    Hi Matt happy sunday. I hope you are all well. Summer moved on is one of my all time favourite A-HA songs album wise and especially live wise. I find the longest note is breathtaking no one else except Morten could pull it off to such a high degree every time. Take care 😘🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 ❤️🇳🇴❤️A-HA FOREVER❤️🇳🇴❤️

      I did that note in a car journey once (I wasn't driving or I'd pass out)... but i didn't have to sing the 2 minutes before that or the minute after it so.... Yeah, only Morten. LOL

    That long note is impressive enough in the studio. How he does it live, then takes 1 breath and hits the high note just blows me away. Definitely my favourite vocalist along with Tom Chaplin and Thom Yorke.

    At last, the live version of Summer Moved On in 2002, when I first witnessed it and realised that Morten actually sang that crazy long note and it was not a studio effect, as I had thought. 😜 I was mindblown! I still remember my incredulity as the note went on, and on, and on... 😲
    I think you're right, though the song had been said to be about the band, there are certainly parts of the lyrics that probably relate to Paul and Lauren, or at least to a relationship between a couple ("honey moved out", "stay, don't just walk away"...). The lyrics can be read in many different ways, and I suppose that was Paul’s intention.
    Only two songs to finish that CD! 👌

      Very true, I obviously got my wires crossed a little bit, but you're absolutely right, Paul's feelings for Lauren color many of his lyrics, including those about subjects outside of that relationship. And indeed, I'm guessing he wasn't calling Morten or Mags "honey"! 😆😘

    I don’t think thanks can be laid at Lauren’s door this time Matt…this song isn’t about Pal’s relationship with her, it’s about the band and their somewhat fraught relationships. It was written at a time when the band had not performed or even been in the same room together for four years and it was looking pretty uncertain when, if ever, they’d reform again. They were asked to perform at the 1998 Nobel Peace Prize Concert and after they accepted, Pal decided to write a new song to perform at it. It was his thinking that this may be the last a-ha song ever and was written as a one-of, an end of an era song for the band is really what it is if you listen to the lyrics. However, it went down well and created the impetus within the three band members to make a new album…which became Minor Earth, Major Sky, released two years later in 2000 and which included this song ..released as a single too, it became a big hit especially in Europe.
    This is probably the best live version of the song, although my own preference is for the first live version they performed in 1998 at Nobel concert…even though Morten messed up the lines of the lyrics 😁nothing new there then! …and also he didn’t hold the long note for quite as long as became customary after the 2000 release. However, his voice just sounds so relaxed and the tone so beautiful after not hearing him sing with a-ha for so many years that it will forever be my favourite version of the song.

      @mattsnider2667  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Ha, yes, I was thinking about this earlier today. Given how much I've been listening to their early demos and songs from Scoundrel Days, my thoughts before doing this were placing some of the lines in that same vein (and fair to say, I do think his emotions about his relationship may have played a role in his phrasing here---surprised if he was calling Morten or Mags "honey," haha). But yes, obviously in 2000, the lines can be rightly seen as relating to the band.

      @@mattsnider2667 You know, I always thought that (once I found out that the songs was about themselves) the 'honey moved out' reference was about the sweetness leaving the situation (their situation) and just rephrased to make the song accessible as a song with room for listener interpretation. Just my thoughts on that line... it stood out to me too.

    • @UnhandyCandy280
      @UnhandyCandy280 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      For the long note, I somehow thought that he'd sing the note and then step away from the mic and let the note fade or hang in the air. I didn't imagine he'd do it live and i didn't imagine he'd do it every time after to this day !!! Amazing... frankly, it's showing off !!! LOL

    • @marjoriemcbride6557
      @marjoriemcbride6557 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@UnhandyCandy280 Yes…I think that too about the honey line…the lyrics have to be written with enough ambiguity for the listener to be able to fit their own narrative into them. In that respect I think Pal succeeded in a really clever way.

      @@UnhandyCandy280 I think it has become increasingly difficult for Morten to sustain that long note over time…that he was still able to do it live so effortlessly for so many years is quite remarkable. Eight measures is a long time for a singer to hold and sustain a single note without wavering or oscillating the tone. I’ve sung along with Morten at home or in the car when I’m playing this song and I sometimes manage it, but more than often don’t….and I sound horrible compared to Morten anyway. But although I’m a singer and have good breath control, I couldn’t do it horrible sounding or not, consistently.

    This is my fave live version of SMO. Mainly because I think the piano bridge works better than just the guitar or the guitar and piano call/response version. It's light and airy but also meaningful. Don't get me wrong, the album version's guitar bridge is perfect however, live I think the piano works better. IMHO.

    Well hmmmm.....I never thought of it either as a song for Lauren or the band. I just thought it was like a made up story of a person losing someone in a relationship and struggling between facing logic and feelings. I don't know, but this song always gets me. It's just what I see as Magne, Morten, and Pål's love song to the fans. How it's like they are making love to us, musically. I swear. I have used this analogy in the past and gone through it with more descriptions in those reactions, so I will save everyone from them now. Well, I am always hot and bothered after it and fanning myself. We'll leave it at that. ❤‍🔥❤‍🔥❤‍🔥🙈😂 All the goodies it gives us. I am a little sorry and I apologize in advance here, but this version is not a favorite of mine. The music is amazing. Magne on the piano/keyboards and Pål on the guitar are like loving gentle caresses. I mean no disrespect to Morten here, but was he under the weather? There is no raspiness and he sounds like he is singing more in that what I call "Polite" voice. Was this one of the last stops on a long tour? I know this is an incredibly tough song to do. It just feels off to me. He sounds like his voice is tired or he is struggling a bit. It makes me wince not as a criticism, just as more sympathy. It's a hard one for me to hear him with. Could this be around the time he had to have one of those surgeries for his vocal chords? I just want to give him what my dad used to call "Witch's Brew" . It was hot tea with honey, lemon, and some whiskey. Dad used to give it to us when we were sick or had a sore throat. That or give him that tea I have now that's called "Throat Coat" to help sore throats. I just want to put my arm on his shoulder and say "It's okay Morten. You don't have to do this. I can listen to it on many recordings. I feel too guilty to make you do this right now." Don't get me wrong, even if it's a little off, it's still impressive to me that he's belting out that long note. He still has the lungs even if he's under the weather or tired. (?) Sigh....sorry guys. I can't do this one. 😞

    • @UnhandyCandy280

      If i remember this was the lifelines tour and Morten did have throat problems during some of this tour. I saw them at Royal Albert Hall and in Mags intro speech he said that Morten was having voice problems so wouldn't speak so much and not to take it personally. So you could be onto something with the cleaner sound to his voice. Honestly, he could have just held the mic out to the audience and we'd have sung it to him !!!!
