    Peter being savage with pruning makes me feel good. I realize he maintains hundreds of plants, but the fact that he is completely unafraid of a hard prune emboldens me to do the same, even if I have fewer trees to cut back.

I'm not a young man and I love horticulture and finally get to work on bonsai. I breath so much easier planing and making cuts. When I wire I talk it through as I have watched you do so many times. I realize you don't speak this way , but for our benefit. Thank You for your time, I see it as a gift.

  • @MAMLeers
    @MAMLeers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Dear mr Chan, a few thoughts if you don't mind. Fine-tuning the styling and pruning of a smaller pine bonsaï or even a shohin or even a mame size pine bonsaï, in a rather progressed state of training and development, would surely "scare" some people away. I think that part of our beautiful hobby (or art) is really something else and really not that easy and it takes a lot of knowledge and perhaps experience to do that right in all aspects. But at the end, I think there's nothing wrong with that and with trying to achieve a certain level of the art of bonsaï and the trees we're trying to shape and develop. Bonsaï is my hobby for several decades now and I'm still trying to improve my skills and results and I guess I will do so for the rest of my life.
    Your overall goal, for quite a few years by now, is clearly to make bonsaï more accessible to everyone and I think you're doing a more than excellent job referring to that and it's also quite clear that I'm not the only one who higly values your videos and tutorials. They added quite a lot to my knowledge and understanding and I still am closely watching every single video!
    However, it is not a competition in my view. There are surely quite some "basic" instruction videos to watch on TH-cam (some good, some not good in my opinion), telling people about general knowledge and techniques and showing them. But there are also more sophisticated and specialised sites with videos to watch. After all, there's nothing wrong with watching an expert, working on a masterpiece of bonsaï, isn't it? One can enjoy and learn a lot of that too, in my opinion. But indeed: these instruction videos are perhaps less recommendable for beginners. Perhaps they are simply another kind of bonsaï videos and tutorials, with a value and meaning of their own and another goal. My suggestion for myself and other beginners would be: begin with the beginning, enjoy and the rest will come...

    • @peterchan3100
      @peterchan3100 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I leave the more sophisticated and advanced bonsai techniques for other teachers to teach. My mission in life is to introduce bonsai to the masses. I do not consider myself a master.

    • @MAMLeers
      @MAMLeers 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@peterchan3100 Yes, I can understand that very well. And I think your mission is an extremely succesful one for sure! You do not consider yourself a master but thousands of people do, including myself. Inspiring so many people (I also read many of the comments...) and also teaching them at the same time, for so many years and in such a sympathetic, low-profile and easy-going way: in my eyes that makes you a true master. It might be true that there are other bonsaï masters, with other specific skills. However, that changes nothing in your skills and I think that the worldwide bonsaï community has a lot to thank you for! So once again, I salute you mr Chan and I really hope I can visit you sooner or later at Herons and meet you: I would consider that as an honour.
