The lead singer, if I am not mistaken, is the original artist Noel Wilderberg who was killed in a motor vehicle accident around 1960. It took the original members more than a few months to get over this loss and find a new lead singer. A great grfrom my teen years,,
Check out their two other top hits, Come A Little Bit Closer, and Hangin' Five, as well as many other recordings. There is a restored pristine live recording of them backing Johnny O'Keefe and his band The Dee Jays from 1959 singing "Shout" it's well worth a listen.
As a teenager I remember hearing on the radio the next morning that Noel had died and how shocked and sad I felt. In later life saw them quite a few times at various clubs and really liked that Peewee always made mention of Noel.
When Noel died in 1962 I was at High School. This song epitomizes that era. I was that grief-stricken that I wrote a letter to the Delltones to apply as a singer. I didn't make it but I'll never forget that time. Thank you for a beautiful song. Rest in peace Noel Widerberg.
I knew Noel Widerberg before he became famous. I used to work in the Claims Dept. Of A.M.P. Society as did Noel. All day he would sit at his desk singing mostly Franf Sinatra songs. 2:572:57
Very talented group of lads. Never sang a bad song and happy to sing a song of another artist, particularly the USA. Let’s face it the late 50 and early sixty’s did show much of the Overseas Artists. Radio yes, but not TV. Johnny O’Keefe wasn’t shy about singing songs of the Artist’s either, although he was a flop in the short time he visited the USA. They would have loved John Farnham and would have made him a super star, however, John was a Home boy who did ok thanks to Glen.
Fantastic song & clip !! The boys were a world-class vocal group .. Noel's lead vocal is superb in this song. Tragic that he left us when so young. The Delli's are currently touring down the coast .. NSW .. & I've got my tickets booked for their upcomig show in Forster, July 2012 .. won't need a table .. I'll be standin & rockin all night long ...... can't wait to see & hear Pee-Wee ...

What an iconic Aussie group from the sixties. I just loved their songs, listening to them now takes me back to that magic time in history.

Me also!
we saw the group at Kempsey RSL back around the mid 80's. The world would be a better place if we still had this type of music around today.
Craig Martin Yeah, me too. I think Nevin McLean was lead singer then. They were great!

The song was released in 1989. How can it be that a song with a classic 60's vibe is still being played at such a time? 🤩
This must be a “re-release” as Noel the lead singer died, MV accident around 1960/62.

Great song with good clip.
Four masculine dreamboats who can actually sing. Puts today's groups to shame for sure. No comparison.

The lead singer was killed in a crash after this song? I don't know much about this group.

They continued on with a new lead singer but were never the same but had success on the club circus, also backed Johnny O'Keefe once.

Let me share the lyrics from google
When I was a little boy my daddy used to say to me, so-on
You've got a lot of big plans and a lot of hard work to be done
He said, go get your marbles, put 'em in the house
Tear down your castles in the sand
Come with your poppy to this cotton patch
Get a little dirt on your hands
Get a little dirt on your hands, boy, get a little dirt on your hands
If you want to grow up to be a big big man
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
Well I got to be twenty and I thought I was a pretty big whee-eel
Left the country for the city, met a slicker with a shady dea-eal
He said hold up the tavern, grab all the money
Run as fast as you can
If you want to get along in this big bad world
You've gotta get a little dirt on your hands
Get a little dirt on your hands, boy, get a little dirt on your hands
If you want to grow up to be a big big man
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
Well it's four in the mornin' and the warden is callin' my na-ame
Said he's teachin' me a lesson, gonna send me out to work in the rain
He said dig that ditch boy, chop that wood, I've gotta make you understand
The only way to straighten out a boy like you
Is to get a little dirt on your hands
Get a little dirt on your hands, boy, get a little dirt on your hands
If you want to grow up to be a big big man
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
You gotta get a little dirt on your hands
Get a little dirt on your hands
