- For hundreds of years, the Gowanus Canal has been accumulating industrial waste and New York City's untreated sewage overflow. Today, it is filled with toxic chemicals and heavy metals. But it's finally getting cleaned up! The Environmental Protection Agency announced they are going through with a $1 billion plan to restore the haunted waterway into the pristine canal it once was.

Someone needs to learn the difference between a canal and a river
It was a natural River and even hosted a Revolutionary War battle at a bridge over it. In time, like the Los Angeles River, it came to look more like a drainage ditch or canal due to the value of land and flood control.

That "awful smell" he talks about was so much worse in the 1960's through the 1990's, until they started - and paused - a cleanup project. I lived just one block from there, and although it had a deep green, slimy look to it, we never knew of any real danger. Many of my family members were in their 40's and 50's when they were diagnosed with Leukemia, Lung Cancer and other cancers. No real proof it was this toxic body of water, but losing 5 family members - who were all in pretty good health otherwise - would make it extremely likely.

@@hachikos those masks do little to mitigate the noxious fumes. They should have filters that contain activated carbon and HEPA paper.
