Props to Jimmy for understanding the architectural importance of the home, and fighting to preserve it. He won the case against Spirit re: Stairway, and despite the age difference, he's been with Scarlett for many years now.

That's ridiculous. Jimmy Page is wealthy; he's earned an Order of the British Empire (OBE) award. In 1984 Jimmy was seen wandering around Victoria Train Station in a shabby manner and the police found a bit of cocaine in his pocket. That happened twice I believe. He is just a tremendously gifted musician - producer - songwriter.

My father looked at Tower House when he moved our family from Birmingham to London in the late 1950s. He was going to buy it from the guy who sold it to Harris. But in the end he decided he didn’t want to have to mow the lawn so instead he got an enormous apartment around the corner in oakwood Court. Its just as well I wasn’t brought up in Tower House because we’d have totally wrecked it (five out of control kids - we wrecked the apartment)! But it was cool having all those amazing musicians around the neighborhood growing up. We knew! My best friends in oakwood Court, their mother was bringing her two kids up alone and to make ends meet would rent out rooms to lodgers. I remember a very friendly tall, lanky American who lived with them for a while around 1972. They said was a drummer. He was associated with a band called Curved Air. Really sweet, high energy guy. At least to us kids. Used to give us piggy back rides down the hall (very tall ceilings in Oakwood Court). His name was Stewart Copeland and he went on to form a band called The Police. In the 60s and 70s W14 was a very good part of London to immerse yourself in the music of the time, as it was being created. Edith Grove (where The Rolling Stones first lived) was only a mile down the Earls Court Road!
If you ever visit Tower House (on Melbury Road) you won’t see much of what’s inside (I never have). Actually there is very little to see from the outside other than what you see in these images (and well done for getting the interior shots, which are fascinating from an architectural viewpoint). But when it opens again (renovations) you can go around the corner instead and visit Leighton House, which is now a museum and was the former home of artist and patron Lord Leighton. It’s stunning, has much in common with Tower House and I understand Mr Page is rather fond of visiting it himself.

PLUS... The oft-repeated false trope that has been passed around that LZ "toured with Spirit" is complete BS.
They opened for spirit ONCE in Dec. 26th, 1968 in Denver. It was LZ's first ever show in the USA. That was all!
The next time the 2 bands even came close to bumping into each other was at the Seattle Pop Festival in late July, 1969.
It was a 3-day festival and the two bands were no where near each other on the roster, as Spirit played early in the afternoon on Sunday ( the last day), and Led Zep closed the festival on the last evening, well past midnight and into the wee hours of Monday morning.
There were also a big bunch of bands for the Atlanta Pop Festival earlier that same month. The 2 bands both played there, but at completely different times on July 5th, 1969.
The proof of this can easily be found in both Spirit's and LZ's tour itineraries which can be found online and in at least a few published books.
Too many lazy, dumb music journalists haven't bothered to even look this fact up - including the silly tour guide in the video.

The court case proved that Spirit never ever played Taurus when Zeppelin shared a bill with them 3 times. In fact Taurus wasn't a song that Spirit were playing live at any point in 1968/69. It was just an obscure mediocre slow paced song that wouldn't have been featured in a short set with limited time.
Jimmy also proved he played an opening identical to Stairway in 1968, before Zeppelin ever went to America and shared a bill with Spirit, when he was guest guitarist on a song called Ice Cream Dreams by Cartoone.
    Case closed.

    • @IAmTheHound
      @IAmTheHound ปีที่แล้ว +2

not to mention that descending harmony is not unheard of elsewhere in music. There are only so many harmonic/chord sequences that can be used, particularly in popular music. People who go on about ripping off generally seem to be non-musicians and
      ignorant of this.

Its not irrelevant. The CLAIM was that Zeppelin heard Spirit play it live when they shared a bill with them a few times. Spirit never played it live then.

Why would they have? And if they heard it in 1968 why didn't Jimmy use it on the first Zeppelin album when time was short and they needed other songs to borrow?
If Taurus was so important to Jimmy, why wait THREE YEARS to steal it and at a time when practically everything they were doing by then was original so there was no need? That's like going backwards.
Stairway doesn't even really sound much like Taurus anyway.

Pffft....Page was every bit as good, and probably better than Hendrix ( I don't bother counting Page's time when he was blitzed on herion - nobody could play well in that drugged up state, including Jimi H).
Hendrix was a more of a 2-dimensional musician. Page was multi-dimensional before even forming LZ.

Page was on a completely different level to Hendrix, Hendrix was talented but no where near as talented as Jimmy Page, obviously you have no clue about music.
