Crowd Culture at Shanghai Disneyland

  • DisneyDwayne finds out what the general behavior of the crowds are like in Shanghai Disneyland. Be prepared! (What I didn't capture was a little girl who pulled her shorts down. She was naked and running around for a good amount of time. I just couldn't and it would be wrong to film it. Also another bunch of schoolgirls who were pulling and snatching for more stickers than already offered to them by a Cast Member. Not forgetting a whole crowd of people opening every emergency exit door they saw to go exploring).

You may bitch about the chinese, but without them buying all your fancy watches, purses, jewelries and perfume, you would all be in poverty right now. Capitalism bitches, kiss your personal space goodbye. Now you join the world crowd. :)

I'm a Hong Konger and I do acknowledge myself as a Chinese as I'm a part of the race. However, the mainlanders(Yes, we call the Chinese in China as mainlanders in Hong Kong) are just not civilised AT ALL. It puts shame to the whole race. They simply don't know how to behave. Even in Hong Kong, "a part of China", the mainlanders always jump the queue. They squat on the street and sometimes even take a shit publicly. They don't give a shit about all those behavior.
We Hong Kongers are so glad and RELIEVED that Shanghai Disneyland is finally opened. We no longer need to keep up with those shit they bring upon to the Hong Kong Disneyland and us.

God, I went to Beijing Zoo and some kid was peeing into the panda enclosure. Dodgiest thing I've ever seen. It really reflects badly on their people even if they only represent 1%. I've never heard of any westerners (Australian, at least) piss in the middle of the park or in the zoo unless they were piss drunk or high.

a lot of chinese people were born into very unprivileged backgrounds, many of the rich mainlanders you see coming into north america now only very recently became rich
I grew up in canada and had to spend a year of my life in china, it was truly a culture shock:
the conditions these people have to live in are very sad, even larger rich cities do not provide people with the most basic health and sanitary environments
a lot of these problems stem back from decades of corruption from the communist party, china use to be a land full of respect and love, that's how the japanese and korean got a lot of their customs and values, its so sad that modern china has forgotten all of these beautiful philosophies

I have lived here for two years, and I have done a lot of travelling, even to small towns. I don't know how you describe basic health and sanitary environments, but even in small towns they still had basic health requirements... in large cities the living standard is basically the same as the developed western world, if not more developed in some parts

燕慕若 Funny. I've worked in Shanghai for over two years. No more. I've experienced the poor behavior of your people, first hand, personally. I am born and live in Hong Kong, and I found that you know the turth exactly right!
Since 1997 transfer of sovereignty, I just saw how people corrupt our homeland in Hong Kong, especially after the scheme about mainland Chinese individual visit to Hong Kong.
We collect back a little bit our ancient culture our ancient traditional about REAL CHINESE. Sense of propriety, justice, integrity and honour. The funniest about this is, we got these back under British governing and protect Hong Kong people from mainland China at the doom of 1949-1997.
But now Hong Kong we had the transfer back to China 19 years. I see only the end of our Hong Kong. I want to defend our culture and our life but we failed, only thing I can do is watching Hong Kong fall just like a cities in Mainland China.
May the last flame of true Chinese culture keep in Taiwan forever and ever, but they also facing huge challenge too.

Jerry, I feel your pain. My wife is from Hong Kong and we spend quite a bit of time there. The decline from 1997 to now is shocking. I don't know how much longer HK will hold up. Most of our HK native friends have already emigrated out to the U.S., U.K., and Canada.

    • @jerrychf
      @jerrychf 8 ปีที่แล้ว +18

I didn't think we can hold up more another 10 years. To be told, this 4 years CY Leung to be the chief executive in Hong Kong and made everything corrupt super fast than other reason!
What we saw, we found just like mainland China government style ruining Hong Kong, every single part of us.
      Bloody happen here:
      - 5 bookseller kidnap to mainland China by China police in Hong Kong
      - Royalists cheating elders in council voting
      - Significant international air security cause by chief executive family
      - Chief executive CY Leung bribe happen by UGL company
Damm, we can told the story more and more, but all about that was how had Hong Kong right now.

I had a flight from Chicago to Salt Lake City full of about 30 Chinese tourists sitting behind my seat on the airplane and that was the worst Flight Of My Life. They had a fascination with using the bathroom every 10 minutes and they were super Amazed by the sink and continuously filling up the bathroom for the whole flight. They would also kick my seat and stand up and lean their arms on my seat. There was even a guy laying in the aisle stretching his legs and for some reason all of them ignored the seatbelt sign and we're walking around the plane so that the captain had to come on and order them all to sit down.

I am actually not surprised with the behaviours shown in this video. Most Mainland Chinese people have been doing these things all over Hong Kong. I am really glad they build a Disney park at Shanghai coz less Mainland Chinese people came to Hong Kong. I still think their behaviours are disgusting, but its okay (or somtimes fun to watch/observe) as long as they are kept on their soils.

Anyone who lives/lived in China knew Disneyland was going to be a gong show.
I live in SH, and will never go here. I've learned to avoid heavily-congested areas, and choose to walk (if possible) during rush hour rather than take the subway. China has built some pretty cool cities and infrastructure, but still has a LONG way to go when it comes to civility. Unfortunately, the cultural revolution is to blame. I'm hopeful though. I've seen huge improvements in behavior in SH over the years.

How do you cope breathing in all that pollution bro?

    • @SeaToSkyImages
      @SeaToSkyImages 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Well, SH isn't as bad as most of China thanks to the ocean air currents, but in relation to the West, it's pretty bad air.
I limit my exposure outside if it gets really bad in the winter, and wear a mask. In the summer, air quality improves considerably thanks to storms and typhoons coming in off of the Pacific.
Overall though, you get used to it, and fully appreciate the clean air when you go home.

The queueing time for attraction ( like Tron / Pirates of the caribbean ) was same like other disneyland theme park ( 30 mins - 2 hours ) , toilets are clean and no queuing , the food is so delicious too . And the staffs there are very helpful too ( *I don't speak chinese) . It's totally unexpected ! We also had plenty 'empty' space to take photos . Basically, It was FUN , and still recommended to go

Was waiting for our delayed flight to Langkawi, and it was almost 2 hours. When the moment we heard our first flight delay announcement people already went walking around or shopping or just sit on the bench so we will not block the corridor. Then this one Mainland Chinese family, thought they were being the first in line and just won't stay away from the waiting room door, the only group that glued to the main entrance, blocking the staffs to moving in and out. Finally our flight is ready to board, the family just won't backup and the staff just slammed the door on them. I have to say, Good Work!!!

I realize what you were trying to do with this video and I appreciate it. One of the big things with picking a travel destination is the local culture. You want to know how people are likely to behave so you can decide whether it is worth your time and money to visit. I have been trying to decide between a trip to Tokyo Disney and Shanghai Disney. Politeness matters to me. How the guy in line next to me is likely to act will directly impact my enjoyment. It is not racist or bad to note cultural differences and how they will be perceived by people of a different culture. The mother allowing her child to pee in public may have been perfectly appropriate from a Chinese perspective. It is absolutely inappropriate from my point of view. Letting me know it happened helps me decide which destination is better for me and my family. Your video helped me decide that Tokyo Disney is the better vacation for me. Thank you. I appreciate you getting me this information and I'm sorry you were treated so badly by those with nothing better to do than wait around to label someone else a racist just because they don't like what you had to say. Again, thank you.

I think it's funny that you mention Japan while talking about being pushed and shoved because I have to say, when I was in Japan I was in shock when I was pushed and shoved in the subway.I saw an elderly Japanese lady get pushed and stepped on by a group of Japanese men and they did not say sorry. The day I got there some guy pushed me while I was rolling my luggage. I was only there for 10 days.

I went with my cousin late last year and I had a wonderful time at SH Disney. Honestly, the crowd culture truly isnt much different in Shanghai than in other major cities. Yes mainland China is not as developed and not as exposed to Western culture but it has come a long way as a developing country. Growing up in both the U.S. and in Shanghai in various points of my life have given me a humbled view on developed and developing countries. China has come a long way and still needs to go a long way but we cant deny its progress. Plus going to Disney in China is the cost equivalent of a month or two of the average person's salary so a lot of people are going to try and take advantage of as much as they can of the time allotted at the park (the park closes around 9pm due to train stations closing around 11pm) and there are few hotels in surrounding areas other than the Disney resorts (which are hella expensive).

  • @LGGETAWAYS
    @LGGETAWAYS 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I think this is during the first few months of the opening! I just been there and it was not as bad as this. There is no crowd and actually look a bet intimate with all the Christmas songs on the back ground. Or maybe bec it is winter there is no crowd and it is the week day. SO if you want to visit it the best time is during winter months and weekdays.

I was fully expecting this behavior during our visit and I was so happy it was not the case for us. Of course, we visited in January. It was cold and off-season. The park was a ghost town which was a little eerie, but made for walk-ons on all attractions, and no crowd issues or concerns. We have experienced a little of this in Hong Kong Disney at times, and as you mentioned - Never in Japan as the crowds there are amazing!! I would have to say the worst behavior we have experienced is Paris Disney - the rudest guests and no staff to help you. Thanks for the videos - we go back next January as well, hope the crowds stay low :)

Been working in Shanghai for 5 years and seen big improvements in behavior. One can only hope they will continue to recover from cultural revolution.
During the cultural revolution, youths were encouraged to beat up and humiliate their parents and teachers. Thousands of teachers were killed in Beijing alone. Good manners were discouraged because manners are for "snobbish bourgeoisie" only.

You are judging people based of their situation, why complaining about the guy trying to charge his phone? maybe he has to make an emergency call and he really needs to charge it somewhere, why complaining about the little boy peeing? maybe he couldn't hold it. It’s just a KID! why complaining about strollers? I see them everywhere in Disney World, you want to force babies to walk? Why complaining about the girls who could enter with the selfie stick? they are not hurting anyone. Why complaining about people using umbrellas? Didn't you know that it is the best way to protect yourself from the Ultraviolet light even if it’s not very hot. You are an Idiot.

Spent 8 months living/studying in China, can confirm. Things like holding doors, waiting in lines, or helping strangers who just dropped their belongings are frequently foreign concepts over there - though obviously not everyone there was like that, far from it. More educated, richer people tended to 'get it', and not step over or ignore others so blatantly. What was so strange was, for the people that did behave poorly, it didn't seem to be willful ignorance from what I saw. It seemed most had just never been taught the difference between wrong and right when sharing a public space, or to think about people other than themselves.

True that, but I don't go to places like this alone, usually with a female... and usually if the female is with me, she is badass enough to help me in that situation.
The other trick is to be totally passive aggressive... stand and don't move when the line in front of you moves and turn around and look at the people crowding you. Tell them "I am gonna move up but I want you to stand back and give me space" kind of look. They will get the message.

I just got back from a visit to this park on July 9-10, 2016. I observed none of the behaviors reported in this video. There were no signs of vandalism or graffiti. The culture around waiting in lines is different in China than in the UK or the US -- there is more jockeying for position, especially if there is not a well-defined lane for the line to form in. However, although I had a bit of trouble with this in other parts of my visit to China, I had no problems with bad queuing behavior at Shanghai Disneyland. (If you get there at park opening time, be aware that people will run to the Fastpass line or the attraction they want, rather than half running, half walking the way they do in the US.) The only minor annoyance was that, near park closing time, some trash had accumulated in the waiting area for one of the rides (similar to that shown in the video at 1:27). The Disney personnel are impeccably friendly and polite, and most of them speak at least some English. I had a terrific visit - not the same as the Florida or California Disney parks, but of course that’s part of the point.

Hi from Singapore! Thanks for the video. I've made up my mind. I will not be visiting Disneyland Shanghai despite being a huge fan of Disney. This really confirmed my concerns about the social etiquettes that I would have to experience when visiting there. I was already having doubts when they were still under construction because I've been to China multiple times for leisure, and that was where I drew the conclusion about their general local social etiquette. I'm so heartbroken, as a Disney fan, that it being an extremely gorgeous and large Disney park was quickly vandalised, and disrespected. Idk man... I'm just really really upset right now. BUT Disney as a corporation wouldn't think otherwise because IT IS driving up very high revenue, and they wouldn't pass a chance like that.

This is my first time to comment on TH-cam. First of all, thank u for letting us know about these facts in my country. I am a 90s Chinese and i feel so ashamed after watching it. But we have to face this issue right now, because Chinese people's manners indeed do not improve as our economy expands, which is pretty pathetic. When i was young, my 70s mother exactly told me to do what u have shown in the video, and i felt really ashamed at that time and swear never be like that as i keep showing my manners at present. In fact, those Chinese who were born before 1979 would not show and teach their children what the good manners are at all because of lack of education. However, this would be changed by 80s and 90s parents, which accounts for very limited part of China (10%?) Anyway, we are already very concerned about these ugly behaviors, but it takes time to change. Afterall, we are much more laggard than those developed countries when we just established our country in1949. So, please! Give us more time because no country could be perfect while it's developing. Hope all of u can understand and be considerate and patient. Thx very much.

On the other hand, criticise people as scums, losers, keyboard warrior.
I can understand why it is hard to communicate with some of netizens from mainland China.
I think you are little better than those 50 cent party members in mainland China. At least you know how to use psychological theory and work overseas.

These are the people who are ashamed of being Chinese although they are totally yellow. Putting the white men on the pedestal is their favourite passtime.

Dude for the soaring above the horizons ride or whatever it was called there when I went the queue time was 75 minutes and you had to wait in the most narrow corridor ever for the whole time, it was also over 30 degrees Celsius that day and there was no air conditioning covering the area. Also like 3 little kids jumping around in front of me and climbing on the poles while teenage girls accidentally stood on my shoes from behind every 5 minutes lmao

what is really sad is all the budget cuts Disney world cast members have had to endure for this park. not even getting 40 hours a week (for a long time now, long before the park even opened due to them going over budget), limiting necessary supplies for day to day work, cutting things for OUR guests, all due supposedly to "shanghai" and now people are literally shitting on it.

Yes, this is pretty accurate of life in China and they do have a very high threshold for bad manners. BUT - If you don't like it then don't go to China :-).
Thailand is nice as is Japan.

I went to Shanghai disney back at the start of October. I was there a day after the national holiday week finished, and whilst a lot of the issues Dwane mentions are true (re: personal space and pushiness) - I was polite and firm about saying, "no, I will not let you past" or "please don't push" and this seemed to shame people into behaving properly most of the time. Never had to tell people off at any of the other Disneys though (US, JP, HK)! I got really lucky-the park was "quiet" by shanghai standards. I didn't wait more than 35 mins on any ride (which is very short, compared to 100, 120 and 150 min wait times on busy days), and was able to go on all the rides I wanted, more than once on several of them. The point is - it really depends on what day you go.
Camp Discovery is AMAZING though - I recommend going purely for that experience. The theming is so on-point. So, just go knowing that there will be a bit of pushing and shoving now and then, but it's such a beautiful and amazing park that it's totally worth it.

That's the one thing I didn't take the time to do. Camp Discovery. I need to go back. In any case, you were luckier in that the people I told to please not try push past me didn't seem to want to cooperate. =(

I am kinda be use to the rudeness cause we got so rude people in my school and i go to china every year cause pretty much all my family lives their, but yea, my mum thinks it wont be to busy when we go cause its a Monday, but if we were to go during Chinese new year week she thinks it might be really busy, plus the tickets are more expensive on a holiday and on weekends. We are aiming on going to every single attraction and see the entertainment, And hopefully it will be like your experience that i get to go on all rides more than once! Not looking forward to rudeness.

It is part of their culture. We visited Shanghai for 3 days (carrying a 10 year tourist visa), I swear it was a big mistake to travel to China. Most people are rude and no etiquette at all. We met a couple of American-Chinese families visiting the country and they promised not to come back! I recently renewed my passport and I didn't even care if I lose the 10-year tourist visa to China! On the other hand, I would come back to Japan anytime, people are so friendly and helpful.

This clip and those comments make me sad. I admit that some Chinese are not so nice, but many Chinese have started noticing their manners. We are changing and we need more time. Huge population is indeed a problem. Plz don't use "the worst" to describe us because these words are rude too.

I thought this video wasn't very fair for a couple of reasons. First of all, you said you're from Singapore (if I heard correctly?) and from my understanding, Singapore is an incredibly clean and small country. I went to Shanghai Disney and I honestly had a really good time - which could also differ based on the days we both visited. You have to remember china is still a developing country and there's a billion people who live there. The way of life and crowd mentalities are going to be completely different to what you're used to and what you saw in Disney Japan. A lot of this video just seemed like problems that could easily be fixed. I've learned that as an American in china is incredibly frustrating with the personal space issue, but I just subtly push people out of my way since they obviously don't view it as rude (as you saw when entering the park). Same with the umbrellas, I would've just either pushed in front of them or pushed the umbrella down. Sorry you had a bad time though!

Hey Samuel. Thanks for your comments. This video presents one aspect of the park. I've made 12 other videos of my Shanghai Disney experience (some on the way). If you're speaking of fair, I'd say that all 13 videos represent my fair experience. And I didn't have a bad time =) I can't help if people choose to focus on one video or see that I am racist or am not understanding of where the rude behavior comes from. Trust me I do. I still don't condone it. I still find it annoying. But it doesn't mean I can't highlight it right? I do features on my channel and bring up issues or news. I have more to say here in a loving funny response video th-cam.com/video/QgGtMgjwoas/w-d-xo.html

+Disney Dwayne actually I just finished watching that video before I saw this notification. I kind of thought of eating crow and deleting my comment because I understand better now that this is one of many videos that just so happened to get fame and I jumped to conclusions like everyone else 😁 I'll go watch the other ones from Shanghai, I'm excited to vicariously relive the Tron ride experience.

Hey buddy. it's all good. If you want to delete it I can do that for you. However, I like that the chat history is there and it highlights how easily we ALL can misunderstand each other. And our example is how if two people stay open, we can come to an agreement. It's when both parties start attacking that is causing world problems we face now. I couldn't be happier I was unexpectedly shoved into some position to influence some social responsibility. So I'll keep doing what I can. Peace!

    Yes i know
I am here in holiday in Hong Kong for a holiday. When I was checking out of mine hotel and was busy with it a mainland Chinese skip line and ask if she could check out. The staff of hotel asked her to move back in the line.
But general of the mainland Chinese, not Hong Kong Chinese, are very rude and not social or adapt to the culture of the county.

I would say my ethnicity is Chinese but since my families are already rooted in Taiwan for more than 100 years and I born there, I'm so glad that I can put my ethnicity on "others" and write" Taiwanese" , the only sad thing is when I say I speak Chinese and all the people just connect it to "I'm a Chinese"
NO! YOU SPEAK ENGLISH BUT YOU CAN BE FROM USA OR GB~ I SPEAK CHINESE BUT I'M NOT FROM THERE !

+Patrick L Exactly this. For the previous commentators, just read the other comments and you know that only you guys (Taiwanese, Hong Kongers, Singaporeans, Malaysians etc) like to think of Chinese as nationality. The others think of Chinese as a race, so when they hate on Chinese, they hate on you as well. In fact, even the Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese get the hate because of their looks..

    • @yaya5tim
      @yaya5tim 8 ปีที่แล้ว

I said my ancestor COULD BE Chinese but not exactly because the only thing that my family know is, we're rooted in Taiwan for at least 100 years.
Many people like you two think that Taiwanese is basically just Chinese for race, but in the case of talking about being Chinese in race, it's about 80%! and many of are mixed maybe 100 or 200 or even more years ago!
and NO, it's not I think of Chinese as nationality! it's the people all around the world,
when they found out that you're a foreigner and ask where you from and the language, They often(about 90% of the time) just think "Oh So you're Chinese from China"
and I don't feel Chinese this race could united together when they have a common threat or something, they just divided themselves into more small and more clear small circle
like Chinese kids born in US then they bound themselves together and judge Chinese from China, Taiwan, and other places.
But basically I'm just Taiwanese for race and nationality, that's it and nothing about Chinese
