@@irahubscherjr6629You know she's gonna want to build her dart after she made that fast of a pass!!! I love seeing Tommy and Billy's women racing right along with them now can't wait to see Molly get her car dialed in. Also looking forward to see what upgrades Allison does to the dart now!!
@hangfire6368 8.8 rears are tuff and have proven they can take a beating. 9 inch rears with full float axle hubs are simple and fast to swap out. They all have their place. Cheers!
I love that falcon that is by far billys best investment he hàs made i love that its not all cut up and still has the stock dash and that it can be a street car . Ŕeally a well put together car.
@richardlucore6813 I just did the gear set in my 10 bolt last weekend. I wish I had that because the decent pattern I got with my setup bearing changed a little bit once I pressed the actual bearing, but it's not making any noise, so whatever lol
if you think about it, its like a large GM power steering pump pully remover, its the exact same design and concept , only larger. When I worked in the dealerships back in the 80 and early 90's we had to knock the cage off and split the race base, . seeing these knew innovative tools they have today makes me a little jealous, that thing cut 40 minutes off that job easy .
I believe that Yukon Gear has a crush sleeve eliminator kit for the Ford 8.8. It is designed for extreme applications. It consists of a solid bushing and shims to replace the crush sleeve. It is designed to positively control the location of the pinion. The crush sleeve is designed for ease of installation for street differentials on the assembly line. If you are assembling the rearend "tight" in anticipation of it "loosening up on the first hit" than you have a sign that the kit is needed. (The pinion shim doesn't compress. The crush sleeve is acting like a spring under load.)
Saw the falcon and had to click. Cool watching this kind of video. Had gears installed on my old mustang 8.8 and now need to take my Dana 60 rear end to get 4.56’s out in
Surprised and impressed at the same time that they are using Jegs brand gears, surprised they hold up , but impressed that they are quality enough to use . Good to know!
They get the job done.... they are also marked with pinion depth measurements for set up. So there is no question about if it was set up correctly or not. Honestly.... they have performed well where we have used them and in this car we replace them bi annually for preventative reasons. In this case they also wanted a gear change from 390 to 411. Other than the pinion shim getting forged into a sliver.... everything else looked great. Cheers! Thanks for watching!
Lucore Automotive for the win! Good job Rich, great play by play. Real car guys are always fun to watch when they are thinking out loud when figuring the next move. Keeping Tommy safe and out front. The Falcon is a beast, very well built car.
as a 72 old auto tech and 42 year shop owner I like to watch some one still working . one tip I would like to give wear nitrile gloves when you can. Costco has them and they are very good and cheap. p.s I loved my clam shell bearing removers. I had 3 sizes.
Thanks for watching. I'm doing better at wearing gloves but I'm old in my ways. The bearing puller is the best tool for doing this job. It makes the process so much easier! Cheers!
I’m aer 8.8 to get it to stop tearing up gears, we got rid of the crush sleeve. We used it to set our preload and then bought a solid kit pulled it out after we crushed it down and had the correct preload that we wanted it back apart put a solid one in, never had a problem again unless the teeth ripped off
You did a professional job of that swap! and I love that bearing remover set. I just always used a press. That's a ton easier and faster. You might consider shimming the preload, with a squash sleeve eliminator kit. I never use a squash sleeve in my race cars. they, as you saw with the hammering of the depth shim. squash sleeves give it a place to start moving. I never had a problem with that pinion hammering stuff after using a solid spacer & shims. I always had 302 & 331sbc, stick shift stuff, and leaving the line at 9K is pretty tuff on rear ends 🤕 Love the channel
There's at least 15 pounds of rubber in the wheelwells! I cleaned the rubber from my car once when installing new sheet metal. Swept up the rubber and filled a gallon ziploc. That bag weighed over 10 pounds i think it was 12 or 13. If you need to take some weight out of your racecar dont miss this opportunity!
Rich it’s the crush sleeve!!!!Pinion is loose every year because that much power is crushing the sleeve past the preload just slightly and beating the shims to death since it has end play. The yoke nut is staying where you put it because it’s a lock nut. Crush sleeve or not probably needs inspection and refresh every year but please next time spend $50 and try the crush sleeve eliminator. Either way your work has held up well but that thing was a weekend or two away from destruction.
I could put a solid spacer in it but when the pinion shim collapses, the result will be the same. The Solid spacer is a choice, not a requirement. To add to that..... the crush sleeve is more of a spring.... the only force on the crush sleeve is the lock nut. All forces of the ring and pinion act outward on the bearings and bearing races. (There is no inward force on the crush sleeve/spacer to make it compress other than the force of the nut)
HARDENING there is old school with a scratch awl, heat and oil quench. In our off road vehicles we don't use a crush sleeve chromoly or M300 ground to spec, shims we also make out of the same material its the only way a rear end will live. I am surprised the crush sleeve is not a problem. Good video
Regarding your comment about floater kits for the 8.8, Yukon makes one for the Explorer 8.8 and Millerbuilt appears to be working on a kit according to their website.
Little heads up on removing the wheels/tires, put your vacuum pump on them and “shrink” them and they come right out or take one shock loose at the time and let the rear drop on that side. Glad to see them be more proactive vs reactive, easy to let the diff go to long before a check up though
Should have put a rockwell in there 🤷🏼♂️ All bs aside, the explorer 8.8 in my falcon has taken some serious stickshift abuse and it still hangin in there.
Success is having people you can count on. Trust. Friendship. Great vid. Always educational. You all love ur jobs and take pride in your work. That's what America is about. That 1 is definitely taking a beating.I know where that 1 comes from. That's Tommy's Falcon every time?I've watched most of the time and let's stay tighten in front shock sound. The falcon doesn't real stand and then takes off
Great video. Question for you. Why not go to a solid pinion spacer? I had to on my 8.2 BOP rear end as I would run it hard and after several cycles find the pinion bearings with too much clearance. I was collapsing the spacer which I verified by taking measurements each time it happened. Again great video and thank you.
Hey Rich, how is your Skylark doing ? Any upgrades to it as of late? I’m the Buick guy that Loves it. I once had a 70 GS 455 Convertible that’s talked to you multiple times. And on to the falcon, I can not believe they haven’t upgraded that to a 9”. Maybe they will send it to Tin Soldiers this offseason. Sure would make your work on it easier.
Question. Have a ford galaxie 500. With a 445 stroker in it. With 9 inch rear trying to do sum research on rear end gears. I want power. To play with like at the strip , but I want to be able to drive it on the weekends and take it on the highway what would u suggest , like 3.73 ?
@williamlout7459, it's from Yukon Gear. Yt p22. There are copies of it available out there, but I would speculate that they don't do the job the same. It is extremely effective and worth every penny if you do this type of work on a regular basis.
