Easily one of the most iconic, memorable and over-the-top performances in the history of The Midnight Special. I remember watching it live when it was on, and the next Monday everyone at school was talking about it. The song was on the radio a lot at the time, and we all knew the performance was sped up. But, this is what happens when the Network Stage Manager tells the band they only have four minutes to do a six minute song. And the audience certainly appreciated the performance. Focus was, is, a Dutch band, still active I believe.

This was recorded in 1973. At that time the guitarist Jan Akkerman was voted best guitarist in the world by the highly influential magazine 'Melody Maker'. Also Queen guitarist Brian May has been quoted as naming Akkerman as a reference and inspiration for him. Jan Akkerman was years ahead of his time in terms of technique and speed and was actually one of the first yuitarists to includ 'shredding' in his repertoire of techniques. Also most guitarists don't use their pinkie at all during solos or only occasionally as it is their weakest finger. Not for Jan! He played with all four fingers equally important on the neck of the guitar. Something that is still rare to encounter in any rock guitarist even today.

Amazing band. Nothing - NOTHING - is more fun than watching folks' first reaction to this song, especially the first time Thisj Van Leer starts singing :-) This reaches manic levels unheard in their other stuff, but all of their stuff is magnificently played and technically superb. Thank you!

Thijs van Leer is playing with Focus playing Live to this very day. Jan Akkerman was voted greatest guitarist of all at his time. Drummer is a sensation and don´t forget the Bass. They only had 4 minutes to play in this show, so they sped up their 7 minute song in order to play it full through. This is musicianship masterclass.

Who said they only had 4 minutes?

  • @RMForbes505
    @RMForbes505 ปีที่แล้ว +38

That's how you play a 7 minute song when you are given 4 and half minutes without cutting out a verse. Just speed it up to warp speed because you can.

    • @Ulrich.Bierwisch

Actually this is the full 6 minute long version they played live. Two parts where cut out to get down to slightly over 4 minutes. They liked to speed up the live performance all the time. This version is very fast but not fast enough shorten 7 minutes to 4. The link in the description leads to the full 6 minutes on the Midnight Special channel. Most versions on TH-cam show the edited version that was used on TV but the channel has more songs from the original recording in the studio.

Why is this comment on every one of these reaction videos? If you have ever been to a concert, particularly rock or metal, they ALWAYS play faster. Adrenaline, excitement , energy etc. plus the complete version is on boobtoob now. The edited one aka 4 min version was the one originally on . Get it right!!

Thijs Van Leer is the band's star. He is an amazing flautist, organist, composer and arranger. He also has a unique vocal abilities. You should listen to other songs, can recommend Sylvia and Janis.

    - Odd: that was the 'Midnight Special' performance, but somewhere along the line it got edited (which frankly, I think detracts from the song).
    - Original has 5 parts: yodeling, skat, yodeling, flute, whistling.
    - Anyhow, it's a great song, by great (and innovative) musicians. Not everybody's cup of tea, but for those who get/appreciate, it's a unique gem :)

I noticed it too, very odd... Maybe they did a second take, and it was mixed with the first? 🤔 Strange.

I'm pretty sure it's a separate performance from the same night, not an edit. Between the two, there are different drum fills and guitar licks peppered throughout the piece.

Ha, Ha, Surprised to see this one pop up! I already had it earmarked to send. It is in my email draft under the title of "Now for something completely different", a Monty Python saying if you are not familiar with them. I had also included Sylvia, which is a brilliant tune.
Firstly, I believe that this was actually from 1973 and is played much much faster than on the record, which is from 1970/71.
I bought the Moving Waves album in 1971. A Dutch band of course, Jan Akkerman was (and still is) a great guitarist!
    Cheers and regards as always.

Pierre van der Linde is the drummer in this clip. Thijs van Leer is an all round musician.listen to his "Introspection" albums q, 2 and 3. Then you know. Jan Akkerman was chosen as worlds best guitar player in 1973. Bert Ruiter was the bass player. Focus was a Dutch group which was ver populair in Europe .

The original broadcast was from 1973, Akkerman’s first name is pronounced Yan, on drums was Pierre van der Linden, Bert Ruiter on bass, and on Hammond organ, flute etc. was Thijs (pronounced teiss) van Leer (layer), hope this helps.

Nice review man! Glad you enjoyed Hocus Pocus live - it’s about 25% faster than the studio version as they had a time limit on the show. How cool is that? Guitarist Jan Akkerman is s phenomenon and still playing at 76. The drummer is Pierre Van Der Linden and he’s still playing Focus stuff with (Tice) Van Leer, about the same age. Supremely talented musicians. Hocus Pocus was a bit of a piss take - most of their other work is classically/jazz inspired rock. Their main work was 1970-1975…take a listen and enjoy. Akkerman is incredible.

5:16 "He's growing on me" Maybe my favorite Perk's Recap quote ever!!! Great reaction, man! And thank you so much for the plug of my pod and for having me on yours...I had a great time! Regarding Jan Akkerman, I became aware of him listening to/reading interviews with Uli Jon Roth (another all-time great who isn't a household name in the U.S.). He always listed 2 guys as major influences: Jimi Hendrix and Jan Akkerman. Well, I started diving in and wow, is there a treasure chest of amazing material out there between Focus and his solo career!

thijs van leer, jan akkermann, pierre van der linden and bert ruiter..and if you look at the way they are playing, they hardly move (except the drummer, of course) - in order to make the same "noise" as focus, the who (or any other band in those times) , would have had to jump arounf and smash their guitars..so this is pure instrumental technique , done by classically formed musicians...and if you want to know, what akkermann is capable of, watch this ! th-cam.com/video/TzRv9k_JoYs/w-d-xo.html p.s. unfortunately, bert ruiter hes passed away in march 22 RIP

You got fooled: The yodeling part around 6:40 and the guitar play around 7:03 is edited (bars repeated) and not real (original recording th-cam.com/video/GyxSvZOby54/w-d-xo.htmlsi=aKIRgsNQvWcHnwpF&t=165). Nevertheless, this band has always been my favorite from my home country, the Netherlands. They invented the music style "fusion", far before everyone else.

  • @dolfvink7416

Nice reaction. This song grew when they were just jamming. Jan Akkerman had a riff which he played and when it stopped, Thijs started yodeling. Some one must have told them to record it.... But there is a much better way to tell the story behind this song. Thijs Van Leer told it himself.

Jan akkerman was world famous in the early 70's while Jimmy Hendrix died in 1970. Do you have any voice or written references from an interview with Jimmy Hendrix saying that thanks in advance. 🙏

That's exactly what the trailblazing 70's was all about my friend. "Different , and Wild" . People like this who were insanely talented , but not afraid to create an entirely new path of expression in music , helped form the diversity that brough us bands like Rush, Queen, Elo, and on and on and even up to including Michael Jackson. If it weren't for these virtuoso nut jobs , that few really understood. We would never have the main stream genius that we all completely got and loved.
