You're actually supposed to move your grip one hand length back from the balance point, it give you better accuracy, and makes the spear fly straighter.
I’m not sure why but throwing a spear was always natural to me. Growing up I’d take old brooms, sharpen one end and toss them around the yard for fun. I’m 20 now and my throws cover significant distance with good accuracy and power. I’ve never been taught by anyone just learned from having fun and messing around but my technique is practically identical to the one shown in the vid. Interesting…
how about throwing against a full grown male lion? see this documentary video from the 1930's in Africa. go to 45 minute point and see the Massi lion hunters kill a full lion in only 30 seconds. those of us on youtube who think we are survivalists could never do this in real life. The Massi have even forgotten how to hunt lions by now. They used to live on blood mixed with milk for strength. Amazing documentary! But killing a full male lion in 30 seconds? Amazing!
Obliviously you are NO EXPERT if you grab your spear with your fingers like that because it doesn't put power behind your throw, spears for effective and powerful throws need to be griped with the whole hand.
Timofey Golubov Escuse me but I do Javelin Throw myself and no, they are not whole different skill set, the Throwing biomechanics are exactly THE SAME. There are almost no differences between the Javelins I throw competing and the different spears I have also thron (i.e.: The Spartan Race ones). And Javelins are not thrown to animals nor people because its a sport! But they surely could be used for hunting purposes. If you want to know about spear/javelin throwing check javelin throw tutorial videos, that simple.
Timofey Golubov And you are a very bad hunter, what do you want when you Hunting? or aiming the target? to kill it? or to injure it? Throwing a spear with the fingers is the most efficient technique for accurately hit and stick it to the target, I will challenge you any day of the year to a competition of precision and distance.
if you want more power this old ranch hand from Nebraska, uses a battery, a double (a) battery and electrical tape not quite a 1/3 of the way back from the tip of the spear and tape the battery secure to the shaft. use one finger and it will through the shaft faster than if you used your hand to throw it. the first finger placed in back of battery gives leverage that should increase speed 20% and also range. enjoy and a spear is no worse than hunting with a bow or gun.
This spear is about 1 foot too short and the rawhide-wrap will stop the shaft from penetrating the animals body (compare yours with the shape of a samburu foreshaft you’ll understand) so you waste the best a spear provides: momentum. Yes, this is no sports javelin. Exactly that is why you better do NOT grab it at the balance point but way behind that. Otherwise you just waste speeding-up and power. Once you got used to grab behind the balance point you’ll achieve about 5-7 yards more distance from a standing position on flat ground plus impact power. With a CS Bushman blade on a dry 5ft. stick (6ft over all, 650grams) I can throw 30 yards easily without a run-up and hit a phone book @ 25yrds. For real hunting you either need to go after pigs or very big (and dangerous) game on flat ground or throw as steeply downhill as possible @ the deer-species. This can be done from a tree or a naturally elevated position ( a rock, a hill down to a creek…). Throwing steeply downhill you can achieve an effective range of over 25yards even if you want your target better half this distance or less but in a survival situation you’d better throw than let game go. To be successful with deer I’d highly recommend to bait them with peanut butter from your supplies or apples (mild weather) or acorn, chestnuts (cold weather). Sorry but there are too many survival vids out there which are far more dangerous to viewers than helpful. Inexperienced people all think of hunting first as a way of getting food and they all want to build spears or - even more stupid - bows. This way they waste energy, calories and time and most of them will never ever bring anything down. Scouting a bedding area of deer, putting up 5-7 spring-snare traps around and then push them in on the other hand would get one 1 - 4 deer caught easily, 4hrs work from start to butchering. It is DANGEROUS and does absolutely no good to people who want to learn what really works if the impression gets created that hunting was the first thing to do. It is NOT! Hunting requires a lot of time scouting trails, building ground blinds for different winds and last but not least WAITING WAITING WAITING! The No. 1 thing to do is fishing if you’re equipped for it and have fishing grounds nearby, or, as said, snare trapping combined with pushing in. I bet you won’t get anything with your spear for weeks if ever. Take the rawhide and make some spring snares and you’ll be in trouble instead to choose which deer you wanna take.
He doesn't mention that the tip of the spear MUST begin and end the throwing process pointing in the same direction (at the target). I throw spears all the time and I promise you, if you let the tip wander during the throw, your spear will fly sideways.
I am no expert on Spears or spear throwing but it seems to me your video does beg a question. If javelin's go further because they are balanced better, then why not add something to your spear to balance it better so that it would have more flight to it? Just curious
Not a pro, but I’d say when you’re running, whenever you plant the dominant foot (if you’re right handed it’s your left foot, if you’re left handed your right foot), so you plant and throw, your body should flow with it
hmm what I throw is more f a mace its heavier on the front in fact almost all of the weight is on the front the back is light the back is what i hold and attach sting to it so as it flies its beautiful and the middle front is the sharp part
Not in my experience, and from teaching dozens of people to throw spears. Even when you tell people that, many keep doing it. The worst are those with high skill levels throwing baseballs; they just really want to crank that arm back and twist.
Shotguns and rifles are legal in the UK, you just need a license (Pretty easy to get a shotgun license, a bit harder for a license for rifles). Pistols are legal in Northern Ireland and the Isle of Man but not in the rest of the UK since 1997 (although you can get one if you're a pest control expert I think).
animals usually don't die instantly from it and they could live for days with a spear in them in agony if they manage to run away. you know peta and stuff says so.

everyone is saying "Cato made this cool.", "i was inspired by Cato." no no no no IT WAS MARVEL, however in the book it does say the boy from district 2 throws a spear 15 yards into a dummies heart. But i think we are all referring to the movie, because it looks so much cooler - and no no-one can throw a spear like Marvel, its not actually possible to throw like in the training scene unless you have been training for years, and years and years, which would be very strange...even then i doubt anyone could ( throwing like Marvel means you can throw it 15 yards at like 70mph dead-on... are you Bs'ing me?) '-'
nice film but if I may, put a triple A battery on it about 3rd the way down from point and throw by a finger yes one finger and it will go 25% faster and longer range than throwing with the whole hand,
People are so soft and weak any more, that everything is cruel and barbaric. The reality of the matter, is life itself, is cruel and barbaric for all participants. It is not meant to be soft and weak. The soft and weak, do not last long.
What do people hunt with in the UK? They can't have guns, can they have bows? I mean they even took all of the nunchuck scenes out of Bruce Lee's movies in the UK... lol
People usually hunt over bait with them, out of a tree. Tim wells the slockmaster has taken animals with them. Alot of skill needed to stalk an animal that close and get a decent shot like you said. I think its legal in America but definitely not here in Canada.
Considering a single spear typically doesn't kill the animal for quite some time, often it would be alive after running away from the hit and live a day or more with a spear in its body, in constant agony. It's cruel. Only problem with guns is that they are very loud. If they were quite, it's all we would ever be allowed to hunt with more than likely. But a single shot from even a lower caliber hunting rifle will kill an animal instantly or within the day, so long as you can aim straight.
You can't instantly kill an animal unless you use a very powerful gun and hit the head, which nobody does cause then you can't mount it and its kind of a risk to take cause its a hard shot. And a bow you have to aim for the heart and lungs to hit them all with one arrow, so that you can hopefully kill it quickly and make it bleed out quickly so it's easier to track. So no matter what, when you're hunting the animal is going to bleed out and be "writhing" in pain. You just have to make it quick.
Not gonna lie. I got a good chuckle out of a clean cut, bespectacled, English gentleman in a polo shirt prepared to teach us how to chuck a spear. 🤣
