Back to the song... really like it.

    On conference calls, why would you need an active mute button on the mic when platforms like Zoom offer that ability with a simple keyboard shortcut?
    I think this would be great either for people on the road or for those starting out, even for the price. With those features it could double as an audio interface as well as a main mic. Nice, balanced sound.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always have my mic muted even if the software I'm using has a mute button as well. It's an added level of assurance that you're not going to unintentionally speak on mic. Muting yourself quickly while drinking is easier to tap a button on mic than mute on the software. Sometimes you get in massive conference calls and you forget that you're not muted in the software, so having the active mute button on mic is a great feature IMO.

    I have spent the better part of my day watching a ton of your videos and I really love how informative they are especially for someone completely new to this. I'm in the early stages of trying to get a podcast started and I was hoping to get some advice if that's alright?
    The setup is a little complicated since theres going to be 4 people in one room and one remote person (the remote person brings its own technical challenges that I'm hoping to tackle afterwards). I'm torn between the Q2U and the XM8500. Q2U seems to offer a better upgrade path and I could use multiple mics in one computer if I follow your tutorial, but could I use multiple of the same type in one computer? I also can't help but to worry about the 16-bit recording. Unless of course I'm worried about bit-rate for no reason. The XM8500 also sounds nice but getting a 4 mic interface adds quite the price hike (or do I go with 4 indivual interfaces?). And finally should I be looking at preamps considering how many tracks will be stacking on top of each other?
    I'd love to get any advice from you or the community here! Especially if I'm misunderstanding some things from the videos I watched.
    I'm sorry for the big wall of text but I'm deep in the tech rabbit hole now and looking for some ways out! I also sincerely apologize if this comment isn't appropriate in any way for your comment section.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go with 4 XM8500's and a 4 channel interface. Behringer has a 4 channel interface that you should be able to use. 4 Q2u's might give you problems having 4 of the same USB mic on the same computer because I know that was a big issue with USB mics until more recent USB mic releases. 16-bit isn't going to be a huge issue for you unless you're recording super quietly and you need dead silent recordings.

    Hello Bandrew! Could you possibly measure the DC bias provided by the 3.5 mm TRRS jack on the back of the mic between sleeve and ring 2? That would reveal the DC bias required to power the electret condenser capsule in Satellite and Y-Lav. I think these accessory mics may be a good option for devices that only have 3.5 mm plug-in power mic inputs (quite expensive option though). Thank you for the great video as always!

  • @45KevinR
    @45KevinR ปีที่แล้ว

    My rubbish listening environment typically masks the nuance in these reviews, but this mic really loved the instruments both via the 2nd channel or on air. The off axis rejection seemed weak but maybe they've picked a more open pattern,, though it's hard to think why. For podcasting and even music I'd have thought you'd want what you pointed it at and not much else. As your said, for casual use a touch mute would have been nice.
    I think it's impressive they didn't do a "me also" microphone, and is both visually and functionally unusual. Time will tell if those things suit people, but much better than some recent reveals. They also didn't cripple the device by leaving out standard features. It's got more going for it than the recent logitechs, ATRs, etc which have felt like downgrades compared to their previous products.

    • @Podcastage

      Yeah they seemed to have taken a nice approach of designing a fresh mic as opposed to copying every other mic on the market.

    Just a random thought: do you plan to test/assure if usb mics work with ipads or phones? I just thought that this could be a good addition to all of the tests. But I'm no expert. I can only suggest things? not decide on things. =)

    If you use this as a portable podcast studio with the satellite mic, do they get the same or separate sound in the headphone jacks? And, do they show up as the same or separate audio inputs in the computer?

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It all shows up as a single input on the computer. When the satellite is not plugged in you have the mics input on left and right. When you connect an instrument or satellite the main mic is now channel 1 (or left), and the 2nd input is channel 2 (or right). So in your DAW you would arm two tracks, select channel 1 as the input on one of them, and channel 2 as the input on the second track and then you'd have your two input recording. or if you're doing a stereo recording, just create a stereo track and select a stereo input 1/2.
      No matter the configuration. Only mic. Mic + Inst. Mic + Satellite, both sound sources are centered so you don't end up with a left right zero latency monitoring mix. And the mix on the main mic and the satellite is the same.

  • @SparkY0
    @SparkY0 ปีที่แล้ว

    I like how it looks, I like how it sounds. I have generally good vibes toward Austrian Audio.
    But nobody should be spending over $100 on a USB microphone, and really you can get "more than good enough" at around $50. To my ear, the MiCreator sounds only very slightly better than the Blue Yeti, and the blue Yeti usually sounds indistinguishable from any good $50 USB mic. But a few bonus points to AA for its performance in an untreated room.
    If you have $200 to spend though, you'll be getting a lot more functionality and flexibility out of a ~$100 audio interface paired with a ~$100 microphone, give or take depending on what's on sale.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I don't know if I'd go so far to say that no one should be spending over $100 on a USB mic. There are people who need the ultra portability, or just don't give a heck about the added function or complexity that might come from an XLR mic into a USB interface.

    • @SparkY0
      @SparkY0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Podcastage Sure, I'm not saying nobody should buy a USB mic. On the contrary I think USB microphones are great and are good enough for most people making content in front their a computer. What I'm trying to say is that people who want a USB mic can get everything they need for under $100. You're pretty much maxed out on sound quality and features by $100, with $50 being the butter zone for good price/performance. In the $100-$200 range it's mostly paying for style, brand recognition, and maybe a minor gimmick or two.
      There is a caveat though, because the buyer has to be comfortable looking at less-known brands that are outside the xGamerZ flavor of the month bubble. But that's a broad category which includes everything from generic ALLCAPS brands up to MXL and Sennheiser.
      It's neat AA brought some new features to the table. Presumably somebody buying a MiCreator is already looking for added functionality. But, to me, plugging an extra microphone or guitar into your primary microphone is about the same level of complexity as plugging it into an interface. It's slimmer wires than XLR, but now your primary microphone is a hub with multiple wires coming out of it. The hassle and complexity seems like a wash.
      But you know what, I'm open to be proven wrong. I bet you have a wide range of USB microphones and I don't recall USB mics being tested in your diminishing returns video.

    Sorry for off topic but i really need your help.
    Im stuck between NT1 and SE8 for a multi purpose mic. But mainly recording acoustic guitar.
    Theres a few controversy about se8 self noise. I absolutely loved se8 tone in your samples but many people are reporting noticable high noise. On the other hand i feel NT1 is a bit boomy for acoustic guitar and I don't know if it's easily fixable with eq.

    • @Podcastage
      @Podcastage  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      sE reports the self noise of the se8 to be 13dBA. For an SDC that's not terribly high, but if people have found that the self noise is realistically much higher than that, I can't argue with them. If noise is your biggest concern go for the NT1, or if you just want the sound of the SE8 and noise isn't the biggest concern go for the SDC. You can EQ the NT1 to pull out a bit of the low-end and make it sound less boomy so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

    • @mamad504
      @mamad504 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Podcastage on NT1 review you mentioned that you'd preferred if it had more top end and liveliness for acoustic guitar. would say it's something that can be fixed in post?
