Ozai's face reveal is very well done. For two seasons we only see him as a silhouette, mostly behind a wall of fire. Because of this and his actions you'd think that he would look like a monster, but when we see his face it's that of an ordinary handsome dude. Goes to show that no matter what one looks like, anyone is capable of atrocities
The contrast between Ozai and Hakoda speaks volumes. Ozai is unworthy of the title of father because his love is strictly conditional, while Hakoda demonstrates the unconditional love of a father.
29:26 I can't imagine how unbelievable hard it was for iroh to not say anything. He always is so loving and always willing to teach and share wisdom. You know it broke him to have to let Zuko learn this lesson the hard way. I know iroh can't help but sit there feeling like he lost another son to the war 🥺🥺🥺😢
I like the episodes in the Fire Nation because they illustrate how life in a totalitarian dictatorship can be, but also that most of the people there are still regular people. Dehumanizing your enemy has been done for millennia, to make war easier to wage, and has been the cause for countless tragedies.
I love the contrast between Hakoda and Ozai too. For the same reasons (because they're right after another to show what a true father is, immediately contrasted with Ozai). Another thing that I realized after repeat viewings, though, is the difference between how Katara and Zuko _act_ around their fathers. When Katara is angry at Hakoda, she feels free to express it, and Hakoda comforts her afterwards. Zuko is silent and on his knees, knowing that he can never truly express himself around Ozai or there would be hell to pay.
Unlikely. Azula is more likely to see this as an opportunity to show Zuko how much smarter she is. And it's manipulative to do so under the guise of "looking after him".
@@xbatx69 She just really enjoys watching other people suffer. The beach is a perfect example of just how out of touch with human emotion Azula is. Pretty much the opposite of what you're saying it is.
I always defend that Azula moment where she warns Zuko not to visit Iroh too much is genuine, casual sibling talk. I think this show could've thrown a bit more of these scenes in, and there are a few more to come, but....without missions and her supposed failsafe for the Avatar's survival, she has no other dynamic with Zuko than just being his sister. He DID help her with a major victory, and I believe she appreciates this. It might be the one time in the series someone helps her in such a crucial way. Like Mai and Ty Lee. she is more or less friendly to her allies. It's true that Azula intimidates, that on mission, she has fought and tried to capture Zuko, but....they've been doing this most of their lives, lol. They fight and say hurtful things, and carry on. In these moments, where Aang is supposedly dead, the Fire Nation has no true opposition, and there are no pressing missions, Azula simply sees a situation where Zuko could be needlessly punished. The way it's animated, there's no malice, it's almost endearing. You get this in Ep 5 of course, but its still rare.
In the Braving the Elements podcast the show creators talked about the Fire Lord reveal and while a lot of people had crazy expectations because of his constantly hidden face, they really were going for exactly what you said-- that he didn't *look* like a monster, he just looked like an older version of Zuko.
All love is conditional. There comes a point where love degrades to indifference or even hatred. I’ve seen it happen to someone. And while not pleasant, they got what they deserved.
I really like Katara in this first episode, the bending shows how far she's become and keeps improving beyond just a master. Also her voice in the emotional moments are beautiful.
I just want you to know that you are my favorite react channel by far. I feel all those emotions right along with you. Thank you for sharing that empathetic heart of yours with the world. a.k.a. premium content.
Being reanimated after a lightning strike isn't that miraculous at all, what are you talking about? Kataras healing ability can easily mend the basic burn injuries left by the lightning, and all you need then is to restart the heart. As long as circulation wasn't out too long, that's a pretty normal medical process.
SoFie: It's just Aang. He can make friends with anyone. Even with the fire nation kids. Me: What about the fire nation teenager? From a very bad family? Who were raised by his uncle. Don't answer. We'll see.))
I have a dark fan theory regarding what Aang was trying to do when he ran away. He was traveling towards the Fire Nation. He was still badly injured and weak. He stood no chance against anyone with even a modicum of skill. I think Aang was committing suicide by Ozai. If he dies the pain, shame, and pressure end. The next Avatar would be born in the Water Tribe. They have the the means to train and protect that Avatar in all ways except, of course, air. Water covered. Finding an earth bending teacher(Toph) easy. Fire bending teacher is more difficult, but Iroh anf Jeung Jeung were just two masters with different world views. There are surely others. Hecwas either gonna die or hope he entered the Avatar state if pushed hard enough before dying.
So. Now that we are in the 3rd season and you have seen all the bending, I have a suggestion for the representation of the elements. Just think of Astrology: the signs have four elements. Myself? June 25, so i'm Water Tribe!
Well, avatar being dead is not necessarily a bad thing - remember, everytime the avatar dies, he/she is reincarnated as a newborn. Meaning, you the 'evol people of the planet' still have roughly 15-16 years to mess things up while the avatar grows and trains. Now obviously, there must be an unspoken/unknown 'system' to identify the avatar as a baby, yet keep it a secret, else all a bad dude has to do is show up to baby avatar's home, kidnap baby, throw baby in an iron jail for whole life and congrats, you have permanently neutralized the avatar by jailing him/her as a toddler. Perhaps this is why the identity of the avatar is kept a secret till they are like what ? 12-13 years old and ready to embark on training and its onus of their trainers to keep them safe from evil guy showing up, tossing him/her in iron jail and gg avatar. Now, this all means, that the evil guys are on a timer from 'death of last avatar' to 'new young avatar emerging 15-20 years later' and since the avatar spirit is immortal and sentient, the avatar will enact brutal retribution if you have been excessively bad while he/she was growing. At least, that is what makes sense to me.
i get the emotional setup and story there trying to tell, but i dont care how long I didnt see my fathet, as a 14 yeat old, there is no way in hell I would have got away with that attitude,. js lol.
I know you're ahead on Patreon, so I can tell you that Iroh not speaking for the first 5 episodes of the season was done mostly to honor Mako, Iroh's original voice actor who passed away from cancer. The creative team knew that it would be too jarring to go from Mako to the new voice actor so soon.
@ Zuko's VA is the one that compared the Fire Nation royal family to the Lannisters. Azula's VA said if Azula went on a life-changing field trip with Zuko then she'd get pregnant.

In the Beach, that “this place is depressing” scene is one of the few slip ups she’s has.
Iroh doesnt speak in these episodes because the voice actor for iroh just passed and iroh remaining silent was the a tribute to his passing
You actually saw Aang shaving his head in "Tales of Ba Sing Se" last season.

I love the cinematography in episode 2 in the jail. It is constantly framed as if Zuko is the one imprisoned and begging for escape.

it isn’t?

Fun Fact, Firelord Ozai is voiced by Mark Hamill, the actor that played Luke Skywalker
The dance Aang and Katara do is actually waterbending forms
Yes. Aang died from a lightning strike. Katara naturally raised him from the dead. Miracle. Don't ask me if love is involved here. Because YES.
