I once read an interview with guitarist Jan Akkerman and he said that that this song was born in a jam session and at one point, organist/vocalist Thijs Van Leer started yodelling - something he'd never done before. The rest of the band laughed but thought it sounded good and it fit the song, so they left it in.

I enjoyed your reaction and your appreciation for talent that is different. It is always fun watching people react to them for the first time. This is actually a 7 or 8 minute song that they had to reduce to 4 and1/2 minutes for this show so they speeded it up rather than cut any out. This was one of the first progressive rock bands to become popular in the early 70's. They are from the Netherlands (same as Golden Earing). Guitarist, Jan Ackerman, was considered to be the greatest guitar player in the world at that time and was a favorite of Eddie Van Halen and Brian May. Vocalist, Thijs Van Leer, came from a family of accomplished classical music composers, piano players and flutists and was schooled and strongly influenced to continue that family tradition.

Thijs van Leer (keyboards, flute, vocals) and Jan Akkerman (lead guitar) both did solo classical albums. If you happen to like unusual songs like this, you might want to give a listen to Mammoth by another Dutch band called Kayak. It uses an instrument that was never used in another rock song.

They were told to cut it short, to fit into the final 5min slot, so they refused but said theyd play it faster, but then, not only did they play it WAY faster, they get faster each time around and ad lib and do extra stuff. They still did a 6:08 version, and the album version from 1971 was 6:45, but much slower. This is the shortened, edited version. The 6:08 version is out there, and many reactors have covered it, including vocal coaches such as TheCharismaticVoice and FairyVoiceMother, all of whom have an absolute field day with this.

My understanding is that when Focus was to appear on Midnight special, they asked the band to cut their +7 minute song down to 4 minutes. not wanting to cut the song they just played it twice as fast as it's original album cut, After that they just played it at that speed all the time. They actualy started this song as a jam session . a bit of fun and the song lived its own life , it was even used during the 2010 worldcup comercials , and the movie Baby driver.
The Guitarist is Jan Akkerman at the time the first technical guitar player even brian may of queen was a big fan of him and tried to play the part in his early days and admited he failed on more than one occasion .
Thijs van leer him self even performed in the live version of Ayreon in to the electric castle as flute player.
