The only "rule" about cappuccino in Italy is that we don't drink it with a meal, so restaurants usually don't serve it. That's all.

@alaALBI you can be Italian and never have been in Italy, or not actually know the culture, like a lot of italians in America... I grew up in Italy as well as you probably, never met anybody drinking a cappuccino in a bar after 12. At least in Umbria, the region where I grew up, I never saw anybody do that. I myself only drink Caffè macchiato so it doesn't concern me at all. Just saying my experience in a lifetime spent there

About sharing the pizza, here everyone order their pizza and eats it, having a slice of another person's pizza is allowed of course, but it's not a habit to order a giant pizza and everyone eat slices, everyone has their personal pizza.

    • @HealthByGrace
      @HealthByGrace หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Yes, and pizza is seen as a one person dish too, about a plate size... even though you might share. Whereas in america you order A pizza based on how many people there are, there are always different sizes. A pizza isn't seen as one portion size. I find the bread is also not as "heavy" in Italy if it is a good pizza.

In Italy there are also 1-meter pizzas. It's a big pizza and you can decide on multiple flavors, and that way you can share with everyone without ordering a single pizza per person. However, I'm more used to the second one.

As they say "le regole sono fatte per essere infrante" ("rules are made to be broken").

In Italian's restaurants tap water is allowed, it is not forbidden, but according to the law, the carafe or jug MUST have a label to communicate to the consumer that he is consuming treated water (from the aqueduct). Finally, as mentioned previously, in Italy the aqueduct water is drinkable by law and subject to rigorous quality controls up to the meter of the buildings. Therefore it is the responsibility of the owner of the building to ensure that the water maintains its original characteristics and healthiness in the passage from the meter to the point of use, whether it is treated or not.
This underlines the importance of proper maintenance of domestic water systems and any treatment systems by all restaurateurs.
In order to avoid these complications, bottled water is provided.

They don't give tap water because in Italy, you pay for the water as a utility, so if they start to give "free tap water," they are gifting the water but still being charged for it.
Also I believe it's for safety reasons cause bottled water is always checked and safe.
however, if you ask for a glass of water they will give it from a blogger bottled water to you without any problem, sometimes they could ask for a few cents, it depends on the generosity of the place.

In Italy, especially in Milan where I live, there are drinking fountains called "vedovella" with clean, fresh water everywhere you go, in the streets, and in the parks you have those machines where you can have sparkling water even (you just need to swipe your tessera sanitaria (card) but sometimes it isn't required, and healthcare is free btw so everyone has this card). So ordering the same tap water from restaurants is quite weird and also quite bad for business. Don’t feel guilty in any way for being a tourist, because, in fact, you’d probably be, and feel free to enjoy Italy the way you prefer, following the tips just gives a more “genuine” feeling to the trip, and a much deeper understanding of how we live, but you don’t have to, no one will chase you for anything, they’ll probably just be a bit stunned.

Since Italy is not isolated from other countries, we know that tourists might face difficulties with the language or use different terms for things. A good barista will likely speak English-maybe not at a C2 level, but well enough to help you order whatever you'd like. The same barista can usually customize any product, often at no extra charge if your request is reasonable. They’ll also forgive you if you greet them with just "ciao," considering most Italians do the same, even if they're not close friends (some good old habits are fading in Italy too). Italians have also been influenced by foreigners who enjoy a cappuccino at any time of day-so now, it’s like, "Tourists drink cappuccinos at 5 PM? Cool, let’s do it!"

    Italian responds:
    1. It’s a bit weird but if you do it it’s not wrong
    2. Latte is literally milk so you should say a “caffè macchiato” or “latte macchiato”
    3. We usually have cappuccino at breakfast, but if you go in a bar and ask one they give it to you… just some restaurants don’t do cappuccino
    4. Again we usually have sweet breakfast but if you go in a bar they usually have also sandwiches or toasts. Its a little harder to find eggs
    5. Fish with parmigiano tastes bad so they will look weird at you if you ask for some and in most cases not give it to you. Its like asking ketchup on pudding, it’s really weird
    6. Cocktails are like for before or after but yes wine or beer are normal. Yet I feel like if it’s not an hour thing (some restaurants from like 8 make only dinner) you can do it. You will be looked at weirdly tho.
    7. It could be dangerous to drink tap water and anyways they won’t give it to you. You have to pay for a bottle. But in some cities (expetially Rome) you find little water fountains to drink. But they’re like made different, so if you don’t see any, do not drink from fountains please.
    8. Again cappuccino is usually for breakfast so it’s weird. Just order an espresso
    9. Usually we sit on a bench or something but yeah if it’s a little snack we just eat it
    10. Pizza is for one person! Its less full of things so it is easier to eat than in other countries, but if ur with a friend you can ask: “can I try your pizza?” If it’s like a close friend or a family member we usually just give them a slice
    11. No pineapple on pizza absolutely, you may be asked to leave the restaurant if u ask for some
    12. Omg no that tastes so bad! Don’t do this please just eat your pizza normally, again would you put ketchup on turkey? No!
    13. Yes don’t drink more than one glass of wine.
    14. You either shake hands or yes, this rule is right, you might accidentally kiss someone.
    The end

In Italy, sharing pizza takes on a completely different meaning.
    There are usually 2 cases:
    1. Normal round pizzas usually serve 1 person = 1 pizza. If you do not want just one flavor and you someone in confidence at the table you can agree to exchange half of your pizzas in the plates. The result will always be 1 pizza = 1 person but of two different types. It is not widely used really, a lot of confidence between those doing it is essential, almost as if it were something intimate.
    2. In case of large groups or parties, not dinners at the pizzeria, many take-out places offer pizza by the meter. Literally half a meter or a whole meter of pizza, as wide as a regular pizza but elongated and squarer at the corners. It is cut as soon as it comes out of the oven into rectangular parts so it can be shared. This is the only real case of sharing, but more often, even in groups, as many round (regular) pizzas are ordered take-out for each diner.

I am Italian, and I have been running a bar for over thirty years. I confirm what some others have written in this chat before me. Some requests might seem strange, but there is no reason not to accommodate them: the customer can always order whatever they prefer, as long as it is on the menu. One of our proverbs says: "The customer is always right." This doesn’t mean one can be rude or make unreasonable demands, but it does mean that everyone has the right to order what they want without being judged for their preferences.
Do you want a cocktail with gin and ketchup? LOL, but why not?
On top of that, I, or any of my colleagues, fully understand that a foreigner may have different habits from ours, so certain requests shouldn’t even seem that strange to us.
It's also not true that breakfast has to be sweet; this probably depends on the region as well. At my bar, for instance, every morning, in addition to croissants and various pastries, we always have sandwiches, pizza slices, various types of Genoa focaccia (even with onions or olives), or focaccia stuffed with ham or salami. By noon, everything is sold out, and almost all of my customers are Italians.
On the other hand, it is also true that if someone asks me for a "milk," I will serve a glass of hot milk, without coffee. However, if it's an American asking for it, I make sure to understand exactly what he want. After all, we know we don't speak the same language.

Some rules are a bit different based on where you are in Italy (north or south). For example, in the north you can find some places where they make some toast for breakfast (brioches and other sweet foods are always present) but never eggs and bacon, or sausages and beans. Just a toast.
Also, always in the north you can find pizzerie (places where they make just pizza) that are peculiar, for example, once a friend of mine tried a pizza with pumpkin pureed soup and speck, and she said it was good. But you will NEVER find fruits as ananas with tomato sauce, they just don't go well together.
Another thing, you can ask for a cappuccino after breakfast, but as an afternoon "snack" (merenda in italian), so not before 16:30 p.m.

I call BS on a few things: 1) the "forbidden capuccino" in the afternoon. You can have cappuccino all the day, if you want. They will only give you nasty looks (if they don't refuse to serve you) if you order it as a drink with meals. 2) only pastry for breakfast: you can have whatever you want for breakfast: we just don't have eggs, bacon, beans and so on. But you can have any kind of salty sandwiches you want. 3) in bars they give you tap water for free if you ask for it, without any fuss, and even if they have filtered water, probably is still free. Purifying and filtering tap water is becoming increasingly popular in restaurants: this way it is always chilled and tastes good (sometimes tap water is not chilly enough and has a chlorine aftertaste that goes badly with the flavor of the food). In any case, unlike in many other foreign countries, bottled water is extremely cheap. Drinking tap watering order to save money, will not affect your bill. At all. 4) We have plenty of street food: no problem to eat and walk (focaccia or sandwiches or fried stuff, in Genoa usually small fishes) or other typical products. 5) we can share pizza. Usually with people who know each other well and no more than a quarter. Often is a fair trade: we can exchange slices of pizza. 6) there are no rules about kissing on one or another cheek first: we just improvise. 🙂

The sweet Italian breakfast is not an anomaly. We must go back to the Roman Empire to see how, thousands of years ago, breakfast consisted of a variety of foods that reflected the culinary art of the time.
Among the most common sweet dishes were libum, a sweet bread made with honey and ricotta; luncunculus, a cream puff; and globus, similar to modern bomboloni. Romans often enjoyed figs and dates for breakfast, appreciated for their natural sweetness, along with bread drizzled with honey-a simple yet delightful combination.
These sweet foods were an important part of Roman breakfasts, typically accompanied by drinks such as milk or sweet wine.
Thus, ancient Romans began their day with a meal that combined sweetness and nourishment, creating a morning ritual rich in flavors.
In contrast, in more recent times, cowboy breakfasts were characterized by hearty and savory dishes. This type of breakfast arose from the practical needs of men working hard on ranches and prairies. Cowboys required substantial meals to face long days outdoors, often under adverse weather conditions. Consequently, their meals included protein-rich foods such as bacon, eggs, and sausages-providing the energy needed to tackle daily hardships.
The choice of savory foods not only reflected physical needs but also a lifestyle focused on productivity and resilience, standing in stark contrast to the sweetness of Roman breakfasts.

Capuccino, it's not really really the truth. i take capuccino's instead of coffee, even in the afternoon, but like a coffee. Because coffee is too strong. However, cappuccino should not be used as an accompaniment to meals, only as breakfast or snacks.
If you came in italy, in Genoa, you need to try our typical breakfast, Focaccia e Capuccina. One slice of Foccaccia in one hand, capuccino in another..... mmmm che fame! (i'm hungry now ^_^ )

As an Italian I can tell you that the ALWAYS sweet breakfast thing is not true, most people eat something sweet, but for example I, who am from the South, eat a lot of puff pastry pizzas for breakfast. At home I personally eat a toast with cooked ham and a coffee.

Italian here, Trust in me, if you ask for a cappuccino even in the afternoon you will have a cappuccino, no problem. Maybe if they have already clean the coffee machine someone can refuse to do it , or you ask for a cappuccino during your meal they probably suggest you not to have it.

I'd say that the things showed in this video are to follow if you want to blend in and don't follow the turist stereotype but they are not fornidden in Italy. Many italians don't do them just because we are raised this way so it's just normal to us to - for example - drink a beer during meals. Maybe if a turist orders a cokctail it'll be strange but in reality we don't really care.
