Claudio Gentile....probably the toughest defender of that era. I remember the classic quote, "either the ball will pass me or the opposing player.....but not together!"

The truth is you don't have to know much about football to understand what happened on that day - Diego was too much class for Gentile, completely outsmarted him everytime and Gentile couldn't stop him playing football, so HE resorted to playing rugby (look at Diego's torn shirt after the game and at his bloddy shins and ankles). I am from Holland and i share STADIOAZTECA opinion. Passarella was also brutal, especillay with his elbows. But Passarella was also a wonderfull footballer, great passing, great leading, and heading, he even had a pretty good technique.
He was amazing at stopping the threats of the oppositions star man , but to be fair he could also play a bit of football he was just allocated to do a number on the most dangerous attacking players and came out on top most of the time & It was key to the Italians success, I personally loved the guy back in the day when football was a contact sport , I loved a tackle not like the game today where contact of the slightest touch and they go down like a hooker's knickers.
I am French (non biased) and clearly remember Claudio Gentile as being one of the most elegant and efficient backs ever. He was very far from the brutal style that the Argentinian defense was playing.
This era was only surpassed by the 60's for hard players. I loved to hate them as I understood that era had players unable to be stopped legally. It was the football I grew up with, played by gentlemen.
