I have sailed through the Panama canal twice on United States registered vessels. I applaud your content as this has been a subject close to my heart😊👍
I don’t understand the rail component because it can take a few days to offload a container ship and a day or two to load up on a new container ship. It doesn’t seem like it saves much time unless you are splitting up the loads onto multiple ships anyways that’s the only way it seems to make sense.
Every day the ship sits in port waiting to cross the canal costs a lot of money. A three week wait means we all pay more for everything they transport.
The transistmic rail road allows for larger ships to unload in Salina Cruz and the containers to then be loaded onto smaller ships in Coatzacoalcos. These can then ship to various West Coast USA ports, saving time and money in the logistic. There are also many Mexican services that would like to use the Transistmico that currently are forced to use the Panama Canal, as infrastructure and internal logistics in Mexico are very expensive.
As western countries standards of living collapse imports will drastically be reduced. The era of buying useless products is over. Retail stores in the United States are closing. There isn't the need for alternate trade routes. Just as an aside I currently reside in Panama 😊.
Guess what, standard of life of non Western world is improving.. The West is only 13% of the world population... As countries develop and people get richer, they will need a lot of stuff...
So you're going to offload a ship, transport across land by rail, and then re-load another ship on the other side? I guess it's better than nothing, but I can't see how that is going to be very efficient. What they need to do is widen the Panama Canal or just build a much larger canal nearby. The Nicaragua site is okay, but there appears to be shorter additional sites right there in Panama. To the east of the canal there are a couple spots just as narrow as the canal except for the lake. That's your best bet.
It isn't against America it is FOR the Chinese people, Something you americans forgot how to do. China hasn't invaded anyone. America is the one invading other countries, so who is the greater threat to world peace and security? Oh buy the way America spends more than twice that amount on its military than China does, so again how are they a threat to America?
Totally overlooked by this presentation is the Panama Railway. Owned and operated jointly by a combined U.S. and Chinese company. They provide container transfer service for high value comodities .And daily passenger service.
It's certainly a winner for China, but it causes poorer and medium size countries to get into excessively high levels of debt. Africa and Indian subcontinent show them. China doesn't do things for free !
Why is the US using the canal at all? If they produce products on the west coast for Europe, just have them transported to Texas by rail and then onto a ship…no canal needed!
Want to 'save' the Panama canal? Up water reuse. The new locks were designed to save water, but are so much bigger they still use vast amounts of water. The old locks need to be so upgraded. Water discharged down stream during lock operation should get pumped back up using wind and solar power, which exist is VAST amounts there. Reservoirs could be covered with floating PV farms like in Japan, and power their own recharge from downstream pumping. At sea level D DAY size concrete cassions could be floated into harbors to impound fresh water discharge from locks and rivers, and pumped back up the canal system to it's impoundment lakes and reservoirs. Sure the water would be brackish, but near shore freshwater discharges it would be mostly fresh. Ask the people of Panama, pristine eco system already destroyed by locks and industrialization farming human wastes, or some brackish water in the lower areas of rivers. You could even add sea level locks of just a few feet to the sea level reservoirs to reduce salt water inflows more. You could take in scrubbed carbon and embed in concrtete sequestering if for hundreds thousands of years, and make money doing that. You could take in trash, solar dry it, run it through elec generating stations, and sequester the ash product in the concrete work. Getting paid by developed countires to take wastes, bet you could make them pay to build out facilities to dry and burn it, then sell them carbon capture credits. Then there is paying surrounding areas, countries for their water, so they can make more money selling water to Panama than the Chinese will pay them fyi China rarely 'pays' for the work. The receive vast land grants of land owned usually by pesants lucky to feed themselves off it, and of the port facilities and transport itself, so China will reap almost all monies made moving materials.
The same people who are whining about America spending money in foreign countries are the same people whining about China investing in foreign countries
As someone who works with logistics and has spent two decades in Latin America let me tell you: none of these projects will ever compare to the Panama Canal. - Colombia: the Darian Gap has the worst geography of the group: swamps, jungles and cliffs. It is also controlled by FARCs (narcoterrorists). - Nicaragua arguably has the least troublesome geography to transverse, but it is a dictatorship and corruption runs deep and any infrastructure will be delayed, overpriced and unsafe. - Honduras: besides corruption, it has the longest route and the most mountainous of this list. And it will be dependent on rainfall just like the Panama Canal. I just don’t see it being cost effective. - Mexico: the most promising of all complementary projects. However, transport by train usually is more expensive than ships by a factor of 3. The only thing that makes it cost effective now is the fact that the Panama Canal is overburdened. Mind you that all the conjectures above regard only commercial shipping: the Panama Canal is also of extremely strategical importance to the US as it is used to connect its Pacific and Atlantic fleets, something that Mexico’s interoceanic corridor will never do. Expect the Panama Canal to be widened even further in the future. We’re just going to have to figure it out how to make it less dependent on rainfall or get used to higher prices on imported goods (the arctic routes won’t be feasible for at least half a century, likely more).
Widening the canal won't fix the problem. The canal is a marvel of genius engineering. The whole thing is operated by water and the drought is the biggest problem.
Ruining the great fresh water lake Nicaragua would be an ecological disaster of epic proportions. This lake provides fresh water for most of Central America. I'm surprised China is still involved in the Mexican rail line. USA has used considerable "neighborly" influence to push it out. I haven't seen any news on the upgrading of the two ports or when this rail transport route will be open.
Dude! At 4:49 you incorrectly stated the name of the Panamanian president who established diplomatic relations with China. It wasn't Laurentino Cortizo, it was Juan Carlos Varela! Today Malaysia is making a railway line call ECRL with China from West Coast to East Coast of Malaysia 665km and once completed easy to transport container by train from West to East coast or vise versa....
This is what happens when U.S. government disregards these issues when it comes to business entity investing all over the world strategic ports. No man is an Island.
I don't think they make many bad decisions unless you can enlighten me. How is it that China trying to benefit their own people is a bad decision? You're probably an American whose country CAN'T build anything anymore and its infrastructure is crumbling. Why do you see other countries trying to making their lives better as a mistake or a threat? Fix your own house before you go preaching to others.
If you've ever played the Chinese game of"GO" you can understand what is happening. The Chinese are placing their stones in strategic locations very early. China is playing GO while the West plays checkers. By the time the US and EU figure out what's happening it will already be a done deal.
Today's computer-programmed logistics give these train-port logistics a lot more flexibility to different ports worldwide, the Panama ships to limited large ports only... They might build even more railroads in the future!
Yeah except people would like to think that Chinese capitals always have nefarious intents and are connected with the CCP while Western capitals can get away with razing the Amazon Forrest and they are just their own entities who are not answerable to US. In some way, that's true but they are often exaggerated. There is always this Cognitive Dissonance that no one is immune to.
Costa Rica had a rail line from the Caribean to the Pacific, it was damaged in an earth quake in the 80's. I thinl it should be repaired and ease the truck traffic on the higheay and compete in transport of goods from ocean to ocean.
Now that would be both an environmental disaster as well as an economic disaster. Mixing the pacific with the Gulf would cause invasive species to inter both environments and likely result in fewer numbers of the species that Millions of peoples lives depend on.
I think it is only Panama government officials and its citizens get to decide what they want to do with their canal and how to run it. US, China and the rest of the world should respect that. If Panama wants to raise the transit fee to beef up its operation and govt budgets then it should be able to do that. Shipping companies can freely decide if they want to continue transit through the canal or around the Cape Horn. It’s capitalism at work.
Except there was an agreement between the US and Panama when the canal was handed over. If Panama hasn't held up its side of the agreement, the US can take the canal back.
Because most of the water in the canal is fresh water not sea water. This water sustains the lives of around 2 million people. Even with little to no rain people still have to drink, bath, grow food, etc.
Video says the wrong thing a few times. Says the rail was to carry sugar from Hawaii to the west coast. There is no need to cross latin America to go from Hawaii to west coast of the USA.

I don’t understand the rail component because it can take a few days to offload a container ship and a day or two to load up on a new container ship. It doesn’t seem like it saves much time unless you are splitting up the loads onto multiple ships anyways that’s the only way it seems to make sense.
Because you can wait almost two weeks two cross the Panama Canal . So even with that railroads might be a faster alternative.
Every day the ship sits in port waiting to cross the canal costs a lot of money. A three week wait means we all pay more for everything they transport.
Time is money. Waiting two weeks or more means we all pay more for whatever is being transported.
But I don't believe that it's adequately financed, and certainly so far no Chinese investments.
The U.S. should thank China. They are trying to solve the logistics problem the U.S. is facing.
The US will be removing China from Panama soon.
There have been plans for a canal via Nicaragua for more than 100 years.
As western countries standards of living collapse imports will drastically be reduced. The era of buying useless products is over. Retail stores in the United States are closing. There isn't the need for alternate trade routes. Just as an aside I currently reside in Panama 😊.
Yes, we can't afford cheap anymore. The future is for long living quality products.
@@gargoyle7863 If you can't afford cheap, then how can you invest in quality product that lasts?
What the hell is a "Western" country? From MY AMERICAN perspective the west is Asia.
Guess what, standard of life of non Western world is improving.. The West is only 13% of the world population... As countries develop and people get richer, they will need a lot of stuff...
@@kaimanyu586 And non Western countries need China crap or do they value domestic quality?
So you're going to offload a ship, transport across land by rail, and then re-load another ship on the other side? I guess it's better than nothing, but I can't see how that is going to be very efficient. What they need to do is widen the Panama Canal or just build a much larger canal nearby. The Nicaragua site is okay, but there appears to be shorter additional sites right there in Panama. To the east of the canal there are a couple spots just as narrow as the canal except for the lake. That's your best bet.
I'm Panamanian, at 4:47 it was Juan Carlos Varella 2014-2019, who established diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.
Come on
They have a new route planned for the canal in Nicaragua
brilliant quality
Chancay port in Peru is open
Time to make them an offer they can’t refuse. The media has once again not done their job reporting what is going on against America.
I totally agree. Make'um an irresistible offer.
You DO realise they WILL "Refuse" and USA wont't win?
Typical inane braggadocio. Where were the "offers they can't refuse" for the country that did the USS Liberty attack and 9/11??
It isn't against America it is FOR the Chinese people, Something you americans forgot how to do. China hasn't invaded anyone. America is the one invading other countries, so who is the greater threat to world peace and security? Oh buy the way America spends more than twice that amount on its military than China does, so again how are they a threat to America?
You meant from Hawaii to the United States "East" Coast when mentioning the Mexico rail road. Good info in general
China has 24 years of holding these two ports, why they complain now? Isn’t that strange?
Trump is looking for an excuse to invade Panama.
Totally overlooked by this presentation is the Panama Railway. Owned and operated jointly by a combined U.S. and Chinese company. They provide container transfer service for high value comodities .And daily passenger service.
It is interesting that the existing rail line in Costa Rica from coast to coast is not mentioned.
Good report
Belt and Road is a winner and offers a second economic choice for so many
It's certainly a winner for China, but it causes poorer and medium size countries to get into excessively high levels of debt. Africa and Indian subcontinent show them. China doesn't do things for free !
Wow makes me want to travel to Panama.
Why is the US using the canal at all? If they produce products on the west coast for Europe, just have them transported to Texas by rail and then onto a ship…no canal needed!
I trust the news about as much as I trust a weather forecast for next month.
I believe that long range forecast get it right far more than wrong. Your living in the wrong century.
Interesting 🧐 🤔
Πολύ καλή προσπάθεια. Ευχαριστώ για την ενημέρωση.
Is it too difficult to carve a channel through the thinnest part?
Competition is good. Well.....unless you are America which does not want any competition.
Exactly.
Those are some nice arctic penguins you found!
Good work 👍
The same people who are whining about America spending money in foreign countries are the same people whining about China investing in foreign countries
Typical western negativity that results in inertia
@ k
Sounds like time for the spirit of old Teddy to come forth once again...
Panamá has a railway owned by USA and is barely used through much shorter
America MUST take these threats to security , seriously.
Can they make the Panama Canal wider? May be double capacity and address the bottleneck concerns for at least a few decades.
Widening the canal won't fix the problem. The canal is a marvel of genius engineering. The whole thing is operated by water and the drought is the biggest problem.
probably make the 2nd, parallel to the existing one is more make sense. make it wider break all calculation of the whole system.
I have to wonder if engineers have considered the viability of creating a super-sized machine to dig canals rather than use a bunch of small machines.
There is an error in this video. It says sugar from Hawaii went through the isthmus of Tequantepec to go to the east coast of the USA.
Not in Mexico they’re not
Min 4:48 that is ex president Varela. Not Cortizo. Not sure if this mistake was on purpose for interaction.
Aren’t ocean levels rising,why a water shortage?
🤫😂
Really?🤣🤣🤣
Dude! At 4:49 you incorrectly stated the name of the Panamanian president who established diplomatic relations with China.
It wasn't Laurentino Cortizo, it was Juan Carlos Varela!
The video is great but this was honestly a very amateurish blunder!
Source: I have lived in Panama for 8+ years and was born here.
12:31 Wariness by US?
Today Malaysia is making a railway line call ECRL with China from West Coast to East Coast of Malaysia 665km and once completed easy to transport container by train from West to East coast or vise versa....
Nicaragua Canal is the logical choice to build a Mega canal that can handle the newer mega container ships.
The US is about to taste it´s own medicine
China will taste how is it like to make business in Latin America
Its own medicine? China isn't building military bases everywhere.
Only Chinese can do mega infrastructure projects.
Mega fail
Nothing too hard for the Chinese to build !
That's why America jealous them !!
On this scale absolutely yes. We all remember the movie 2012. Only China can achieve huge Megaprojects on a short basis.
This is what happens when U.S. government disregards these issues when it comes to business entity investing all over the world strategic ports. No man is an Island.
Not only that.. they have presence in other small ports in Panama. And letsnot mention their presence in the Panama Free Trade Zone
This is going to result in Transportation Infrastructure "Overcapacity". 😊
Haha!
Which is better than under capacity. Dude stop being so negative, it is clouding your ability to think logically..
Riddle Me This. How is it that China has unlimited credit to spend wildly and never bear negative consequences for bad decisions?
big export import surplus. china have real hard money, not just credit.
What’s up with your erre?
What ever happened to the Nicaraguan Canal ?
Sorry but the inter oceanic railway is owned by Mexico and not china at all
Being from that part of the world, I couldn’t care less if many ships have to wait very long. They don’t carry anything that I am interested in.
That in not accurate China has no ownership of the Itami of Tehuantepec in Mexico.
the last music is it from eschalon: book I? a videogame
Why not? Capital is always looking for profit!
At 7:30 the rail line across Mexico transported sugar from Hawaii to USA EAST coast.
Geography.
El salvador already build a brand new port to move containers to the honduras ports
Modern technology & efficiency able to easily create another waterway & better than Panama Canal
I agree with your comment !!
with the ability when american spend 5 years to repair a roundabout?
Always have an alternative, also be more innovative. That's the way forward, just be resourceful for your country's future needs.
This is obviously made a an american republican. PROPAGANDA TO HELP INVADE PANAMA
Costa Rica had a rail line from the Caribean to the Pacific, it was damaged in an earth quake in the 80's. I thinl it should be repaired and ease the truck traffic on the higheay and compete in transport of goods from ocean to ocean.
Without any help from their military complex peaceful country
China is playing Chess ♟️ and the USA 🇺🇸 is playing checkers 😅
We demand to build a new sea level Panama Canal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That'll be 10 years, plus money USA doesn't have.
Now that would be both an environmental disaster as well as an economic disaster. Mixing the pacific with the Gulf would cause invasive species to inter both environments and likely result in fewer numbers of the species that Millions of peoples lives depend on.
Geez, what century are we now?
I think it is only Panama government officials and its citizens get to decide what they want to do with their canal and how to run it. US, China and the rest of the world should respect that. If Panama wants to raise the transit fee to beef up its operation and govt budgets then it should be able to do that. Shipping companies can freely decide if they want to continue transit through the canal or around the Cape Horn. It’s capitalism at work.
Except there was an agreement between the US and Panama when the canal was handed over. If Panama hasn't held up its side of the agreement, the US can take the canal back.
Why cant the water that flows out of the locks, be stored and pumped back into lock, and reused constantly?
Because most of the water in the canal is fresh water not sea water. This water sustains the lives of around 2 million people. Even with little to no rain people still have to drink, bath, grow food, etc.
They are not competing with Panama it’s a cooperative effort.
Video says the wrong thing a few times.
Says the rail was to carry sugar from Hawaii to the west coast. There is no need to cross latin America to go from Hawaii to west coast of the USA.
There definitely needs to be a second canal. 😮
