🚆 Cab ride from Zurich to St. Gallen non-stop!

  • Let's go pick up our locomotive, drive to the coaches and then set off to a non-stop trip to St. Gallen. This train is empty rolling stock, meaning there are no passengers or other staff in the train. It was transferred to St. Gallen to be used from there by passengers later on.
    This is not the standard route to St. Gallen, which would lead us via Zurich Airport. Since there were no stops to serve, we took the quickest route possible, from Zurich depot via Zurich Stadelhofen to Winterthur and then further to St. Gallen. The two stops we had were due to red signals and other trains ahead, not for boarding and unboarding.
    Locomotive: Re 420
    More information about the train is displayed in the video!

    Just watched this for the first time. I took this route as a passenger on my way to München from Zürich Hauptbahnhof over 40 years ago (stopping at Sankt Gallen and then on to Sankt Margareten, Bregenz, Lindau, and finally München). I never forgot how beautiful the scenery was! Thanks for letting me relive the memory!

    I may have commented before, but even if I have, several points of interest near the beginning here. This loco still seems to have the old tick-tock tick-tock Hasler speed recorder then. Cute little vintage shunter just coming into view round the corner at 3:41. And that shed building there is very avant-garde. It looks like a bouncy inflatable.

    Greetings from France. Once again, another suberb video. I was once a driver in the UK, I'm retired now; However, railway operations remain in your blood. Your signalling system intrigues me, I've noted there has been some changes in recent years, however, a explanation of signalling functions (i.e. route indications and advance warnings, etc) would be much appreciated.

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There is a useful Wikipedia article about our signalling. It's deeper stuff than what is listed there, but it gives you a pretty good idea how things work: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swiss_railway_signalling

    A magnificent cabride to St Gallens. There is still quite a lot of snow in several places along the route. Even in March the snow has not yet melted. It is also quite remarkable that the train only stopped at two places despite being a passenger train. Normally the trains which you drive are freight ones. Liked the way the locomotive went to pick up the coaches in the beginning of the video. When are you uploading the next video? And where will we be travelling to?

    Ist das eine Fahrt, die regelmässig (täglich,wöchentlich) gemacht wird oder war das eine Ausnahme? Ich frage, weil der Zürich HB und besonders Stadelhofen immer extrem ausgelastet wirken und ich mir kaum vorstellen kann, dass es im Fahrplan noch Lücken für eine solche Extrafahrt gibt.
    Wie immer ist das Video absolute spitze und sehr unterhaltsam, viele Grüsse!

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nein, das war eine Extrafahrt. Solche Fahrten finden immer auf freien Trassen zwischen vorhandenen Zügen statt. Darum waren wir ab Zürich ziemlich langsam (Züge vor uns) und ab Winti schnell, da wir hinter uns Verkehr hatten. Solche "Güterzugtrassen" haben also tatsächlich auch im Stadelhofen Platz.

  • @AndreiTupolev
    @AndreiTupolev 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Some nice noises in the cab of those old locos. Is that ticking noise the speed recorder? Several Twindexx sets in the sidings there I see, which is probably the best place for them.
    Do loco hauled empty stock workings customarily run through Zürich HB low level?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It is the tachometer (Hasler RT12), which also records speeds and other information - on paper! Which route is being used depends on where the train is heading to. From where we stood, it was the only possibility to reach St. Gallen without driving backwards or changing the loco.

    You never fail to deliver a delightful run!
    The dreamlike slow move through the tunnels at the start got me thinking - is the join into the old tunnel route to Letten at all visible to you as a driver or is it all filled in and smoothed over?
    More generally, thinking about your excellent annotations, do you usually state the all-up tonnage including the loco or just the trailing load?
    Thanks for taking us with you again \m/

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Letten tunnel is not visible from the rails, however the Letten viaduct is very prominent and clearly visible when travelling to Wipkingen or from there. The old station Letten and the tunnel are visible when visiting by foot, but it has been filled with cement and is no longer accesible. The weight I state always includes the locomotive, contrary to the real train world, where the weight is always calculated without locomotive.

    • @officialmcdeath
      @officialmcdeath 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@RailwayEmotions shame there's no visible relict of the tunnel on the inside but I guess it keeps it simple for everyone that way - yes I remember the old Letten route well with those beautiful red trains - also remember numerous stories about what went on at the old station after the closure - apparently it's been cleaned up now.
      Good to hear your take on all-up weight, it's the only relevant measure of the situation.
      Thanks for your thoughts \m/

    Hey Railway Emotions
    Really like your videos. One question. Would it be able to add some kind of live tracking of the route? I know that its possible with the newer gopros. Would really be handy in order to know where you are right now in the video

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      While I understand that some viewers, like you, may like a live view on a map, I do think that the majority just enjoys the look out of the window without obstructions in the image. Some of my viewers use open railway map together with the info on the screen to track the trains route. I hope that helps!

    • @Cmoredebris
      @Cmoredebris 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My solution is to use two, high quality monitors. On one, I watch the Railway Emotion video. On the second monitor I use the mapping platform of the Swiss Confederation: map.geo.admin.ch/
      You can focus in on every detail and see exactly where the locomotive driver an his train are, by simply comparing video to map. As the train moves, you manually move the map. It's not "live", but the next best thing. The background can be changed from map to aerial imagery for extraordinary detail. This map is so much better than anything Google provides.

    • @rogersexton7857
      @rogersexton7857 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      People like 'Chicken Wing' who want to follow your progress should do what 'Patrick' and I do - use Eisenbahn Atlas Schweiz. Alternatively they should adopt George Dwyer's suggestion, though that suggestion requires a good computer and the skill to use it in the manner he suggests.

    • @Cmoredebris
      @Cmoredebris 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A paper map is a great solution also. I use HP 23er monitors and a mid range desk top computer. I have a very slow download speed over my phone line, so sometimes the map.geo moves and loads slowly. Fortunately I am able to watch the video in HD. As far as needing skill to use the map.geo web site, it just takes some practice.

    Nice, a ride to St Gallen :D
    I like these non-revenue moves as they often take different routes and we get to see places passengers don't usually go. I looked up the train graphs for this line and had my mind blown by the sheer volume of traffic… I'm still trying to figure out whether this movement is on the graph, and if so, which one.
    The Re 420 is quite a noisy locomotive. What's the ticking sound?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's special for us, too. It's not common to blast through cities with a passenger train and stopping only twice and only for a few minutes due to a red signal. There's a lot of traffic on those routes that we have covered, but there's always a bit of space to squeeze in unplanned trips like this. Often also used by freight trains.
      This machine is easily about 50 years old, no wonder they're so loud. But they are reliable and still in everyday service. The ticking is the tachometer (Hasler RT12)

      Were you able to drive this train because you are a senior driver or because no one else wanted to do it?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's quite easy, there's a pool with jobs that have to be done and a pool with drivers that are still available. Connect both and you're done ;-) As long as we have route knowledge and the type rating for the locomotive, we just get these things assigned

    • @zoqaeski
      @zoqaeski 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@RailwayEmotions What's involved in getting route knowledge of a particular line? Do you have to drive with a supervisor or just memorise track and signal charts? I've seen photos from Swiss and German cabs with a route knowledge book on the desk in front of the driver listing all the important things, which we don't do in Australia: drivers are expected to know the road off by heart.
      Are there any routes you're not qualified on but would like to drive one day?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Ride the cab four times per direction, one of which in darkness, the train is being driven by a colleague. You watch and memorise the looks, signals, station placements, names... on top, you will have to learn the special local regulations and limits of each route and station. In some cases, like the bigger base tunnels, big stations like Zurich, Basel, Bern, Luzern etc., route knowledge alone is not enough. The station has to be visited and inspected thoroughly by foot. After that, you're allowed to drive on your own. But the learning curve still continues, it takes a bit to get the "feel" of the route. We're also expected to know our routes very well, but the timetable and speed limits still have to be visible at all times. There's a german Wiki article about it with a screenshot from the app: de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lokpersonal_Electronic_Assistant
      There are always routes that some of us would love to drive and others are already bored to death with them, since they do it so much. I can't complain, but to give you an answer, I'd love to drive in the french part. The view from Puidoux-Chexbres overlooking Lake Geneva with its vineyards is absolutely spectacular.

    Who knows what brake ratio 125% means?

    • @RailwayEmotions
      @RailwayEmotions  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      A figure that tells how fast a train can come to a stop. Modern passenger trains have between 135 - 180%, freight trains can have as low as 50%. Braking ratio therefore defines the vmax for the whole train and for all segments of the route. It's not uncommon that a stretch of track can be driven with 125kmh by a passenger train and the same track only with 30kmh by a freight train with low braking percentage.

    What is that ticking noise? Most distracting. Otherwise, an excellent video.

      The tachometer (Hasler RT12), not distracting at all - we‘re used to it.

      Only the old machines do that. There are a few videos on the channel with the same ticking.
