  • This African Black soap using the Hot Process method was inspired by the Ghana people. Noted for being extremely moisturizing and beautifying properties, this soap has many uses as a bar soap, shampoo and as a laundry soap for the Ghanaians that make it. I have strived to create a recipe as close to authentic as possible, only the process is a little different. Loaded with Shea Butter and other regionally inspired butters and oils, other ingredients include Plantain skin and Cacao Nibs. This soap is packed with nutrient rich properties to help in healing scars from acne and help dry, flaky skin from eczema. This soap is unscented, as is the authentic product to let the raw fresh earthy aroma of the ingredients shine through. This soap is excellent for all skin types. I hope you enjoy this video and I hope it inspires you as well.

    The ashes of the plantaines and other plants are there to make potash out of which saponifies the oils into soap. The traditional black soap has karité butter., palm oil or kernel butter, coconut or and olive oil in it or whatever is available in their production over in Africa at the time. Where some people use burned plantain peels, some might use cocoa pods, tamarind and/or banana leafs.

      I really want to try this, but does the roasted plantain leaves increase the lye level with se of NAOH?

    Great video. I was just wondering are you able to use African Black Paste instead of the coconut infused version?

    Hi!!! Thank you so much for this video! It's amazing!
    I was wondering if you could answer a few questions to help me perfect this recipe :)
    1. Can you add witch hazel at all to this?
    2. How many cups of the lye solution do you use? And is that the same thing as vegetable glycerin?
    Thank you sooooooo much!! :)

      witch hazel and glycerin are two totally different items - no where even near the same.

    TFS..a quick question does it make a difference in the finished product if the plantain skins are ripe I.e. darker in color or if they are yellow like the ones that you used?🤔🧐🤷🏻‍♀️

    • @mayflylife
      @mayflylife  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for your question. The color does come from the blackened plantain skin and the nibs as well. One point of drying the plantain is also to remove moisture content. I've not tried it with ripe plantain, but you could try using it that way. I hope that helps.

      Hi Venus, thank you. I'm so glad my videos are helping. Although you can use the soap right away, it's best to leave it cure for a week or 2 to allow it to harden further. ❤

    Great video Karen! Thanks for sharing! I'm wondering about the Plantain peel. Do you roast the skin with the fruit taken out of it and is it roasted to the point if being crispy or very brown? And do you mix that in with the nibs and coconut oil? Sorry for all the questions! Thanks!❤

    • @mayflylife

      Hi Susan. Thanks for your question. Yes, I remove the fruit from the plantains and bake the skins until crispy brown. I'll grind them after they have cooled to a fine powder. If you want to throw them in the crock pot as is, you can or if you want to add them to the nibs with coconut oil you can do that as well. I hope this helps.

      The plantain peels are turned into a charcoal which is then used as potassium hydroxide to saponify the oils into soap.

      The first butter is cocoa butter and I also use sustainable coconut oil along with the shea butter. These are some of the traditional oils and butters used. I hope that helps.

    How is it now black soap when you used lye. I thought the plantain peel will ack as lye.

    • @mayflylife
      @mayflylife  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes you are correct when it comes to the lye, however, this is a Black African inspired soap. I would love to make authentic, but to me to be truly authentic it can only be produced by the wonderful artician soapers and villagers from various nations of Africa. This is my homage to the people that create this wonderful soap. I hope that explains it for you. ❤😊

    Lye is not used in black african soap

    • @mayflylife
      @mayflylife  28 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @TheDivera Hi Vera, you do understand that this is an African Black inspired soap, right? In authentic African Black Soap wood ash is used, which is, in fact, lye. As most people in North America don't have access to actual wood ash, lye is a replacement to recreate saponification. Reminder. I said this was an African inspired Black Soap.

      The video is a demonstration of how I make one of the products from my online store. I provide a guide for you to create you very own recipe and exact quantities or ingredients are not given. The key is to research the particular soap so that you can create your own. I hope you can understand this reasoning.
